Oggi sono felice di presentarvi la mia amica Paola Testi, la direttrice e fondatrice della scuola italiana Cultura Italiana Arezzo. Arezzo si trova in Toscana, a circa un’ora (in treno) a sud di Firenze. È un bel paese, e ho avuto l’opportunità di visitare Arezzo un paio di anni fa quando ho soggiornato lì vicino, nella campagna a Tenuta Lupinari. Recentemente sono stata contattata da Paola e abbiamo avuto diverse chat interessanti su Skype. Lei è molto simpatica! In un guest postPaola si presenta e ci racconta il suo sogno di realizzare una scuola per gli stranieri ad Arezzo. Lei condivide con noi la sua filosofia sulla didattica e ci racconta alcune delle cose più interessanti da vedere nella sua amata città di Arezzo.
Today I am happy to present to you all my friend Paola Testi, the founder, and director of the Italian School called Cultura Italiana Arezzo. Arezzo is located in Tuscany about an hour (by train) south of Florence. It is a beautiful little town, and I had the occasion to visit Arezzo a couple of years ago, when I staying nearby, at Tenuta Lupinari. I was recently contacted by Paola and we have had several lovely Skype chats. She is warm and friendly and simply delightful. In a guest post, Paola introduces herself and tells us about her dream of starting an Italian school for foreigners in her hometown of Arezzo. She shares with you her philosophy about teaching and tells about some of the most interesting things to see in her beloved town of Arezzo.

Ciao a tutti! Mi chiamo Paola Testi e sono la direttrice e fondatrice di Cultura Italiana Arezzo. La mia avventura inizia circa 15 anni fa quando, per puro caso, comincio a lavorare come insegnante di italiano per stranieri qui ad Arezzo nella sede secondaria di una grande scuola di Bologna. Da quel momento nasce in me una vera e propria passione per la mia lingua e per l’insegnamento e allo stesso tempo scopro, con mia grande sorpresa, quante persone in tutto il mondo sono accomunate dall’amore per la lingua e la cultura italiana. Tre anni fa la grande svolta: non senza qualche timore e paura decido di cominciare la mia attività indipendente dalla sede madre con una sua specifica identità sulla base di una nuova idea di scuola che avevo maturato negli anni.
Hi everybody! My name is Paola Testi and I am the director and founder of Cultura Italiana Arezzo. My adventure began about 15 years ago when by chance, I began to work as a teacher of Italian for foreigners, here in Arezzo, in a branch of a large school with headquarters in Bologna. That moment was born a real passion for my language and for teaching, and at the same time, I discovered, to my great surprise, that there are so many people around the world who are united by their love for the Italian language and culture. Three years ago was the great turning point: non without a bit of fear and trepidation, I decided to begin my own independent business, independent from the Bolognese School, with a unique identity based on a new idea that I had thought about and nurtured over the years.
Il mio sogno era creare una realtà dinamica, flessibile, familiare dove gli studenti potessero sentirsi come a casa e soprattutto una scuola legata alla realtà locale. Sono convinta infatti che nell’apprendimento di una lingua non dobbiamo assolutamente trascurare la profondità delle implicazioni personali, culturali e sociali che essa comporta; la lingua non è solo un codice tecnico ma un’esperienza che deve essere vissuta a 360 gradi. Come per molte altre esperienze anche per quella linguistica ci sono molte cose che non si possono spiegare, ma solo vivere, fare, provare!!!
My dream was to create a dynamic, flexible, and friendly place where students feel at home and above all else a school that has ties to the local area. In fact, I am convinced that to learn a language we must not overlook the profundity of personal, cultural, and social connections; the language is not just a technical code but an experience to be lived in 360 degrees. As in many other experiences, also language is something that must be experienced because many things can’t be explained…they must be lived and sampled.
