Oggi vorrei portarvi in un posto che è un paradiso qui sulla terra. Si tratta di un vigneto musicale che è appropriatamente chiamato il Paradiso di Frassina. Sì! Avete letto bene! Si tratta di un luogo in cui la musica è suonata alle viti per farle crescere meglio. Ventiquattro ore al giorno sette giorni su sette! Sono stata personalmente in questo luogo incantevole e ho fatto una passeggiata tra le vigne e sono entrata nella cantina. Vi posso assicurare che è davvero un piccolo pezzo di paradiso.
Today I am going to take you to a place that is heaven on earth. It is a musical vineyard and it is appropriate it is called il Paradiso di Frassina. Yes! You read that correctly! It is a place where the music is played to the vines to make them grow better. Twenty-four hours of the day seven days of the week! I’ve been to this enchanting place and walked through the grounds and visited the cantina. I can assure you that it really is a little piece of heaven.
Sono arrivata al Paradiso di Frassina con gli amici poco dopo una tempesta. Come ho messo un piede fuori dalla macchina, il sole è apparso sulle colline della Val d’Orcia e ho sentito la musica di Mozart. Intorno i campi c’è un notevole numero di altoparlanti posizionate in modo che le vite possono “ascoltare” la musica del maestro del XVIII secolo.
I arrived at Paradiso di Frassina with friends just after a rainstorm. As I stepped out of the car, the sun broke out over the hills of Val d’Orcia and the music of Mozart enveloped us. All throughout the fields, a remarkable number of loud-speakers have been positioned so that the vines can “listen” to the eighteenth-century maestro’s music.
Perché la musica suona per un grappolo d’uva, mi chiedete? Beh, questo non è stato solo un concetto romantico, ma parte di una ricerca scientifica a lungo termine per vedere come le onde sonore possono positivamente influire sulla vigna e la sua produzione di vino. Il progetto è sostenuto da entrambe le università di Firenze e Pisa.
Why is music played to a bunch of grapes, you ask? Well, this is not just a silly romantic notion, but part of long-term scientific research to see how sound waves can beneficially affect the vineyard and its wine production. The project is supported by both the Universities of Florence and Pisa.
L’azienda è stata fondata da Giancarlo Cignozzi, un avvocato di Milano nel 200. Durante la mia visita improvvisata all’azienda, è capitato che Giancarlo era presso la cantine ed io e i miei amici sono stati in grado di incontrarlo. Quello che ho imparato è che lui è molto appassionato a quest’idea di trattare i suoi vigneti con la musicoterapia.
The estate was founded by Giancarlo Cignozzi, a lawyer from Milan in 2000. During my impromptu visit to the vineyard, Giancarlo happened to be at the winery and I and my friends were able to meet him. What I learned is that he is quite passionate about his wine and treating his vines to music therapy.
Ci ha spiegato a fondo come nel 2006 la società americana, Bose, incuriosita dal progetto scientifico, ha deciso di aiutare fornendo, gratuitamente uno sistema speciale di altoparlanti per tutte le stagioni. Ha descritto come a partire dal 2008 l’università ricercatori di questo straordinario progetto ha poi suggerito che solo la musica di Mozart può essere suonata nei campi per creare un’esperienza armonica uguale per tutte le viti.
He thoroughly explained to us that in 2006 the American company, Bose, curious about Giancarlo’s vineyard and the scientific research being done supplied free of charge a special all-weather speaker system. He described how from 2008 onwards the University researchers of this special project had suggested that only the music of Mozart blanket the vines to create a uniform harmonic experience for all the vines.
Nel 2013 sono stati pubblicati i risultati dell’esperimento musicale di Giancarlo. È stato determinato che la dimensione e lo spessore delle foglie erano aumentati così come il livello di clorofilla. L’uso di rame e zolfo trattamenti a spruzzo è stato ridotto del 50% in quanto non più era necessario per proteggere la salute della vite. Le foglie erano in grado di respirare in modo più efficiente la musica le ha rese più resistenti allo stress causato da secchezza, pioggia e vento. Le uve avevano livelli più elevati di antociani e polifenoli (colore e tannini). Inoltre, il ciclo di crescita naturale delle piante era più efficiente.
In 2013 the results of Giancarlo’s musical experiment were published. It was determined that the size and thickness of the leaves had increased as well as the level of chlorophyll. The use of copper and sulfur spray treatments was reduced by 50% as it wasn’t needed to protect the health of the vine. The leaves were able to breathe more efficiently making them more resistant to stress brought about by dryness, rain, and wind. The grapes had higher levels of anthocyanins and polyphenols (color and tannins). Furthermore, the vines’ natural growth cycle was more efficient.
Giancarlo continua a gestire Paradiso di Frassina con un profondo rispetto per la natura tipica dei contadini tradizionali. Il suo vigneto è un luogo dove il rispetto per la natura e l’emozione e la magia della musica riuniscono.
Giancarlo continues to run Paradiso di Frassina with the kind of profound respect for nature typical of the traditional farmers whose “peasant wisdom” allowed them to work in perfect harmony with the land. Paradiso indeed is a place where a virtuous and holistic farming circle exists. It is a place where respect for nature and the magic and emotion of music connect.
La prossima volta che girate per la colline delle Toscana e capita che passate da Montalcino e sentite le melodie di Mozart che si diffonde attraverso l’aria, fate una deviazione e fate una sosta al Paradiso di Frassina per godere il panorama e la musica. Forse sarete fortunati come me e potrete ascoltare la storia del Paradio di Frassina direttamente da Giancarlo se stesso! È piuttosto un carattere e non è timido di condividere il suo amore per la terra, la musica e il suo vino!
Next time you are driving about Tuscany and happen to pass by Montalcino and hear the sweet melodies of Mozart wafting through the air, be sure to make a detour and stop in at Paradiso di Frassina to enjoy the view and the music. Perhaps you will be lucky as I was and be able to hear the story of il Paradiso di Frassina from Giancarlo himself! He is quite a character and is not shy about sharing his love for the land, the music, and his wine!
Interessante. So next it would be interesting to see if changing composers or style of music would have an effect. And then there’s the question of intelligence… does the “Mozart Effect” carry over to plants as well?
