Le vacanze italiane stanno finendo. Tra poco mi troverò di nuovo a casa in California. Sto bene qui nel Salento e già sento la nostalgia della masseria, gli ulivi, la terra e la gente che si trovano qui. Scrivo questo post sulla terrazza della masseria, accanto alla cucina. Sento il rumore del vento che soffia dolcemente le foglie degli alberi di fico, sento un buon profumo che esce dalla cucina e sento le voci delle donne allegre che stanno preparando il pasto che presto mangerò con gli amici.
My Italian holiday is almost over. Before long I will find myself at home again in California. I’m doing well here in the Salento and I’m already feeling a bit nostalgic for the farmhouse, the olive trees the land, and the people you find here. I am writing this post on the terrace next to the farmhouse kitchen. I hear the soft breeze rustling the leaves of the fig tree, I smell wonderful aromas emerging from the kitchen and hear the voices of the happy and animated women who are preparing a wonderful lunch that I will soon enjoy.
Tra poco assaggerò i tutti i buoni gusti delle verdure fresche fresche appena raccolte dall’orto. Un uomo, di una certa età, con una faccia rugosa del tempo, sta facendo una passeggiata nell’orto. Si avvicina e mi sorride e mi augura una buona giornata. (Penso che voglia sapere che sto scrivendo al mio computer!). Infatti lui comincia uno scambio di parole.
Soon I will savor the flavors of the fresh vegetables just picked from the garden. An adorable man, of advanced age with a face weathered by age, is taking a walk about the garden. He smiles at me and wishes me a good day. (I think he wants to know what I am writing about on my computer!) Indeed, he begins an exchange of pleasantries with me. The people in the south are like this.
Le persone qui nel sud sono così. Sono molto affettuose e gentili. Non solo la gente della masseria sono carine ma anche gli animali! Sollevendo lo sguardo dallo schermo del computer, vedo le gabbie intorno all’orto che sono piene delle galline, i maialini e anche un piccolo cavallo. I cani dormono al sole ai miei piedi e i gatti, e ce ne sono un sacco, girano intorno alla terrazza. Uno di loro decide di saltare sulla tavola per sedersi sulla tastiera del mio portatile. Buon giorno signore gatto! Qui la vita è tranquilla. Si svolge lentamente. Questa vita… mi mancherà…molto.
They are very affectionate and kind. Not only the people are delightful here at the farmhouse, but so are the animals! Raising my gaze from my computer screen I see the pens surrounding the vegetable garden full of chickens, piglets, and even a little horse. The dogs are asleep in the sun at my feet and the cats (there are a bunch of them!) wander around the patio. One of them decides to jump onto the table and sit down on the keyboard of my laptop. Well hello, Mr. Cat! Here life is tranquil. It unfolds slowly. This life…I will miss…a lot.
Queste settimane d’immersione nella lingua e la cultura della Basilicata e di Puglia sono andate a gonfie vele. Mi sono trovata bene nel sud grazie ai tutti i miei soci! Voglio ringraziare specialmente le amiche, Ilaria Navarra (Matera) e Ylenia Sambati (Puglia). Queste donne sono fantastiche. Grazie dal cuore ragazze, per la collaborazione super speciale. Si può vedere facilmente che queste donne amano la terra dei loro paesi e l’Italia in generale. È stato il nostro desiderio e la nostra visione a creare le vacanze speciali per gli appassionati della lingua. Volevamo creare un’esperienza… come se avessimo sbucciato lo strato superiore d’Italia per goderci proprio una parte della vita italiana, le tradizione il cibo e la gente.
These weeks of immersion in the language and culture of the Basilicata and of Puglia have gone very well. I am at home in the south, thanks to all my partners. I especially want to thank my friends Ilaria Navarra (Matera) and Ylenia Sambati (Puglia). These women are fantastic. I thank you both from the bottom of my heart for your super special collaboration. One can easily see that these women love their regional areas and Italy in general. It was our desire and our vision to create a special vacation for those in love with the language. We wanted to create an experience…as if we had pulled back a layer of Italy in order to enjoy a real cross-section of Italian life, the traditions, the food, and the people.