Ecco perché nella nostra scuola le attività culturali cioè le visite, le escursioni, i corsi di cucina e tutte le esperienze dirette a contatto con la realtà del luogo sono parte integrante delle lezioni in classe. I nostri studenti possono scoprire così in modo esclusivo e genuino la parte vera della nostra terra, la sua cultura e quindi gli aspetti più interessanti della lingua stessa
That’s why in our school, cultural activities, that is visits, excursions, cooking classes, and all direct experiences that put the students in contact with the reality of this place is an integral part of classroom instruction. Our students can discover in an exclusive way the genuine and real part of our country, its culture, and the most interesting aspects of the language itself.
Grazie ad uno staff dinamico, intraprendente, professionale e soprattutto collaborativo oggi posso dire di essere riuscita a realizzare il mio progetto. Attualmente infatti sono circa 200 le persone che ogni anno scelgono di venire ad Arezzo a frequentare uno dei nostri corsi di lingua.
Thanks to a dynamic, enterprising, and professional staff that is above all extremely collaborative, today I can say that I am able to carry out my project. Currently in fact there are about 200 people who choose to come to Arezzo every year and attend our language courses.
Le nazionalità presenti sono le più varie: abbiamo molti studenti europei ma anche americani, australiani, giapponesi, brasiliani e sudamericani in genere. Pochi universitari ma 40enni e 50enni e spesso anche più “grandi” che si concedono soggiorni più o meno lunghi nella nostra città per imparare una lingua da cui sono affascinati e vivere e respirare la cultura locale di cui puntualmente si innamorano con Arezzo. Ecco perché molti tornano anche più di una volta all’anno e qualcuno resta così colpito dalla città che non riparte più!
The nationalities are varied: we have many European students, but also American, Australian, Japanese, Brazilian, and South American. There are a few college-age students, and many 40 – 50-year-old students and often even older students who stay for longer periods in our city to learn a language which has fascinated them and to live and breath the local culture and promptly fall in love with Arezzo. That’s why so many returns, sometimes twice a year, and some who are so taken with the city they don’t want to leave!
Arezzo è una città di piccole dimensioni ma con una grande storia. Famosa per la produzione di raffinata gioielleria, è stata il luogo di nascita del benedettino Guido Monaco o Guido d’Arezzo, inventore nell’ XI sec. delle note musicali, di Petrarca, di Giorgio Vasari e di Pietro Aretino mentre un grande artista e matematico come Piero della Francesca ha lasciato in questa città il suo capolavoro. Si tratta dello straordinario ciclo di affreschi del Rinascimento “La Leggenda della Vera Croce”, considerato una pietra miliare della storia dell’arte universale.
Il centro storico medievale e rinascimentale di Arezzo è molto ben conservato è stato immortalato da Roberto Benigni nella celebre pellicola “La vita è bella” vincitrice di un Oscar nel 1999.
Arezzo is a small town but it has a great history. It is famous for the production of fine jewelry and was the birthplace of the Benedictine Monk Guido d’Arezzo, the inventor of modern musical notation, as well as the poet Petrarch, the first Art Historian Giorgio Vasari, and Pietro Aretino. Arezzo is also where the great artist and mathematician Piero della Francesca left this city his masterpiece. This is the extraordinary cycle of Renaissance frescoes “The Legend of the True Cross”, which is a milestone in the history of art.
The historic city center of the medieval and Renaissance is very well preserved and was immortalized in the famous film by Roberto Benigni – “Life is Beautiful” which won an Oscar in 1999.

Inoltre vi consiglio vivamente una passeggiata nella fortezza medicea, un giro tra i banchi della fiera dell’antiquariato (la più importante d’Italia) che si svolge ogni prima domenica del mese, e un tuffo nel medioevo partecipando a una delle 2 edizioni della Giostra del Saracino, torneo a cavallo tra i 4 quartieri della città che affonda le sue radici storiche nel tempo delle crociate in Terra Santa.
I also highly recommend that you take a walk in the Medici fortress, to see stalls of the antiques fair which take place every first Sunday of the month, and dip into the Middle Ages by participating in one of the two Saracino horse tournaments that involve the 4 neighborhoods of the city and which has its roots in the time of the Holy Crusades
