Dressing up like Eleonora de’ Medici! What a dream!

Ho sempre avuto questa fantasia segreta di travestirmi come Eleanor di Toledo. Questo desiderio viene dal nuovo libro che ho scritto dal titolo “Dreaming Sophia.” Avete mai visto il ritratto di Eleonora dipinto da di Agnolo di Cosimo Bronzino di Eleonora? Si trova nella Galleria degli Uffizi a Firenze e fu dipinto verso il 1545.

I have always fantasized about dressing like Eleonora de’ Medici. This desire is played out in my novel entitled “Dreaming Sophia.” Have you seen the painting by Agnolo di Cosimo Bronzino of Eleonora? It is housed in the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence and was painted around 1545.

La donna del ritratto è la moglie di Cosimo I dei Medici, Granduca di Toscana. Era la figlia di un nobiluomo spagnolo, Don Pedro de Toledo, marchese di Francavilla, viceré di Napoli e il più importante consigliere dell’imperatore Carlo V.

The woman featured in the portrait is the wife of Cosimo I de Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. She was the daughter of a Spanish nobleman, Don Pedro de Toledo, Marquis of Francavilla, the Viceroy of Naples, and the senior officer to Emperor Charles V.

In questo affascinante ritratto di Bronzino, Eleonora è seduta in un modo regale, con suo figlio Giovanni. Guarda lo spettatore, fiduciosa nel suo ruolo di moglie, madre, maestra di una grande casa, reggente e donna d’affari, così come una figura importante della dinastia dei Medici. Si tratta della donna ideale del Rinascimento. L’azzurro intenso dello sfondo dell’immagine enfatizza ulteriormente la grandezza della donna e valorizza la meravigliosa bellezza dell’abito di Eleonora che travolge visivamente le figure nella foto.

In this charming portrait by Bronzino, Eleonora is regally seated beside her small child Giovanni. She gazes at the viewer, secure in her role as a wife, mother, mistress of a large house, regent, businesswoman, and contributor to the Medici dynasty. She is depicted as the ideal woman of the Renaissance. The intense blue of the background of the picture further emphasizes the stateliness of the woman. It enhances the marvelous beauty of Eleonora’s dress which visually overwhelms the figures in the picture.

Come pittore di corte dei Medici a Firenze, il Bronzino dipinse numerosi ritratti. Le sue figure stilizzate con le loro linee lunghe ed eleganti pose furono altamente ammirate dai suoi maestri – i Medici. In questo particolare ritratto l’artista presta particolare attenzione all’elegante abito broccato di Eleonora, facendolo, con la mano dell’artisa, straordinario.

As court painter to the Medici in Florence, Bronzino produced large numbers of portraits. His stylized figures, with their long lines and elegant poses, were highly admired by his Medici patrons. In this particular portrait, the artist pays particular attention to Eleonora’s elegant formal brocade gown, rendering it with an astonishingly clever artistic hand.

Lo stile è fotorealistico. Con tanta abilità l’artista rende la dimensionalità del tessuto broccato di seta con i suoi fili d’oro e d’argento e disegni di arabeschi neri. Il disegno della stoffa è quello dei melograni, che si riferiscono all’abbondante fertilità di Eleonora e al suo importante ruolo di madre. (Infatti…in totale ha dato al luce undici figli!) Semplicemente guardando il dipinto si può sentire il peso del tessuto e il peso della collana d’oro e rubino che la duchessa indossa.

The clarity of style is photorealistic in style. The artist beautifully renders the dimensionality of the brocade silk fabric with its loops of gold, silver, and black arabesque designs. The motif is that of pomegranates, which refer to Eleonora’s abundant fertility and role as a mother. (In total, she produced eleven children!) Just by gazing at the painting, one can feel the weight of the fabric and the heft of the peals and gold ruby necklace that grace the duchesses’ throat.

Eleonora de’ Medici fu un mecenate e amante delle cose belle. Infatti Eleonora aveva assunto dieci tessitori d’oro e d’argento per lavorare sul suo abbigliamento da corte! Sebbene le voci dicono che era una scommettitrice, era una moglie devota e una madre affettuosa, e aumentò la fortuna dei Medici attraverso i suoi saggi investimenti. Testimonianza di questo può essere il Palazzo Pitti, che ha acquistato e ristrutturato. Fece anche realizzare il Giardino di Boboli, alle spalle del palazzo.

Eleonora de Medici was a patron of the arts and a lover of fine things. In fact, Eleonora kept ten gold and silver weavers in her employ to work on her court attire! Although rumored to be a gambler, she was also a devoted wife and mother and increased the Medici holdings through her wise investments. Testimony to this can be seen in the Pitti Palace, which she purchased and refurbished, along with the Boboli Gardens that grace the palace grounds.

A quanto pare non sono l’unica che pensa di vestirsi da Eleanora! Alcuni anni fa Fausto Fornasari, costumista vicino a Mantova, ha iniziato a ricreare l’abito di Eleonora che indossa nel dipinto del Bronzino. Ci sono voluti tre anni di studio al signor Fornasari per ricostruire l’abito e il risultato è una replica fedele, fino alla rete d’oro tempestato di perle intorno alle spalle e le maniche decorate.

Apparently, I am not the only one who fantasizes about dressing up like Eleonora! A few years ago, Fausto Fornasari, a costume maker based near Mantua, set about recreating Eleonora’s gown that she wears in the Bronzino painting. It took Mr. Fornasari’s King Studio three years to reconstruct the dress, and the result is a faithful replication, down to the pearl-studded gold netting around the shoulders and the decorated sleeves.

Inoltre, a Firenze è possibile andare in un piccolo negozio chiamato Tharros Bijous dove Carlo Amato, un gioielliere fiorentino, crea riproduzioni dei gioielli trovati nei celebri capolavori, come la collana indossata da Eleonora nella pittura del Bronzino e da altri celebri artisti come Botticelli, Michelangelo e Raffaello. L’ultima volta sono stata a Firenze ho incontrato la gioielliera a Firenze in Piazza della Repubblica!

Also, the next time you are in Florence, you can find a lovely little shop called Tharros Bijous where Carlo Amato, a Florentine jeweler, creates dazzling museum reproductions of jewelry found in famous masterpieces, like the necklace worn by Eleonora in Bronzino’s painting and by other celebrated artists such as Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Raffaello. In fact! Just today, I met the jeweler in Florence in Piazza della Repubblica!

Così, ancora oggi siamo in grado di vestirci come dei re e indossare gioielli, proprio come se anche noi fossimo usciti da un dipinto rinascimentale!

So, even today, we can dress like royalty and adorn ourselves with jewels, just as if we had stepped out of a Renaissance painting!