Grazie ai viaggiatori che hanno deciso di venire con me su questa matta vacanza!! Siete tutte donne graziose e ciascuno di voi ha una storia bellissima e una passione intensa per l’italia.
Thanks to the travelers who decided to come away with me on this matta vacanza. You are all lovely women, each with a wonderful story to tell and a strong love for Italy.

Nella Puglia ci sono tanti amici che hanno reso indimenticabile il nostro soggiorno nel Salento! Oltre alla bella Ylena Sambati di YLTour, voglio ringraziare il mio amico Michele anche un socio di YLTour, che era con noi ogni giorno. Abilmente ci ha assistito e ogni sera ci siamo divertiti un sacco con lui intorno a una tavola strapiena di cibo. Abbiamo parlato di tante cose e abbiamo riso molto. “We love too much” quest’uomo!! Sei grande Michele!
In Puglia, there are so many people who helped to make our stay in the Salento special. In addition to Ylena Sambati of YLTour, I want to thank my friend Michele a partner of YLTOUR who was with us every day. With ease, he organized our excursions. He was always with us and we all enjoyed ourselves around the dinner table every night. We talked about many things and laughed a lot! “We love too much” this man!! You are wonderful Michele!
Anche voglio ringraziare le nostre guide della storia dell’arte…Angela Beccarisi – a Lecce, Galatina e Otranto (è sempre un piacere stare nella sua compagnia!), e la bella Samantha – a Locorotondo, Ostuni e Alberobello.

Thanks to all the folks at azienda agricolo Taurino where we tasted olive oil. So much fun to spend time with you all! Thanks also to Giuseppe Simone our yoga teacher and also Cristian Mogavero of Andrea Viaggi. Every morning he always had a wonderful smile for us.
Voglio anche parlare di Mamma Giuglia alla masseria che ci ha insegnato come di preparare ricette del Salento e che ha preparato tanti piatti speciali per noi e Marta di agriturismo da Marta (una donna fantastica che ho deciso d’adottare come nonna).
I also want to give a special mention to Mamma Giuglia at the masseria who taught is how to cook Salento style and who prepared so many special dishes for us and Marta di agriturismo Marta (a special woman who I have decided to adopt as my grandmother).
Non posso dimenticare Paola e la piccola Marta del Palazzo Castromediano a Lecce e il loro cucciolo (che io quasi quasi volevo mettere nella valigia per portare a casa). Loro ci hanno accolto in un modo molto caloroso i primi giorni a Lecce.
I also can’t forget Paola and dear little Marta of Palazzo Catromediano in Lecce e there little puppy (that I almost wanted to put in my suitcase to bring home). They warmly welcomed us to Lecce during the first days of our stay.
Finalmente voglio ringraziare la nostra bell’insegnante Roberta Rollo con i riccioli straordinari che ci ha aiutato con la lingua ogni giorno e che ha fatto lezioni molto creative. Grazie cara! è stato un grande piacere conoscerti e anche conoscere i tuoi genitori l’ultimo giorno! Non canterò mai “Il sapore di sale” senza pensare a te! (Ci sentiamo!!)
Finally, last but not least, I want to thank our teacher Roberta Rollo the girl with the spectacular curls, who helped us with the language every day with very creative lessons. Thanks sweet girl! it was a pleasure getting to know you and your parents the last day! I will never again sing “Il sapore di sale” with out thinking of you. (we will stay in touch!)
Allora cari amici, mi stanno chiamando alla tavola per pranzo! Devo scappare! Tra poco usciranno tutte le storie e i racconti bellissimi di questo viaggio e questa bella matta vacanza in Italia! So, dear friends, they are calling me to lunch! I must take my leave. Before too long, all the stories of this crazy wonderful Italian vacation will spill out.
