Buon inizio anno a tutti! Come sapete ci sono segni definitivi che l’anno è nuovo di zecca. Per me un segno e un nuovo calendario Italiano di Living Language recentemente aperto che appare sulla scrivania accanto al computer e le prime voci per gennaio 1 e 2 sono “Anno nuovo, vita nuova” e “L’anno vecchio è appena finito”. Adoro queste parole casuali e ogni mattina non vedo l’ora di leggere la prossima frase utile. (Ho dato un’occhiata alla frase per domani e lo è: “Chi è quel ragazzo alto laggiù?” Utili frasi, no…perché non si sa mai quando avrà bisogno di parlare dei ragazzi alti in una conversazione tra amici!

Good start of the year to all! As you know there are definite signs that the year is brand new. For me, one sign is a newly opened Living Language Italian calendar that appears on my desk next to my computer and the first entries for January 1 & 2 are “New year, new life” and “The old year is just finished”. I love these random sayings and each morning I can’t wait to read the next useful phrase. (I just peeked ahead and the phrase for tomorrow is: “Who is that tall boy over there”. Helpful sayings, because you just never know when you will need to discuss tall boys in your next conversation with Italian friends!)

Un altro buon segno che l’anno è nuovo: gli avanzi di lenticchie. In Italia è una tradizione mangiare le lenticchie a Capodanno. Si dice che le lenticchie portano buona fortuna perché hanno la forma di piccole monete d’oro. Non sono superstiziosa, ma d’altra parte non voglio rischiare giocare con buona sorte. Se le lenticchie sono una portafortuna, sono pronta di mangiarle. Di dire la verità, dopo tutto quello che ho speso e mangiato durante le feste, sono pronta non solo per recuperare un po’ di soldi, ma anche pronta ad iniziare una dieta…e direi che un pasto vegetariano è un passo nella direzione giusta!’

Another sure sign that the year is new: leftover lentils. In Italy it is the tradition to each lentils on News Years Eve. They say that lentils bring good luck because they are shaped like little gold coins. I am not superstitious, but on the other hand I am not going to play around with lady luck. If lentils are good luck charms, them I am ready to eat them. To tell the truth, after all that I have spent and eaten during the holidays I am ready not only to recuperate a little money, but am also ready to begin a diet…and I would say eating a healthy vegetarian dish is a step in the right direction!

Per me l’anno non potrebbe cominciare senza la festa a Times Square a New York. In realtà non sono mai stata in Times Square a Capodanno e veramente non ho voglia di inserirmi nel mezzo della folla pazzesca. Invece lo trovo molto più comodo guardando la scena in televisione dal mio poltrone, mentre i New Yorkesi fanno il conto al rovescio e la palla discenda che significa che il nuovo anno è qui. Quest’anno è stata Lady Gaga di premere il pulsante che ha discesa della palla luminosa e poi è stata lei di baciare il sindaco Michael Bloomberg. Sono sicura che è stata una serata indimenticabile, se non per lei, almeno per lui! Secondo me sembrava che Lady G, con la sua maschera e vestito d’argenteo, fosse più adatta per Carnevale invece di Capodanno. Ma immagino che siamo tutti fortunati che lei si è vestito affatto! Meno male non ha deciso di apparire come una bambina nuda per raffigurare l’anno nuovo!

For me the year couldn’t begin with out the party in Times Square in New York. Actually, I have never been to Times Square on New Years and really have no desire to be in the middle of the crazy crowd. Instead, I find it much more comfortable to watch the entire scene play out on TV from my couch, while the New Yorkers count down and the ball drops officially signifying the New Year is here. This year Lady Gaga pressed the button to make the golden ball drop and it was she who kissed mayor Michael Bloomberg. I’m sure it was an unforgettable evening, if not for her, at least for him! In my opinion it seemed that Lady G, with her mask and silver get up were more suitable for Carnevale instead of New Years Eve. But, I guess we are fortunate that she wore anything at all! Thank heavens she didn’t decide to dress as a naked baby to represent the New Year.

Ci sono tanti segni che l’anno inizia bene, ma non più impressionante o veramente agghiacciante, in ogni senso della parola, come il modo in cui alcune persone festeggiano Capodanno facendo un tuffo nell’acqua gelida! Da Livorno a Lago di Garda, da Napoli a Bari, ci sono alcune persone che prendono la spiaggia per fare un tuffo nel mare per fare un buon auspicio. Anche a Roma si tiene il consueto tuffo dai ponti nel Tevere! “A sfidare le condizioni atmosferiche avverse e l’acqua gelida, non curanti delle conseguenze alle quali si potrebbe incorrere considerando anche il cenone consumato la sera prima, sono sempre migliaia di intrepidi che rispettano l’appuntamento fisso ogni 1° Gennaio!” Se qualcuno può sopravvivere quello, boh, sicuramente è pronto per affrontare qualsiasi cosa che il nuovo anno lancia contro di lui…ma l’unici segni quell’idea mi dà sono pelle d’oca!

There are so many signs that the New Year is off to a good start, but none more impressive or chilling, in every sense of the word, as the way in which some people celebrate New Year’s by diving into frigid waters. From Livorno to Lago di Garda to Napoli and Bari there are those who take to the beaches and dive into the ocean for good luck. Even in Rome there are those who habitually dive from bridges along the Tevere! “To challenge the adverse weather conditions and cold water, careless of the consequences which may lead, especially considering the huge dinner consumed the night before, there are always thousands of intrepid participants that show up for the fixed appointment every January 1st.” If someone can live through that, well surely they are ready to take on anything the new year throws at them…but the only sign I get from that idea are goose bumps!
