C’erano una volta tre sorelle chiamate Micol, Giovanna and Zoe Fontana che cambiarono la storia della moda italiana.È successo durante gli anni quaranta e cinquanta del novecento.. Le tre sorelle abitavano a Traversetolo, vicino a Parma. Fin da piccolissime hanno appreso l’arte della sartoria dalla loro mamma Amabile. Un giorno però, convinta che il loro talento meritasse un pubblico più importante dei loro compaesani, Zoe disse alle sue sorelle: “Andiamo in stazione e prendiamo il primo treno che ci porta lontano”.

Once upon a time, three sisters named Micol, Giovanna, and Zoe Fontana changed the history of Italian fashion. It occurred during the 1940s and ’50s. When they were little girls, they learned the art of tailoring from their mother whose name was Amabile. But one day convinced that their talents deserved a bigger audience than their fellow villagers, Zoe said to her sisters: “Let’s go to the station and take the first train that will take us a long way away from here.”

Ecco così la favola è cominciata. Infatti, quel treno ha portato le tre sorelle lontano da casa.Hanno quasi toccato la luna e hanno girato tra le stelle. Non sto scherzando! Hanno disegnato costumi e vestiti per attrici famose come Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy e Elizabeth Taylor.Federico Fellini ha anche chiesto alle sorelle di disegnare i costumi per il suo film “La Dolce Vita” sottolineando una delle scene più iconografiche nella storia del cinema.

And so the fairytale began. Indeed that train took the three sisters far far away from home. They almost touched the moon and wandered amongst the stars. I’m not joking. They designed costumes and dresses for famous actresses like Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Elizabeth Taylor. Federico Fellini also asked the sisters to create costumes for his film “La Dolce Vita” thus bookmarking one of the most iconographic moments in film history.

Durante gli anni cinquanta e sessanta l’atelier Fontana era sulla bocca di tutti. Ma all’inizio della loro carriera, quando le sorelle si sono trovate a Roma per la prima volta, erano poverissime, non erano in grado di acquistare i tessuti per confezionare gli abiti di alta moda e quindi si limitavano a riparare gli orli delle clienti. Però tutto cominciò a cambiare grazie a una principessa che si offrì di indossare alle cene di gala in posti come Villa Torlonia le creazioni Fontana. Fu così che le donne aristocratiche romane, stregate dallo splendore e dall’innovazione dei modelli, si presentavano dalle stiliste. Ma il boom della moda per le sorelle arrivò con l’abito da sposa per la mamma di Romina Power, Linda Christian per il suo matrimonio con Tyron Power.

During the fifties and the sixties, the Atelier Fontana was on the lips of everyone. But at the beginning of their careers, when the sisters first found themselves in Rome, they were poor and couldn’t even buy material to make high fashion dresses they reluctantly took on the work of repairing and hemming dresses. But everything started to change thanks to a princess that offered to wear their clothes for gala banquets in places like Villa Torlonia. In this way, the aristocratic women of Rome, charmed by the splendor of the Fontana sisters’ work began to present themselves requesting gowns of their own. But the fashion boom for the sisters occurred with they were asked to design a wedding dress for the mother of Romina Power, Linda Christian for her marriage to Tyron Power.

C’è anche un’altra famosa storia di un abito da sposa disegnato dalle sorelle Fontana—l’abito di sposa di Audrey Hepburn mai indossato. Si racconta che Audrey Hepburn fosse stata promessa in sposa ad un lord inglese ma sul set di Vacanze Romane la giovanissima attrice si innamorò dell’attore coprotagonista Gregory Peck. Anche se cancellò il matrimonio, Audrey pagò comunque l’abito e lo regalò alla dipendente più povera della Maison Fontana.

There is also another famous story about a Fontana wedding dress—the wedding dress that Audrey Hepburn never wore! As the story goes, Audrey Hepburn was supposed to marry an English lord, but on the set of “Roman Holiday”, the young actress fell in love with her co-star Gregory Peck. Despite canceling the wedding, Audrey however, paid for the dress and gave it to one of the poorest seamstresses at the Fontana company.

Delle tre sorelle Micol ha vissuto più a lungo. Ha compiuto 101 anni. Dopo la scomparsa delle sorelle Zoe nel 1978 e Giovanna nel 2007, Micol ha iniziato una linea Micol Boutique per una clientelle più giovane. La stilista ha scritto un libro “Specchio a tre luci” e all’età di 97 anni, ha anche fatto un cameo nel ruolo di se stessa all’inizio e alla fine della fiction fermata Rai, “Atelier Fontana”.

Of the three sisters, Micol lived the longest. She reached 101 years. After the loss of her sisters Zoe in 1978 and Giovanna in 2007, she began a dress line called Micol Boutique for a younger clientele. The designer wrote a book called “Specchio a tre luci” (A mirror with three lights) and even had a cameo appearance as herself in the RAI fiction drama about her life called “Atelier Fontana.”
