How to use the Italian word Ne, Nè, Né, Ne—YouTube Video

Oggi voglio parlarvi di una parola interessante – ma è una piccola parola – la parola è “ne”…or “nè”… o “né?”?????? Cosa! Che vuol dire questa parola e come si usa…con l’accento o senza?

Today I want to talk about an interesting Italian word – it’s very small – the word “ne” or “nè” o “né”???? Wait a minute! What does this word mean and how do you use it…with the accent or without?

A volte si vede la parola scritta con un piccolo accento, a volte no. Sono qui per aiutarvi a capire come si usa questa piccolissima parola – solo due lettere – che può effettivamente essere molto significativa in una frase e vi aiuta a parlare di più come un madrelingua.

Sometimes you see it written with a little accent, sometimes not. I’m here to help you understand how to use this little word – only two letters – that can actually be quite powerful in a sentence AND help you sound more like a native speaker.

Partiamo prima con la versione accentata di Ne.

Let’s start first with the accented version of ne.

Prima di tutto è importante sapere che non bisogna MAI scrivere “NÈ”, cioè con l’accento grave! Semplicemente non esiste e non è corretto!

First off it is important to know that you never use the word “NÈ” with an accent that swings to the left  – you call that accent grave. It simply doesn’t exist and is WRONG! WRONG!

Bene, ritirerò quello che ho appena detto, non si usa “NÈ” con l’accento grave a meno che non si stia cercando di replicare il suono di un asino quando raglia come nella canzone “Nella Vecchia Fattoria”. A quanto pare gli asini in questa canzone fanno nè-nè nè-nè!

Well, I take that back, you don’t use that form of Nè with an “accento grave” unless you are trying to replicate the sound a small donkey makes when it is braying as in the song “Old McDonald’s farm”. Apparently, donkeys in that song go nè-nè nè-nè

Tra le casse e i ferri rotti ia-ia-o
Dove i topi son grassotti ia-ia-o
C’è un bel gatto-gatto-ga-ga-gatto
L’asinel-nel-nè-nè-nel
C’è la capra-capra-ca-ca-capra
Nella vecchia fattoria ia-ia-o.

Ma sto divagando…torno alla lezione di grammatica: Con la versione accentata del “né”  è necessario utilizzare il accento acuto. L’accento si appoggia a destra. Così NÉ

But I digress…Back to the grammar lesson: With the accented version of “né” you MUST use the acute accent. The accent mark leans to the right.

Si usa il “Né” accentato, solamente nelle frasi in cui esso assume un’accezione di negazione. In particolare in questo contesto né svolge il ruolo grammaticale di congiunzione copulativa e ha il significato di “e nemmeno”, e “non”.

We use the “Né” with the acute accent only in sentences in which it takes on a meaning of negation. In particular, in this context “NÉ” performs the role of connecting conjunction and has the meaning of “and even”, and “not”.

Ecco alcuni esempi / Here are a couple of examples:

Non interessa né a te né a me / It isn’t interesting neither to me nor to you.

Non voglio vedere Andrea né Giovanni / I don’t want to see Andrew nor John

Stasera non voglio mangiare la pizza né la carne / Tonight I don’t want to eat piazza nor meat.

Allora adesso parliamo di “NE” senza l’accento.

So now let’s talk about “NE” without the accent

Il “Ne” senza accento ricopre diversi ruoli e assume diversi significati. “Ne” può agire come un pronome nel senso che può prendere il posto di un sostantivo in modo da non dover ripetere le parole che hai appena usato.

The “Ne” without an accent has a couple of different meanings. “Ne” can act as a pronoun in that it can take the place of a noun so you don’t have to repeat the words you just used.

Come in questi esempio.

Quanti fratelli hai? Ne ho sette. / How many siblings do you have? I have seven of them.

NE replaces “fratelli” again, shorter and quicker

or

NE sostituisce un sostantivo o frase preceduta da “di” o “da”:

NE replaces a noun or sentence preceded by “di” or “da”:

Come in questi esempio.

Parli di politica con i tuoi amici? Certo, ne parliamo spesso. / Do you talk about politics with your friends? Certainly, we talk about it a lot.

Hai paura dei lupi? No, non ne ho paura. / Are you afraid of wolves? No, I’m not afraid of them.

In oltre NE è utilizzato in diverse espressioni idiomatiche: andarsene (to go away, leave), ritornarsene (to return), starsene (to stay). Ne in questo caso è un avverbio di luogo: in questo caso sostituisce le locuzioni “da lì”, “da là”.

Also NE is used in several idiomatic expressions: Ne is used as an adverb and in this case replaces the expression “from there” or “from here”

Come in questo esempi:

Ho capito, ho capito, me ne vado subito e vi lascio in pace. / I understand, I understand, I’ll go away and leave you all in peace.

Vattene!  Non voglio vederti mai più. / Go away! I don’t want to see you again!

Io invece me ne ritorno in Italia appena possibile. / I, on the other hand, will go back there to Italy as soon as I can.

Finalmente NE sostituisce un oggetto diretto accompagnato da un numero o un aggettivo di quantità.

NE replaces a direct object accompanied by a number or an adjective of quantity.

Come in questo esempi:

Quanti corsi segui questo semestre? Ne seguo cinque, sono troppi, aiuto!!! / How many courses are you taking this semester? I’m taking five of them, that’s a lot, help!

Quanti libri hai comprato? Ne ho comprati moltissimi, ho speso un sacco di soldi. / How many books did you buy? I bought a lot of them, I spent a lot of money.

Dai! Su! Per capire bene come usare la parola NE ascoltate gli italiani. Ecco alcune espressioni che ho sentito recentemente guardando un film italiano. È una buona pratica per sintonizzare il vostro orecchio alla parola NE. Imparate a fare la frase più breve usando la parola NE per parlare come un madrelingua.

But wait! To understand how to use the word NE listen to the Italians. Here are some great expressions that I heard recently watching an Italian movie. It is great practice to tune your ear to the word NE. Learn how to shorthand your sentences using the word NE to sound like a native speaker.

Ecco le espressioni che ho sentito

Me ne occupo io / I will take care of it

Per quanto me ne so io / For what I know about it

Pero ne parliamo dopo / However we will talk about it later

Come dimenticarsene? / How can it be forgotten about?

Che ne pensi / What do you think about it?

Ne vedrei altre / I would see others

Non mi va parlarne / I don’t want to talk about it

Allora avete capito il significato tra “né” con l’accento and “ne” senza l’accento? Imparate la differenza. Ricordate che non si utilizza mai NE con l’accento grave… a meno che non volete suonare come un asino!
