Daddy Long Legs Fred Astaire – Papà Gambalunga in Italiano

Ieri sera ho visto “Papà Gambalunga” un film americano in lingua italiana. La storia di “Papà Gambalunga” era originariamente un libro di Jean Webster e poi è stata trasformata in un film. La prima ad interpretare il film è stata Mary Pickford e poi ci sono state altre versioni successive con protagonisti come Janet Gaynor e Shirley Temple. Una versione musicale è stata girata negli anni cinquanta interpretata da Fred Astaire e Leslie Caron. Quando ho visto una copia del DVD del film in un’edicola sull’isola della Giudecca a Venezia l’anno scorso ho subito pensato che dovevo comprarlo, perché era proprio quello che ho sempre amato: il disinvolto Fred Astaire e i suoi passi di danza creativi. Caron, nota anche per il suo ruolo in “Un American in Paris” è una perfetta compagna di danza all’elegante Astaire. Le sue gambe formose si adeguano perfettamente alle gambe di Astaire lunghe come un ramo.

Last night I watched “Daddy Long Legs” an American film, in Italian. The story of Daddy Long Legs was originally a book by Jean Webster that was turned into a film. The first film actress to interpret the film was Mary Pickford and later there were other versions featuring leading ladies like Janet Gaynor and Shirley Temple. A musical version was filmed in the 1950s starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron. When I saw a copy of the DVD of this movie in a newsstand on Giudecca island in Venice last year I just knew I had to pick it up because after all, I have always loved the debonair Fred Astaire and his classic dance moves. Caron, also known for her role in An American in Paris, provides a prefect dance partner to the elegant Astair. Her shapely gams perfectly compliment his extremely long limbs.

La storia di “Papà Gambalunga” è un po’ difficile da digerire, è piuttosto datata e non regge bene…cioè un bel vecchio uomo ricco, salva una povera adolescente orfana, la educa, acquista per lei preziosi abiti, la seduce e poi la sposa…e poi balla allegramente fino al tramonto con lei. Mentre la storia è fondamentalmente innocente e dolce, non regge né risponde alle esigenze delle donne di oggi, che preferiscono temi di film che coinvolgono forti donne indipendenti che si tirano su dai lacci degli stivali****, o in questo caso le loro scarpe da ballerina con la punta. Ma, se si poteste solo andare oltre l’improbabile (e fare una curvatura spazio temporale per ritornare a un tempo pre-Betty Friedan) potreste essere in grado di godervi questo film perché la danza è molto bella da guardare. (***Attenzione italiani: questa è un’espressione americana che non ha senso in italiano. Deriva dalla frontiera americana “old west” e la convinzione che un pioniere americano deve essere indipendente e fare il proprio successo dal lavoro delle proprie mani, con i suoi stivali e strumenti semplici.)

The story of Daddy Long Legs, however, is a little hard to swallow and in my opinion, is rather dated …i.e. handsome older rich man, saves poor teenage orphan girl, educates her, buys her lovely gowns, seduces and then marries her… and then dances happily off into the sunset with her. While the story is basically innocent and sweet, it doesn’t hold up to today’s modern woman’s standards which prefer movie themes that involve strong independent women who pull themselves up by their own bootstraps*** – or in this case ballerina toe shoes. But, if you can just suspend your disbelief and time warp yourself back to a pre-Betty Friedan time period, you just might be able to enjoy this film because the dancing is quite lovely to watch. (***Attention Italian readers: this is an American expression that makes no sense in Italian. It comes from the American west and the conviction that an American pioneer must be independent and make his own fortune by the means of his own hands, with his own boots and simple instruments).

Come Astaire era incline a fare, ha adattato la sua coreografia ai particolari punti di forza della sua compagna di danza e in questo caso il balletto era il punto di forza particolare di Caron. Secondo i ricordi della sua amica Audrey Hepburn, il film era uno dei preferiti di Astaire, in gran parte perché la trama affronta le complicazioni di una storia d’amore tra una giovane donna e un uomo trenta anni più anziano di lei. Tuttavia, la produzione del film è stato segnato dalla morte della moglie per cancro. Profondamente traumatizzato, Astaire ha offerto di pagare le spese di produzione già sostenute per abbandonare il progetto, ma poi ha cambiato idea. 

As Astaire was prone to adapt his choreography to the particular strengths of his partner, and in this case, the ballet was Caron’s particular dancing strength. According to memories of Audrey Hepburn, the film was one of Astaire’s personal favorites, largely due to the script which, addresses the complications in a love affair between a young woman and a man thirty years her senior. However, making the film was marred by his wife’s death from lung cancer. Deeply traumatized, Astaire offered to pay the production expenses already incurred in order to quit the project, but then changed his mind. 

Se non conoscete il termine “Papà Gambalunga” si riferisce a un tipo di ragno innocuo americano (Daddy Long Legs) che ha il corpo più piccolo e le gambe più lunghe. Nel film alla bella ragazza orfana Julie non è permesso conoscere il nome del suo benefattore – sai, quello che compra i suoi vestiti costosi, la manda al college e alla fine la trasforma in una milionaria. Una notte, però la ragazza vede l’ombra dell’uomo che è proiettato sul muro dell’orfanotrofio e per un trucco di luce le sue gambe sembrano estremamente esagerate, così è nato il sopranome per il suo santo protettore e il suo biglietto per uscire fuori dall’orfanotrofio.

If you are unfamiliar with the term “Daddy Long Legs” it refers to a type of harmless American spider that has the tiniest of bodies and the longest of legs. In the film the beautiful orphaned girl Julie is not allowed to know the name of her benefactor – you know the one who buys her expensive clothes, sends her to college, and eventually turns her into a millionaire. One night, however, she sees a shadow of the man who is her protectorate cast upon the wall of the orphanage, and due to a trick of light his legs seem extremely exaggerated and gangly, thus is born her nickname for her patron, savior, and a one-way ticket out of the orphanage.
