Borghese Gallery Arte Prende Vita Art Comes alive Rome

Uno dei miei posti preferiti in tutta Roma è Villa Borghese e i sui emotivi e naturalistici giardini paesaggistici. La villa è stata costruita nel 1605 dal cardinale Scipione Borghese, nipote di papa PaoloV. Il Cardinale era un amante dell’arte e un appassionato sostenitore di Bernini e Caravaggio. Infatti era stato uno dei primi ad apprezzare l’arte di Caravaggio e aveva iniziato a comprare le opere d’arte, come la “Madonna del Serpente”, che non era riuscito a soddisfare i funzionari della chiesa cattolica a causa delle rappresentazione troppo realistiche di personaggi biblici.

One of my favorite spots in all of Rome is the Villa Borghese and its emotive and naturalistic landscape gardens. The villa was built in 1605 by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the nephew of Pope Paul V. The Cardinal was an avid art lover and a patron of Bernini and a supporter of Caravaggio. He in fact was one of the first to appreciate the art of Caravaggio and began snapping up works of art, such as the “Madonna del Serpente” that failed to please local church officials due to their overly realistic representations of biblical figures.

Le pareti della villa riflettono la passione che il Cardinale Scipione aveva per l’arte; sono coperte da cima a fondo con tali opere d’arte notevoli come la “Deposizione di Cristo” di Raffaello, “Sacro e Profano Amore” di Tiziano e i dipinti di Peter Paul Rubens, Correggio, Messina, Parmigianino, Bellini e tanti altri. I dipinti sono appesi tutti insieme e l’effetto può essere molto travolgente e alcuni gioielli possono venir trascurati. Ho visto turisti passare davanti il dipinto “Leda e Cigno” di Leonardo senza battere ciglio o essere addirittura consapevoli della presenza di un dipinto di un grande Maestro!

Reflecting Cardinal Scipione’s love of art, the walls inside the of the villa are covered top to bottom, with such notable works of art as Raphael’s “Entombment of Christ”, Titian’s “Sacred and Profane Love” and paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, Correggio, Messina, Parmigianino, Bellini, and so many others. Paintings are hung jumbled together and the effect can be quite overwhelming at times, and certain gems can be overlooked. I have seen tourists walk right past Leonardo’s “Leda & the Swan” without blinking an eye or even being aware that they are missing a painting by a great master!

Il primo piano della villa è completamente dedicato alla scultura e qui si possono trovare alcune delle più belle opere di Bernini. Secondo me, non c’è nulla di più sorprendente che a stare di fronte alla statua di “Apollo e Dafne” o la versione di Bernini del “David”. Non si può fare meno di rimanere affascinato dalla potenza delle statute e allo stesso tempo dal vedere e apprezzare i dettagli e le sfumature delle sue tecniche d’intaglio.

The second floor of the villa is completely dedicated to sculpture and here you can find some of Bernini’s finest works. I tell you there is nothing more amazing than to stand in front of his statue of “Apollo & Daphne” or his version of “David”. You can’t help but be transfixed by the sheer power of the figures he creates, while at the same time notice and appreciate the details and the subtleties of his carving techniques.

Dopo aver goduto tutta la bellezza creata da essere umani all’interno della villa, facendo un passo fuori nei giardini si può apprezzare la bellezza paesaggistica della natura nei giardini Borghesi. Intorno alla villa c’è una vasta matrice di parchi modellati nello stile tradizionale inglese, con lunghi viali di ghiaia, grandi distese di prato, templi costruiti esclusivamente come elementi romantici e laghi pittoreschi. I parchi sono aperti al pubblico e si può godere una gita in bici o a piedi intorno al parco. I panorami sono incredibili. Dal punto più sud del parco vicino a Piazza del Popolo, avrete una delle più grandi vedute dal Pincio d’antica Roma.

Once you have drunk in all the man-made beauty inside the villa, by stepping outside into the gardens you will appreciate nature’s scenic beauty in the surrounding Borghese gardens. Enveloping the villa is a vast array of parks fashioned in the traditional English manner, featuring long gravel boulevards, large expanses of lawn, temples built purely as romantic features, and scenic lakes. The parks are open to the public and you can enjoy a stroll or bike ride around the park. The vistas are incredible. From the southern end of the park, closest to the Piazza del Popolo, you will have one of the greatest views of Rome from the Pincian Hill of ancient Rome.
