Alla ricerca del fantasma di Isabella de Medici nella villa dove è stata uccisa! Isabella è il soggetto del mio secondo romanzo “Waking Isabella”. Era la figlia di Cosimo I Granduca di Toscana e quando Cosimo morì suo fratello, Francesco, la fece uccidere perché potesse governare Firenze senza l’interferenza della sorella. Ma non si può tenere a freno una brava donna! Negli anni successivi ci sono state segnalazioni che Isabella infesta ancora i corridoi di Ceretto Guidi e si può ancora vedere il buco nel soffitto della sua camera da letto dove veniva calata una corda per impiccarla.

In search of Isabella de Medici’s ghost in the villa where she was murdered! Isabella is the subject of my second novel “Waking Isabella.” She was the daughter of Cosimo I the Grand Duke of Tuscany and when Cosimo died her brother, Francesco, had her killed so that he could rule Florence without his sister’s interference. But you can’t keep a good woman down! Over the years there have been reports that Isabella still haunts the halls of Ceretto Guidi AND you can still see the hole in the ceiling of her bedroom where a rope was lowered down to hang her.

about Ceretto Guidi and Isabella’s beautiful ghost.

Alcune anni fa ho fatto una gita a Cerreto Guidi. Avete mai sentito parlare di questo piccolo borgo in Toscana, ad un’ora a ovest di Firenze? È il luogo di una delle ville satellite di Cosimo I de’ Medici. Era una pratica comune dei Medici, sfuggire al caldo di Firenze, per prendere la residenza nella campagna con un intero entourage di servi e ospiti.

A couple of years ago I visited Cerreto Guidi. Have you heard of this small Tuscan town about an hour west of Florence? It is the site of one of Cosimo I de’ Medici’s satellite villas. It was quite a common practice of the ruling family to escape the heat of Florence and take up residence in the cooler countryside with an entire entourage of servants and guests.

Durante il quindicesimo secolo, la zona era densamente popolata da alberi e sottobosco ed era un luogo perfetto per ospitare feste in casa, con l’obiettivo principale di cacciare la selvaggina locale: cervi e cinghiali. Lì, all’ombra degli alberi, per cui la villa ha preso il suo nome, i Medici e i suoi amici cercavano passatempi piacevoli: cenare, ballare e armare i fucili per cacciare selvaggina.

During the fifteenth century, the area was densely populated by trees and underbrush and was a perfect location for hosting house parties with the objective of hunting local game – deer and wild boar. There in the shade of the trees, from which the villa took its name, the Medici and their friends pursued pleasurable pastimes — dining, dancing, and cocking guns to hunt game.

I Medici costruirono numerose case di caccia in tutta la Toscana, ma questa villa mi interessa particolarmente. Durante la mia ricerca per il romanzo “Waking Isabella,” ho scoperto che non era solo un qualsiasi altro palazzo dei Medici, ma anche piuttosto orrendamente, il luogo in cui la principessa del Rinascimento, Isabella figlia di Cosimo I – il granduca di Toscana – fu assassinata da suo marito, Paolo Giordano.

The Medici built numerous hunting lodges all over Tuscany, but this villa is of particular interest to me. During my research for my novel “Waking Isabella,” I discovered it was not just another Medici pleasure palace, but also rather gruesomely, the site where the Renaissance princess, Isabella the daughter of Cosimo I — the grand duke of Tuscany — was murdered by her husband, Paolo Giordano. 

Isabella era una ragazza ben educata e intelligente. Suo padre Cosimo la crebbe per essere indipendente e schietta. Quando sua madre Eleonora morì, divenne primadonna di Firenze, presiedendo i salotti dove i luminari e gli intellettuali della società europea si riunivano per discutere di ogni sorta di cose, compreso il dialetto toscano e la sua influenza sulla lingua italiana. 

Isabella was a well-educated and intelligent girl. Her father Cosimo I raised her to be independent and outspoken. When her mother Eleonora died, she rose to the position of being Florence’s leading lady, presiding over salons where the luminaries and intellectuals of European society gathered to debate all manner of things, including the Tuscan language and its influence on the Italian language.

Però, il suo stile di vita libertino, che comprendeva una relazione di lunga data con il cugino di suo marito, non si adattava bene né a Francesco suo fratello, né a Paolo suo marito. Isabella era imbarazzante per entrambi, perché non rispettava le loro regole e li faceva deridere dall’alta società fiorentina. Inoltre, non andava bene neanche per Francesco, perché sua sorella continuava a pretendere da lui l’eredità che il padre le aveva promessa. Preferiva tenere i soldi per sé e per la sua amante Bianca Cappello.

