Ho appena iniziato una nuova rubrica sulla pagina di Facebook di Studentessa Matta intitolataGram-Matti-calmente Corretta. Ogni giorno pubblico una briciola di grammatica. Di solito, scrivo di un problemino di lingua che mi ha dato difficoltà o che al momento si presenta in una conversazione o in una scrittura.

I have started a new “feature post” on the Studentessa Matta Facebook page called: Gram-Matticalmente Corretta. Once a day I post a grammar crumb. Usually, I write about a language issue that either used to give me difficulty or that currently comes up in conversation or writing.

Prendo nota delle domande grammaticali che mi fanno inciampare o di parole che mi sfuggono. Mi rendo conto che se buttasi giù due righe e li parlassi, avrò una migliore possiblità di ricordarli.

I make a note of the little grammar glitches that trip me up or words that escape me. I realize if I jot them down and talk about them, I will have a better chance of remembering them.

Per esempio, ecco alcune cose che ho pubblicato su Facebook.

Take for instance a couple of recent items I have posted about on Facebook.

Yesterday I posted this Gram-MATTI-calmente Corretta moment

Mini-grammar lesson: Going and coming

Andare = going

Venire = coming

Round trip ticket = Biglietto di andata e ritorno

One way ticket = Biglietto di sola andata

To visit someone = Andare a trovare qualcuno

Chi volete andare a trovare oggi? Avete bisogno di un biglietto di andata e ritorno o un biglietto di sola andata? Buon viaggio!

Today’s “Gram-MATTI-calmente Corretta moment

Mini-gramma lesson:
Date, Dates, Data, Dating and the Dates you eat

For some reason, I can never keep them sorted out, and never remember if the word for data information is singular or plural. So, let’s sort them out together.

Date (referring to time) = La data. (la data di oggi è il 20 Marzo)

Dates (referring to time plural) = Le date. (Le date di inizio e fine del suo congedo di maternità)

Data (referring to information) = Dati (always plural) (Quei dati dimostrano che i prezzi stanno scendendo)

Dating (as in going out with someone) is easy to remember in Italian = appuntamento (Ho un appuntamento col coinquilino di Davide)

Dating (as in going out with someone could also be simply “uscire insieme”)

A blind date = un appuntamento al buio (Mamma, non mi serve un appuntamento al buio!)

And finally…how the heck do you say date meaning dried fruit!

Dates (the kind you eat) = Datteri essiccati, o Datteri secchi, o fichi secchi (Questi noci di cocco, banane, datteri e fichi sono buonissimi)

Come visit the Studentessa Matta Facebook page where you will find lots of random things I post about Italy, photos, and expressions, as well as links to interesting videos and articles — and now my “Gram-MATTI-calmente Corretta post of the day!
