Learning a foreign language is like a painting by Leonard da Vinci

Alcune persone pensano che si può imparare una lingua in un breve periodo, diciamo quattro o sei settimane. Ma dai! Si può davvero imparare una lingua in un breve lasso di tempo? Si può davvero conoscere e apprezzare le sfumature di una lingua straniera che è forzata nel cervello in fretta? E in realtà, chi vorrebbe fare così? Dove si trova la gioia in tutto quello?

Some people think that a language can be learned in a short amount of time, say four to six weeks. But really! Can you really learn a language in such a short amount of time? Can you really know and fully appreciate and retain all the nuances of a foreign language that is crammed rapidly into your brain? And actually, why would you want to? Where is the joy in that?

Secondo me l’apprendimento di una lingua è come un dipinto di Leonardo da Vinci. Quando Leonard ha dipinto i suoi quadri ha trascorso ore e ore a creare strati luminescenti di vernici ad olio. Ha continuato a costruire strati traslucidi in modo che la luce scende nella pittura e poi riflette fuori in un modo che la pittura sembra di brillare di ricchi calore e luce. Per me l’apprendimento di una lingua è molto simile. Ci vogliono più di quindici minuti al giorno per acquisire una “tela” di lingua riccamente stratificato di parole e modi di dire, i tempi grammaticali e di sintassi. Si deve anche dare abbastanza tempo per metabolizzare le parole e le frasi e lasciare che la lingua entra nel vostro essere. Questo ci vuole tempo e non dovrebbe fatto in fretta.

To me, language learning is like a Leonardo da Vinci painting. When Leonardo created his paintings he spent hours and hours creating luminescent layers of oil varnishes. He continued to build up these translucent layers so that the light goes down into the painting and then reflects back up so that the painting seems to glow with rich warmth and light. To me, language learning is much like this. It requires more than fifteen minutes a day of practice to acquire a richly layered language “canvas” of words and idioms, grammatical tenses, and syntax. You also have to give yourself enough time to metabolize words and phrases and let the language steep into your being. This takes time and shouldn’t be done in haste. 

È come stiate creando un calderone ribollente di zuppa di “linguaggio” che richiede la giusta quantità di condimento e la miscelazione, in modo da essere pronto per essere consumato. A volte ci vuole una settimana o forse sei mesi o forse un’anno (o due) prima che si ritiene di aver fatto “amicizia” con una parola o una frase. Però col tempo, avrete momenti “illuminanti” e espressioni e parole smettono di essere alieni e  invece siete in grado di apprezzare e capire bene le sfumature. È il momento quando si sentite che siete comodi vecchi amici e anche quando ti senti davvero il padrone.

It is as if you are creating a simmering cauldron of language stew that requires just the right amount of seasoning and blending in order to be consumed. Sometimes it takes a week or maybe six months or maybe even a year (or two) before you feel you have made friends with a word or a phrase. But with time, you will experience “a-ha” moments and language expressions and words will stop being so alien and you can appreciate and really understand language nuances. It is then that you feel that you are comfortable old friends with the language and also when you feel you really own it.

Quindi rilassatevi. A volte ci vuole tempo per diventare amici con un linguaggio! Lasciatevi cogliere il significato della lingua e non sentirvi in fretta. Imparare una lingua non è una maratona di essere vinto in un rapido sprint verso il traguardo. Invece potete prendere tutto il tempo necessario per creare il vostro proprio capolavoro luminescente.

So relax. Sometimes it takes time to become friends with a language! Let yourself grasp the meaning of the language and don’t feel like you have to be in a rush to learn it. Learning a language isn’t a marathon to be won in a mad dash sprint to the finish line. Rather take time to create your own luminescent masterpiece.
