La magia di Carnevale è arrivata! Quest’anno (2017) le feste durano da sabato 11 febbraio fino a sabato venticinque febbraio. È il periodo che tradizionalmente precede la quaresima e conclude con il mercoledì delle ceneri, primo giorno di quaresima.
The magic of Carnival has arrived. This year (2017) the holiday lasts from Saturday, February 11 until Saturday, February 25. It is the period that precedes Lent and concludes with Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
In questo periodo tutta l’Italia si anima con costumi, maschere, sfilate di carri allegorici, evocazioni storiche e tanti eventi piacevoli. In particolare gli spettacoli che si svolgono a Venezia sono molto speciali! È il momento dell’anno quando la Serenissima supera la sua bellezza naturale e la città diventa veramente un paradiso in terra!
At this time all of Italy comes alive with costumes, masks, parades and allegorical floats, historical reenactions, and all manner of delightful events. In particular, the events that take place in Venice are really special It is the moment of the year when la Serenissima surpasses her natural beauty and indeed becomes a garden of earthly delights!
Per esempio, se foste stati a Venezia lo scorso fine settimana, potreste aver assistito alla processione delle dodici Marie e lo spettacolo del Volo dell’angelo, in cui una delle Maria volteggia appesa a un filo, dal campanile di San Marco al centro della piazza. Avreste anche visto le luci magiche dello spettacolo – La Vanitas degli Abissi – e i canali di Venezia illuminati dai ballerini e delle fate e delle creature marine.
For instance, if you had been in Venice last weekend, you would also have witnessed the procession of the 12 Marias and the spectacular flight of the Angel as one of the Maria’s floats down into San Marco Square from the top of the bell tower. You would have also seen the magical evening light show – La Vanitas degli Abissi – and the canals of Venice illuminated by fairy dancers and sea creatures.
Per tutto il periodo di Carnevale, vagando per i calli e le strade strette di Venezia, potreste vedere una grande varietà di costumi creativi e maschere colorate. Ci si chiede chi è la persona dietro a ogni maschera. La maschera nasconde la vera identità della persona o permette alla vera natura di emergere?
All through Carnival season, as you wander through the narrow streets of Venice you will see a wide variety of creative costumes and colorful masks. One wonders who is disguised behind each mask. Does the mask cover up one’s identity or allow one’s true nature to emerge?

Forse gli eventi più spettacolari in questo periodo, quelli che ci ispirano e ci fanno fantasticare e sognare sono i balli in costumi di Venezia. Ci sono molti balli in tutta la città, ma il più elaborato è il Ballo del Doge. Quest’anno il Ballo del Doge avverrà sabato 25 febbraio presso il palazzo veneziano del 15º secolo che si affaccia sul Canale Grande — Palazzo Pisani Moretta. Il nome del ballo deriva dal titolo del capo dello stato Doge, “Duke” in inglese. Ogni anno al ballo partecipano da quattrocento ospiti vestiti in costume d’epoca. Le maschere, naturalmente, sono obbligatorie.
Perhaps the most elegant of affairs at this time of the year, that inspire and cause one to fantasize and dream are the Venetian costume balls. There are many throughout the city, but the most elaborate is Il Ballo del Doge. This year the Ballo del Doge will occur on Saturday, February 25th, at the 15th-century Venetian palace that flanks the Grand Canal — the Palazzo Pisani Moretta. The ball’s name is derived from the title of the elected head of state — Doge or “Duke” in English. Every year the ball is attended by four hundred guests dressed in period costume. Masks, of course, are obligatory.
Il Ballo del Doge è stato descritto da Vanity Fair come “una delle feste più esclusive del mondo”. Gli ospiti sono membri di famiglie reali europee, del medio oriente e asiatiche. Ci sono anche celebrità e alti dirigenti del settore finanziario provenienti da tutto il mondo. Si tratta di un evento esclusivo, i biglietti sono costosi.
Il Ballo del Doge has been described by Vanity Fair as “one of the most exclusive parties in the world. Guests have included members of European, Middle Eastern, and Asian royal families, celebrities, and leaders in international business and finance. It is an exclusive affair and tickets are quite expensive.
L’idea del ballo deriva da Antonia Sautter. Ogni anno crea un’esperienza unica che permetta agli ospiti di esplorare i loro cinque sensi – vista, udito, gusto, tatto e olfatto. Non appena gli ospiti varcano la soglia del palazzo, entrano in un mondo di sogni incredibili, che sicuramente li delizierà e li stupirà. Antonia, non solo costruisce scene insolite e belle come sfondo del Ballo, ma crea anche abilmente costumi sontuosi e maschere fantastiche, che coprano i volti più famosi. Per intrattenere i suoi ospiti organizza esibizioni di acrobati audaci, artisti teatrali e abili musicisti.
The Ballo itself is the brainchild of Antonia Sautter. Each year she creates an elaborate experience that allows guests to explore their five senses – sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. As soon as each guest crosses the threshold of the palace, he enters an incredible dream world that is sure to delight and amaze. Antonia not only designs unusual and lovely venues but also skillfully creates sumptuous costumes and beautiful masks, designed to conceal the most famous of faces. To entertain her guests, she provides performances by daring acrobats, theatrical artists, and accomplished musicians.
Oh quanto vorrei essere a Venezia in questo momento e assistere allo splendore di tutti questi eventi! Che divertimento sarebbe ballare tra le braccia di un misterioso sconosciuto. Dopotutto, come si dice in Italiano: a Carnevale, ogni scherzo vale!
Oh to be in Venice now and take part in the splendor of all these events! I myself would love to dress in period costume and don an elegant mask. What fun in would be to dance in the arms of a mysterious stranger. After all as the saying goes: At carnival time, every trick is acceptable.
