Solo poche settimane fa sono stata a Roma con Kelly Medford – la pittrice americana che abita lì e ora chiama Roma la sua casa! Nonostante l’ondata di caldo che ha colpito Italia quest’anno, il mio gruppo ed io siamo riusciti a trovare alcuni posti freschi e ombrosi per disegnare e dipingere, usando i nostri acquarelli per catturare la nostre impressioni individuali di paesaggi urbani di Roma. Kelly ci ha guidate ad alcune parti molto interessanti della città che pochi turisti mai vedere. Abbiamo disegnato un obelisco egiziano nei giardini di Villa Celemontana e le arcate di una porta romana nel parco nascosto dietro il colosseo. Un altro giorno ci siamo seduti sulle panche vicino al larghetto nel giardino di Villa Borghese e abbiamo disegnato le barche e fontane, concentrandoci sulla chiarascura – le ombre viola e le macchie bianche del sole caldo pomeridiano.
Just a few short weeks ago I was in Rome painting with Kelly Medford the American artist who now calls Rome home! Despite the Italian summer heatwave, my group and I still managed to find some cool shady spots to sketch and draw and use our watercolors to capture our individual impressions of Rome’s unique cityscapes. Kelly guided us to some very interesting parts of the city that few tourists ever see. We sketched an Egyptian obelisk in the gardens of Villa Celemontana and the arches of a Roman gateway in a park tucked behind the Colosseo. Another day we sat by the little lake in the Borghese gardens and drew fountains and boats, concentrating on the cool purple shadows and the bright white highlights of the hot afternoon sun.
Abbiamo passato bei momenti, prendendo tempo per osservare tutti i dettagli di Roma – grandi e piccoli. La cosa importante da ricordare è che, non c’è bisogno di essere un’artista professionista per partecipare ad uno delle lezioni di Kelly. In effetti quello che lei insegna è un nuovo modo di vedere. Se ci concentriamo sull’ambiente intorno a noi, osservandolo intensamente, possiamo vivere più nel momento. Quindi anche il più piccolo degli schizzi cattura e registra uno stato d’animo o un momento speciale. L’arte non è solo qualcosa per gli individui artisticamente dotati. Piuttosto si tratta di un’esperienza personale, qualcosa che ognuno di noi può sviluppare e godere.
We had a lovely time taking time to pause and really focus on the details of Rome. The great thing about sketching programs with Kelly is that you don’t need to be an accomplished artist to participate. Indeed what she teaches is a new way of seeing. If we concentrate on the world around us, fully observing it, we can more conscientiously live in the moment. So, even the smallest of sketches capture and records a mood or a special moment. Art is not just something for gifted individuals. Rather it is a personal experience and one that each of us can develop and enjoy.
È stato molto divertente lavorare insieme, imparando come usare gli acquerelli e le varie tecniche di fare gli schizzi. All’inizio di ogni lezione, Kelly ci ha dato una dimostrazione, così come alcuni esercizi per aiutarci a sfruttare la nostra lati creativi. Poi ci ha liberati di scegliere una scena per catturarla nei quaderni che lei ha personalmente legati a mano. Alla fine di ogni lezione di arte abbiamo mostrato i nostri disegni agli altri e abbiamo apprezzato i vari stili e tecniche individuali.
It was a lot of fun to work together as a group learning to use watercolors and various sketching techniques. At the beginning of each session, Kelly gave a demonstration as well as some exercises, to help us tap into our creative sides. Then she set us free to capture scenes in custom-designed sketchbooks that she had personally bound by hand. At the end of each art session, we enjoyed reviewing each other’s work and appreciating the various styles and individual techniques.
