Flash Sticks App – Learn and Retain Italian Vocabulary with Pictures

Oggi mi diverto molto con una nuova applicazione di FlashSticks. / Today I am having a lot of fun with a new app from FlashSticks.

Quello che mi piace di più di questa applicazione è che posso fare una foto di qualsiasi cosa con il cellulare e FlashSticks offrirà una traduzione con un audio clip, ad aiutarmi con la pronuncia. Guardate! Ho scattato una foto della mia cane Moka, e nel giro di pochi secondi FlashSticks mi aveva detto che la foto era di un cane…in particolare, un Beagle. Scommetto che la prossima versione dell’app mi dirò il suo proprio nome!

What I love even more about this app, is that I can take a picture of anything with my phone and FlashSticks offers up a written translation with an audio clip, to help me with pronunciation. Look! I took a picture of my dog Moka, and within just a few seconds FlashSticks told me that the photo was of a dog…specifically a Beagle. I bet the next version of the app will even tell me her name!

Questa mattina sono diventata matta con questo app (normale per questa studentessa!) e ho cominciato a scattare foto di oggetti vari a casa mia. Volevo vedere con che precisione l’app funziona. Quello che ho scoperto è che l’app non si limita a tradurre il nome di un oggetto, ma anche lo descrive.

This morning I went a little crazy (as this studentessa is prone to do!) and I started taking pictures of various objects around the house. I wanted to see how accurate the translations of the app were. What I discovered is that the app doesn’t just tell you the name of an object, but it also describes it.

Per esempio, l’app non ha tradotto questa immagine solo come un “piatto”. Mi ha detto che era un piatto di ceramica, con colori bianco e blu, con un disegno floreale in verde e giallo! Figo!

For instance, the app didn’t just translate this image as a “plate”. It told me that it was a blue and white ceramic plate with a floral pattern in green and yellow. That’s cool!

Per questa immagine, non l’ha tradotta semplicemente come un bicchiere, ma mi ha dato un po’ di più informazione sull’oggetto, descrivendolo come : un bicchiere di vino chiaro.

For this image, it didn’t just tell me that this was simply a glass, but it gave a bit more information about the object, describing it as: A clear wine glass.

L’app ha tradotto quest’immagine come un marrone pianoforte verticale.

The app translated this image as a brown upright piano.

L’app mi ha informato che questa scarpa non era solo una scarpa con tacco alto, ma che era un tacco alto rosso, con un cinturino in cuoio marrone alla caviglia.

The app informed me this shoe wasn’t just a high heel, but it was a red high heel, with a brown leather ankle strap.

Ero un po’ sorpresa su di questa traduzione. Sembra che FlashSticks sappia la differenze tra i girasoli reali e girasoli artificiali. Oddio! FlashSticks sa i miei segreti d’arredamento!

I was a little surprised by this translation. It seems that FlashSticks can tell the difference between real sunflowers and fake sunflowers! Yikes! FlashSticks is on to my interior decorating secrets!

Santo cielo! Ha anche identificato il marchio di questi occhiali da sole!

Good heavens! It even identified the brand of these sunglasses!

Inoltre ha riconosciuto questa maschera. Ma, penso che l’app sia un po’ daltonica. L’app pensa che la maschera sia marrone e non d’oro.

It also recognized this mask. But, the app is a little color blind. It thinks the mask is brown and not gold.

Allora, con tutte le traduzioni fatte sul computer, come quella di Google, gli studenti devono usare un po’ di cautela quando le utilizzano. Cio è prendete alcune traduzioni con un grano di sale. Per esempio, quando ho cercato una traduzione di questa immagine – le mie scarpe di ballerina – l’ha tradotta come “appartamenti a punta nere e grigie con accento diamante” . Forse sono in grado di vivere in queste scarpe per un giorno, ma sono sicura che non sono “appartamenti”!

Now, as with all automated translation apps, like Google’s Translation app, students must apply a little caution when using them. That is, take some translations with a grain of salt. For instance, when I sought a translation for this image – my shoes, or flats – it translated the image as “pointed apartments, black and gray with diamond accents” . While I might be able to live in these shoes for a day, they are definitely not “apartments”!

Forse l’app era un po’ stanca a questo punto, perché ci è voluto un po’ di tempo prima di tradurre che quest’immagine  come Pinocchio, e invece di usare la parola italiana “bambola”, ha sostituito la parola inglese “doll”.

Maybe the app was getting a little tired at this point, because it took a little while before translating this image as Pinocchio, and instead using the Italian word “bambola” it substituted the English word “doll”.

L’app ha tradotto questa imagine come un “grill” usando la parola inglese e non la parola italiana – “una griglia”. Ma nella sua difesa, ha impreziosito la traduzione dicendomi che era un grill “all’aperto!” Deve solo aggiungere che la griglia è molto vecchia e cade a pezzi!

It also told me that this was a “grill” using the English word and not the Italian word – “una griglia”. But in its defense, it embellished the translation telling me it was an outside grill! It just needs to add that the grill is very old and is falling to pieces!

Quando ho cercato la traduzione di questa immagine, invece di rispondere “vasetto di Nutella” la risposta era: “diffusione Nutella”. Strano! Penso che questa traduzione riferisca al coltello sulla etichetta che spalma la Nutella su un pezzo di pane…o forse FlashSticks sa che la Nutella vuole dominare il mondo!

When I queried the app for a translation of this image, instead of responding “Jar of Nutella” it came back with “diffusion Nutella”. Strange! I think this translation is referring to the knife on the label that is spreading the Nutella on the piece of bread…or perhaps FlashSticks knows that Nutella wants to “take over the world”! 

Come una sfida finale, FlashSticks ha identificato questa immagine perfettamente come il mio biglietto da visita. FlashSticks ha anche saputo il mio nome! Così all fine, perché ha riconosciuto “la studentessa matta” FlashSticks supera la mia prova!

As a final challenge, FlashSticks identified this image perfectly as my business card. FlashSticks even knew my name! So in the end, because it recognized “la studentessa matta” FlashSticks passes my test! 🙂

Penso che voi avrete un po’ di divertimento con questa applicazione. Aiuterà ad aumentare il vostro vocabolario, aiutandovi a pronunciare bene le parole. Vedere le parole, creare una associazione con l’immagine e poi sentire l’audio, il vostro cervello riterrà più facilmente le nuove informazioni. Credo che gli aggettivi e le descrizione che l’applicazione fornisce, siano anche molto informativi.

I think you will have some fun with this app. It will boost your spoken foreign language vocabulary, by helping you to pronounce words correctly. By seeing a word, creating an association with the icon, and then hearing the word, your brain will retain information more easily. I think the adjectives and extra descriptive text that the app provides are also informative as well.

Basta ricordare di usare l’app in un modo intelligente e se avete una domanda su di una traduzione, fate riferimento ad un dizionario italiano o meglio ancora…chiedete ad un amico italiano!

Just remember to work with the app intelligently and if you have a question about a translation, always refer to an Italian dictionary, or better yet…. ask an Italian friend!
