Una delle cose che preferisco fare a Lucca è noleggiare una bicicletta e fare un giro sulle mura medievali che circondano la città. Quale modo migliore per rilassarsi che pedalare lungo il viale alberato sopraelevato, fermandosi di tanto in tanto a sedersi su una panchina del parco, leggere un libro o guardare il mondo che passa?
One of my favorite things to do in Lucca is to rent a bike and take a spin on the medieval wall that encircles the town. What better way to unwind than to pedal along the elevated tree-lined avenue, stopping now and again to sit on a park bench, read a book, or watch the world by?
A Lucca è possibile noleggiare biciclette a ore, dalle piccole agenzie in prossimità dei principali portali della città. Il costo è minimo, ma la ricompensa è grande. Le mura di Lucca sono a circa 4,3 km (2,67 miglia), e puoi facilmente fare un tour della città in mezz’ora. I percorsi ombreggiati sono ampi, ci sono luoghi erbosi per fermarsi e prendere il sole o per fare un picnic. Essere gentile e attento con chi cammina con il cane e non abbiate paura di usare il campanello per avvertire i pedoni che si sta avvicinando.
In Lucca, you can rent bikes by the hour from small bike shops near the city’s major portals. The cost is minimal, but the rewards are great. Lucca’s wall is about 2.67 miles long, and you can easily do a lap around the city in less than half an hour. The shady paths are broad, and there are grassy patches of land to stop and soak up the sun or have a picnic. Be courteous and attentive to the dog walkers, and don’t be afraid to use your bicycle bell to alert pedestrians you that you are approaching.
Ora non è necessario preoccuparsi troppo delle macchine all’interno o sopra le mura di Lucca. Però una volta non era così. Una mia amica, una vera lucchese, Lorenza Bevicini mi disse che solo nel 1990 era vietato alle automobili di circolare all’interno delle mura! Ora l’unica volta che si vedrà una macchina sulle mura è per le occasioni speciali, come ad esempio una mostra della Fiat 500.
These days you won’t have to worry about many cars inside Lucca or on its walls. However, not long ago, that wasn’t the case! A friend and native Lucchese, Lorenza Bevicini, told me that it was only in 1990 that cars were banned from the walls! Now the only time you will see a car on the wall is for special occasions such as an exhibition of Fiat 500’s. On my friend’s site, “L’Italiano da Lontano,” you can see photos of the 2013 event.
È un bene che le auto sono state proibiti dalle mura. Incoraggia un’esperienza sociale, oltre ad essere rilassante camminare o andare in bici. È anche il modo migliore per ammirare il panorama di questa incantevole città.
It is just as well that cars were banned from Lucca’s wall. It encourages a much more social and relaxing experience to walk or bike the path. It is also a much better way to enjoy the views of this charming city.
Siete pronti! Facciamo una gita insieme! Dopo aver lasciato il noleggio di biciclette, si può traballare un po’ per la città fino a quando si trova l’equilibrio e la fiducia. Presto, però, vi ricorderete bene come andare in bicicletta (non dimenticherete mai, giusto?) e troverete la rampa più vicina per salire in cima alle pareti.
Are you ready? Let’s take a trip around the walls together! After pushing off from the bike rental agency, you may wobble a bit through the city until you gain your balance and confidence. But soon, you will remember how to use a bike (one never really forgets, right), and we will find the closest ramp to climb to the top of the wall.
Quando inizieremo a circolare nella parte meridionale della città, noteremo la cattedrale di Lucca – San Martino. Continuando l’escursione, passeremo davanti alla Casa della Boia, recentemente ristrutturata e oggi aperta al pubblico come museo.
As we begin circling the city on the southern end of town, we will notice Lucca’s cathedral — il Duomo di San Martino. Continuing the excursion, we will pass by the Casa del Boia – the medieval executioner’s house that has recently been renovated and is now open to the public as a museum.
Proseguendo lungo la strada, arriveremo al punto in cui Lucida Mansi, si dice sia annegata in uno stagno dopo essere stata inseguita dal diavolo. Ora è dove si trova l’orto Botanico. Non lontano da questo luogo, passeremo di fronte alla Scuola Italiana di Lucca, alla scuola e ai insegnanti con cui collaboro ai miei programmi di studio a Lucca.
Further down the road, we will come to the spot where Lucida Mansi is fabled to have drowned in a pond after being chased by the Devil. Now it is the site of the Botanical gardens. A short distance beyond that, we will pass by Lucca Italian School, where I will be next June with the group of language learners I have organized through the Matta website. Proseguendo in bicicletta, vi troverete presto vicino al Palazzo Pfanner dove potrete ammirare gli splendidi giardini dietro la villa.
Continuing to pedal our bikes we will soon pass by the Palazzo Pfanner where it is possible to admire the beautiful gardens behind the villa.
Lungo il percorso è bene ricordare di fare una pausa per bere uno spritz. C’è un bel posticino chiamato San Colombano che è il luogo ideale per rilassarsi ammirando la facciata di San Martino.
Along the way certainly, we must remember to stop and drink a spritz. There is a lovely little place called San Colombano that is a perfect spot to relax and unwind as we admire the facade of San Martino.
Si può rimanere quanto si vuole, ma sono sicuro che dopo un po’, si sente ancora una volta la necessità di tornare in bicicletta per fare un nuovo giro per la città! Su! Dai! Andiamo ancora una volta!
Stop as long as you like, but I’m sure, after a while, you will feel the urge once again to get back on your bike and circle the town again! Come on! Let’s go again!
