Ho desiderato a lungo leggere “Io no ho paura” di Niccolò Ammaniti. Ho comprato il libro e il film, di Gabriele Salvatores, un anno fa, mentre ero a Lucca. Entrambe le versioni si trovavano sulla mia scrivania a fianco del mio computer, invitandomi a scoprire la storia. Sapevo solo un po’ della trama, e confesso di essere stata un po’ cauto sul fatto che si sarebbe rivelato spaventoso e inquietante. Poi il mese scorso, ho deciso che era il momento di smettere di avere paura. L’ho preso e ho cominciato a leggere. Ho scoperto che non potevo metterlo giù. Poi ho visto il film.
I have meant to read “Io no ho Paura” by Niccolò Ammaniti for some time now. I bought the book and the movie, made by Gabriele Salvatores, a year ago when I was in Lucca. Both versions have been sitting on my desk next to my computer, beckoning me to discover the story. I knew just a little bit about the plot, and I confess I was a little leery that it would turn out to be scary and creepy. Then last month, I decided it was time to stop being afraid. I picked up the book and started reading. I found I couldn’t put it down. When I finished it, I then watched the movie.
Non mi aspettavo che la storia mi commuovesse così tanto. Il film è stato anche molto forte e un adattamento bello e fedele del libro. Il film coglie anche poeticamente le dolci colline di frumento dell’Italia meridionale in Lucania. Cristallizza quel momento magico in cui una terra piena di giochi infantili e la logica dell’innocenza vacilla ai margini di un mondo adulto, talvolta instabile e difficilmente comprensibile. In questo senso, mi ricorda “To Kill a Mockingbird” di Harper Lee.
I didn’t expect the story to move me so much. The movie, too, was quite powerful and a beautiful and faithful adaptation of the book. Moreover, the film poetically captures the rolling hills of grain in southern Italy in the Lucania. It crystallizes that magical moment when a land filled with childish games and the logic of innocence teeters on the brink of an adult world, sometimes unstable and challenging to comprehend. In this regard, it reminds me of “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.
Il film inizia serenamente. Si svolge in una scintillante estate nel remoto paese di Acqua Traverse nel 1978. Una piccola banda di bambini vaga per i campi dorati di grano, cercando di alleviare la loro noia andando in bicicletta, sfidando l’un l’altro a sfide ridicole ed esplorando una casa abbandonata. The film begins serenely. It is set during a sizzling summer in the remote village of Acqua Traverse in 1978. A small band of children roams the golden fields of grain, trying to alleviate their boredom by riding their bikes, challenging each other to ridiculous dares. One afternoon, one of these kids, Michele, discovers a secret. Exploring an abandoned house on a desolate hill, he lifts up a piece of metal that covers an underground shaft and finds a small boy hidden below, chained and shivering in the dark.
Michele è terrorizzato dalla sua scoperta. Sbatte giù la copertina e scappa. Ma la curiosità prevale su di lui, e il ragazzo spaventato ritorna. Mantiene il suo segreto, visitando quel ragazzo pallido e emaciato che non riesce nemmeno ad aprire gli occhi perché è stato tenuto all’oscuro per così tanto tempo. Michele porta al ragazzo cibo e acqua e alla fine lo fa amicizia. Scopre che il bambino è vittima di un brutale rapimento ed è tenuto in ostaggio da diverse settimane.
Michele is terrified by his discovery. He slams down the cover and runs away. But curiosity gets the better of him, and the terrified boy returns. He keeps his secret, visiting the pale, emaciated boy who can’t even open his eyes because he has been kept in the dark for so long. Michele brings the boy food and water and eventually befriends him. He learns that the boy is the victim of a brutal kidnapping and has been held hostage for several weeks.
Michele decide di chiedere consiglio ai suoi genitori. Ma, dopo aver ascoltato le conversazioni degli adulti e scoperto le pentole di sua madre vicino alla grotta sotterranea, si rende conto che i suoi genitori sono coinvolti nel complotto di rapimento..
Michele decides to seek advice from his parents. But, after overhearing adult conversations and discovering his mother’s cookware near the underground cave, he realizes his parents are involved in the kidnapping plot.
Non ho paura è ambientato negli anni ’70 durante un terribile periodo di turbolenza in Italia conosciuto come anni di piombo. Durante questo periodo, il diffuso conflitto sociale portò al terrorismo, all’omicidio e all’esplosione di bombe. È fondamentale conoscerlo, perché è parte integrante della trama. Fornisce una certa comprensione della disperazione e del rafforzamento che alimenta le motivazioni degli adulti nella storia. Gli autori possono giustificare i furti ai ricchi per migliorare la propria situazione. Così possono rapire e tenere un bambino in un buco buio e poi tornare a casa per baciare i loro figli.
Io no ho Paura is set in the ’70s during a terrible time of unrest in Italy known as the Anni di Piombo—the years of lead. During this time, the widespread social conflict led to terrorism, assassinations, and bombings. It is essential to know this, as it is integral to the storyline. It gives some understanding of the desperation and the empowerment that fuels the adults’ motivation in the story. The perpetrators can justify stealing from the rich to better their circumstances. Thus, they can cold-heartedly kidnap and keep a small child in the dark hole and then return home to kiss their own children.
Non appena ci rendiamo conto che i genitori di Michele partecipano al rapimento dell’amico, cominciamo a chiederci perché Michele non reagisca immediatamente e faccia il salvatore, cercando aiuto da altre fonti. Invece passano delle settimane e non vuole dirlo a nessuno. A un certo punto, Michele aiuta il piccolo ragazzo a fuggire per qualche ora, e insieme giocano nei campi di grano. Alla fine della giornata, però, restituisce il ragazzo alla sua prigione.
As we become aware that Michele’s parents are participants in his friend’s kidnapping, we begin to wonder why Michele doesn’t immediately react and play the savior, seeking help from other sources. Instead, weeks go by, and he tells no one. At one point, Michele helps the small boy escape for a few hours, and together they play in grain fields. At the end of the day, however, he returns the boy to his prison.
Dobbiamo capire che questa non è una storia su un supereroe in miniatura, un bambino che si comporta come un mini adulto. Al contrario, questa è la storia di un ragazzo che non è ancora pronto a fidarsi delle proprie decisioni. È immaturo e ha bisogno di tempo per concentrarsi sul bene e sul male. Alla fine del film, però, Michele va oltre la linea dell’innocenza infantile e si confronta con le dure realtà di un mondo adulto.
We must realize this is not a tale about a miniature superhero, a child acting as a mini adult. Instead, this is the story of a little boy who is not yet ready to trust his decisions. He is immature, and it takes time for his sense of right and wrong to come into focus. By the film’s end, however, Michele crosses the line from childhood innocence and confronts the harsh realities of an adult world.
Stranamente, in questo caso, le cose che inizialmente sembrano spaventose, attraverso la comprensione e la de-mistificazione, risultano meno terrificanti. D’altro canto, le cose ritenute sicure e affidabili sono le cose reali di cui aver paura.
Oddly, in this instance, the things that seem scary at first, through comprehension and de-mystification, turn out to be less terrifying. On the other hand, the things thought to be safe and reliable are the real things to fear.
I also enjoyed both the book and film very much (the book first). And I would also like to add for those who have been studying Italian for a while and have reached an upper-intermediate level (such as B2 in the European language system) to NON AVERE PAURA of this book as it isn’t difficult to read. This was amongst my first full-length novels in Italian and I found that it flowed quite well. Thank you for the review and reminding me of this excellent book.
