Avete mai sentito il nome di Giorgio Vasari? Vasari era un pittore, un’architetto, uno scrittore e uno storico. Soprattuto è molto famoso per un libro intitolato “Le Vite de’ più eccellenti pittori, scultori, ed architetti”. È considerato il “padre” della storia dell’arte.

Have you heard the name, Giorgio Vasari? Vasari was an Italian painter, architect, writer, and historian. He is most famous for one particular written work called “Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects.” He is considered the “father” of art history.

Vasari nacque ad Arezzo nel 1511, in Toscana.Durante il mio recente soggiorno ad Arezzo ho girato per le strade in cui Vasari ha camminato, ho fatto colazione nella loggia che lui ha progettato nella grande piazza e ho visitato la casa dove lui ha vissuto.Dopo secoli, la casa è ancora ben conservata e rimane invariata. Vasari was born in Arezzo in 1511, in Tuscany. During my recent stay in Arezzo, I walked the very streets that Vasari walked, had breakfast in the loggia that he designed in the Piazza Grande and I visited the house where he lived. Even after several centuries’s the artist’s house has been preserved and remains unchanged. The rooms, magnificently frescoed by Giorgio Vasari himself, show Biblical and Mythological scenes, sacred and profane allegories as well as scenes of antiquity.

Anche se ha dedicato la sua vita alla pittura e all’architettura, la vera consacrazione alla fama di questo Aretino è un piccolo libro che ha scritto sui suoi contemporanei, Michelangelo e Leonardo, così come i loro maestri Donatello, Verrocchio, Giotto e Cimabue e tanti altri artisti della sua epoca. Il libro dedicato a Cosimo I de’ Medici, più di una compilazione delle biografie dei pittori, è notevole per la ricchezza di informazioni personali e i dettagli delle loro opere. Although he dedicated his life to painting and architecture, it was the Aretino’s true claim to fame is the little book he wrote about his friends and contemporaries, Michelangelo and Leonardo, as well as their masters, Donatello, Verrocchio, Giotto, and Cimabue. The book dedicated to Cosimo I de’ Medici is compiled of biographies of the most important painters of his day and age. His stories are notable for their insight and wealth of personal information. He understood artistic trends and changing public attitudes towards artists and the way they painted.

In effetti è stato Vasari stesso che ha inventato il termine “Rinascimento” in stampa e che ha usato il termine “Gotico” per descrivere il periodo dell’arte che precede la fioritura delle arti a Firenze durante la sua vita. Per quanto informative e fedeli alla verità, le storie di Vasari sono anche cosparse da pettegolezzi divertenti e aneddoti inventati, quindi le storie dovrebbero essere lette tenendo presente questo.

Indeed it was Vasari who first coined the term “Renaissance” in print, and used the term “Goth” to describe the period of art preceding the flowering of arts in Florence during his day and age. As informative and true to many facts as Vasari was, his stories are also sprinkled with funny anecdotes and invented gossip, so the book should be read with eye to this as well.

Vasari ebbe una carriera lunga e prestigiosa. Visse oltre che nella sua città natale di Arezzo, anche a Firenze e a Roma. Costruì la loggia di Arezzo, nonché la loggia della Galleria degli Uffizi. Fu anche incaricato da Cosimo I de’ Medici a costruire il corridoio che collega gli Uffizi con il palazzo Pitti. Inoltre dipinse gli affreschi del Salone dei Cinquecento nel Palazzo Vecchio, coprendo i tentative falliti di Leonardo e i disegni iniziali di Michelangelo.

Vasari enjoyed a long and prestigious career. He spent time in his hometown of Arezzo as well as in Florence and Rome. He built the loggia in Arezzo as well as the loggia that graces the Uffizi Gallery. He also was commissioned by Cosimo I de Medici to build the corridor that connects Uffizi with the Pitti Palace. He also painted the murals in the Palazzo Vecchio’s Salone del Cinquecento, covering up the failed attempts of Leonardo and the initial beginning renderings of Michelangelo.

Di origine la famiglia di Vasari proveniva da Cortona e lui fu educato come un’umanista nella scuola di Andrea del Sarto, un pittore dell’alto rinascimento. All’inizio della sua carriera artistica Vasari divenne amico di Michelangelo, dal cui stile fu fortemente influenzato. Durante la sua vita il suo lavoro, in particolare i suoi dipinti manieristi, sono stati ammirati ed i Medici erano i suoi più grandi mecenati. Purtroppo, l’opera artistica di Vasari, anche se compiuta con colori ricchi e audaci, non ha superato la prova del tempo ed è caduta in disgrazia presso i critici.

Originally Vasari’s family came from Cortona and he was educated as a humanist education in the circle of Andrea del Sarto, a High Renaissance painter. Early in his art career, Vasari was befriended by Michelangelo whose style greatly influenced his own. During his lifetime his work, especially his mannerist paintings, was greatly admired and the Medici’s of Florence were his greatest patrons. Unfortunately, Vasari’s artistic opera, while accomplished, featuring bold rich colors, has not stood the test of time and has fallen out of favor with critics.

Fortunatamente per noi, ancora oggi la vera eredità di Vasari è la preziosa intuizione che ci ha dato e lo sguardo nelle vite dei suoi amici, i grandi artisti della sua epoca.

Fortunately for us, still today Vasari’s real legacy is the invaluable insight he gave us into some of the greatest artists of his time—namely his friends and fellow artists, Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo.
