Mediterraneo – film by Italian director Gabriele Salvatores: Escape reality

Il film, girato nel 1991, ha vinto il premio Oscar per il miglior film straniero. È l’ultimo film di una trilogia che tratta della fuga, che includono Marrakech Express (1989) e da Turné (1990).

Are you looking for a good movie to watch? I have a suggestion for you. Have you seen the movie “Mediterraneo” directed by Gabriele Salvatores? The movie, filmed in 1991, won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. It is the last film in a trilogy with themes of escape, which includes Marrakech Express (1989) and Turné (1990).

Il film è dedicato a tutti coloro che fuggono. Il messaggio dal regista: in tempi come questi la fuga è l’unico mezzo per mantenersi vivi e continuare a sognare… o magari fuggendo, si trova la vera strada del ritorno. Salvatores riesce a fare un film divertentissimo, unendo comicità, intelligenza e in alcuni casi drammaticità. Tra gli attori più conosciuti spuntano Diego Abatantuono, Claudio Bisio, Claudio Bigagli ed Ugo Conti. Il film, pur essendo ambientato durante la Seconda Guerra, è un messaggio di nonviolenza. Gli uomini, come se fossero stati abbandonati sulla Luna, lontano dal civiltà, sono costretti a prendere una pausa dal “mondo reale” . Senza il bagaglio della loro vita personale e le storie…sono costretti a riflettere sulle cose importanti della vita, e scoprono le loro vere identità.

The film is dedicated to all those who are running away. The message from the director: in times likes these escaping is the only way to hold on and keep the dream alive. Or, perhaps running away is the only true way to find your way home again. Salvatore manages to make a movie that is entertaining, combining humor, intelligence, and a touch of drama. The cast includes many well-known actors, including Diego Abatantuono, Claudio Bisio, Claudio Bigagli ed Ugo Conti. The film, despite being set during the Second World War, is a message of nonviolence. The men, as if they have been abandoned on the moon, a long way away from civilization, are forced to take a break from the “real world” . Without the baggage of their personal lives and histories and dramas… they are forced to reflect on the important things in life thus, discovering their true identities.

Nel 1941, un anno dopo l’unione dell’Italia con la Germania contro gli Alleati nella seconda guerra mondiale, un piccolo gruppo di soldati italiani disadattati viene inviato in una piccola isola greca nel Mar Egeo per quattro mesi per controllare la zona. Il loro compito è di occupare l’isola e di segnalare eventuali avvistamenti. Ma una volta sbarcati non trovano nessuno, ad eccezione di una popolazione pacifica – i pochi greci che vivono sull’isola.

Il film cattura il sapore d’Italia, dei suoi stereotipi e delle sue contraddizioni. I soldati sono un tenente che ama l’arte, un sergente macho, un contadino accompagnato dal suo amato asino Silvana e altre persone eccentriche. Non sono bravi soldati, ma rappresentano uomini tipici e indipendenti.

In 1941, one year after Italy joined Germany against the Allies in World War II, a small group of misfit Italian soldiers is sent to a small deserted Greek island in the Aegean Sea for four months of lookout duty. Their assignment is to occupy the island and report any sightings. But once disembarked they don’t find anyone, except a peaceful population – the few Greeks who have remained on the island.

The film captures the “flavor” of Italy, its stereotypes, and its contradictions. The soldiers include a lieutenant who likes art, a macho sergeant, a farmer accompanied by his beloved donkey Silvana, and other quirky people. They are not very good soldiers, but a cross-section of average, independent men.

All’inizio, l’isola greca sembra deserta, ma quando gli abitanti capiscono che i soldati italiani sono innocui, vengono fuori dai loro nascondigli in montagna e continuano le loro vite pacifiche.  Pian piano i soldati scoprono che essere lasciati in un’isola greca dimenticata da Dio, non è una cosa negativa…

At first, the Greek island appears deserted, but when the inhabitants understand that the Italian soldiers are harmless, they come out of their hiding places in the mountains and continue their peaceful lives. Soon the soldiers discover that being left behind in a God-forgotten Greek island isn’t such a bad thing…
