È il sei gennaio e il giorno della bella brutta Befana!
It is the sixth of January and Happy Befana Day!
Natale e Capodanno potrebbero essere finiti, ma le vacanze invernali non sono tutte concluse. La Befana è appena arrivata e oggi festeggiamo il giorno dell’Epifania – il giorno in cui i magi, seguendo la stelle di Betlemme hanno scoperto Gesù.
Christmas and New Year may be over, but the winter holidays don’t end there. The Befana has just arrived and we are now celebrating Epiphany – the day when the three Wise Men, following the star of Bethlehem, found the baby Jesus.
Ogni anno quando libero dalla sua scatola, la bambola artigianale della Befana che proviene dal mercato di Natale a Roma, mi viene in mente la leggenda della strega d’Italia, che è stata trasformata in un filantropo che da i regali ai bambini. Secondo la storia, la Befana era una vecchia donna avara, troppo occupata con il suo lavoro domestico per aiutare i tre re. Non ha smesso di lavorare per preparare qualcosa per loro da mangiare. Non li ha neanche dato le indicazioni. Invece li scacciò via con la scopa!
Each year when I unwrap the handcrafted Befana doll that came from the Christmas markets in Rome, I remember the legend of Italy’s good witch, who was transformed into a gift-giving philanthropist. As the story goes, la Befana was a miserly old woman, too busy with her housework to help the Kings. She refused to stop her work to give them food, not even directions. Instead she shooed them away with her broom!
Ma dopo che i suoi visitatori partirono, come una buona moglie e madre, lei diventasti rapidamente rimorsa e su rammarica delle sue azioni. Così sentendosi terribilmente in colpa per il suo comportamento cattivo prese la scopa e se ne andò alla ricerca del bambino lei stessa. Durante i viaggi si fermò e diede un regalo a tutti i bambini che incontrava lungo la sua strada.
But, after her visitors departed, like a good wife and mother, she quickly became remorseful and regretted her actions. So, feeling terribly bad about the unkind behavior she picked up her broom and went in search of the baby herself. During her travels, she stopped and gave a small gift to every child she encountered along her way.
Penso di conoscere bene la Befana, e quindi probabilmente è arrivata alla mangiatoia ben prima dei re. Sono sicura che nel frattempo lei aveva anche ha preparato un pasto caldo in attesa di loro, oltre ad aver ripulito la stalla con la sua scopa. Lasciate fare a una donna per sistemare tutte le cose correttamente!
Knowing la Befana, she probably arrived at the scene of the manger well before the kings. I’m sure she even had a hot meal waiting for them, as well as having cleaned out the manager with her broom. Leave it to a woman to get things done properly!
La leggenda della Befana si dice sia iniziata nella città di Urbania nelle Marche. La storia è anche più vecchia di Babbo Natale. Ogni anno la città ospita un festival nazionale. Volevo condividere con voi un video che è stato registrato dalla mia amica Simone di Santi di “A Road Retraveled” nel 2014.
The Legend of la Befana is said to have begun in the town of Urbania in le Marche. The story is even older than Santa Claus. Each year the town hosts a national festival. I wanted to share with you a video that was made by my friend Simone di Santi of “A RoadRetraveled” in 2014.