But, her libertine lifestyle, which included a long-standing affair with her husband’s cousin, didn’t sit well with either Francesco her brother, or for that matter, her husband. Isabella was an embarrassment to them both because she didn’t abide by their rules and made them both laughing stock in Florentine high society. It also didn’t sit well with Francesco that his sister continued to demand of him the inheritance their father had promised her. He preferred to keep the money to himself and for his mistress Bianca Cappello.

Poco dopo la morte di suo padre, senza un protettore, in un gioco di potere estremo, Francesco ha ordito un complotto per far tacere per sempre Isabella e la sua migliore amica e cugina, Leonora. Si dice che agli ordini di Francesco, il 16 luglio 1576, Isabella fu assassinata dal marito nella sua camera da letto a Cerreto Guidi. Una corda fu abbassata da un buco nel soffitto dalla stanza di sopra, e lei fu impiccata. Gli uomini sostenevano che Isabella fosse morta mentre si lavava i capelli e che suo marito l’aveva trovata per terra sul pavimento al suo arrivo.

After the death of her father, without a protector, in an extreme play for power, Francesco hatched a plot to silence for good both Isabella and her best friend and cousin, Leonora. It is said on Francesco’s orders, on July 16, 1576, Isabella was murdered by her husband in her bedroom of Cerreto Guidi. A cord was lowered from a hole in the ceiling above her room, and she was hung. The men claimed Isabella had died while washing her hair and that her husband had found her laying on the floor upon his arrival.

A causa delle misteriose circostanze della sua morte, la leggenda del fantasma di Isabella prese piede, e la gente afferma di aver visto il suo fantasma vagare per la villa e il terreno circostante. La storia divenne celebre quando nel 1950 una troupe di attori americani che stava filmando nella villa dichiarò di aver visto Isabella, che la gente del post all’epoca aveva chiamato la Dama Bianca.

Due to the mysterious circumstances of her death, the legend of Isabella’s ghost took hold, and people claim to have seen her ghost drifting about the villa and the surrounding grounds. The story caught fire when in 1950 a troupe of American actors filming at the villa claim to have seen Isabella, which the locals by that point had named the “White Lady.”

Ero piuttosto curiosa di visitare Cerreto Guidi e vedere con i miei occhi la casetta dei Medici dove fu assassinata la principessa rinascimentale…e forse anche incontrare il suo fantasma. Recentemente, una piccola cittadina è cresciuta intorno alla villa e la maggior parte degli alberi è stata abbattuta. Ora, invece, l’area circostante è costituita da vaste pianure coltivate a vigneti.

I was quite curious to visit Cerreto Guidi and see for myself the Medici hunting lodge where the Renaissance Princess was murdered…and perhaps even encounter her ghost. These days, a small little town has grown up around the villa, and most of the trees have been cut down. Now, instead, the surrounding area consists of sweeping plains where grapes are cultivated.

La villa è un po’ solitaria posta in alto sulla collina. Ora è un museo di armi da fuoco e attrezzature da caccia. È anche piena di ritratti dei Medici. Tuttavia, c’è una magnifica vista dalla finestra di Isabella…e nel mezzo della sua camera, se si alza lo sguardo, si può ancora vedere il piccolo buco nel soffitto in cui è stata inserita la corda che ucciso Isabella.

The villa is a bit lonely sitting high on the hill. It is now a museum of guns and hunting equipment. It is also full of portraits of the Medici. Still, there is a magnificent view from Isabella’s window…and if you stand in the middle of her bedroom and look up you can still see the small hole in the ceiling where the cord that killed Isabella was inserted from the room above.

Non posso dirvi di aver incontrato il fantasma di Isabella lo scorso giugno, durante la mia visita. Ma ho certamente sentito la sua presenza e la sua affinità mentre guardavo un suo ritratto di lei nella sua camera da letto. Era una sensazione piuttosto straordinaria chiudere gli occhi e immaginare la scena che si era svolta in quella camera da letto oltre quattrocento anni fa. Ho avuto la pelle d’oca.

I can’t say I met the ghost of Isabella last June, during my visit. But I certainly felt her presence and kinship as I gazed upon a portrait of her in her bedroom. It was quite an extraordinary feeling to close my eyes and imagine the scene that had played out in that very bedroom over four hundred years ago. I had goosebumps.
