È quel periodo dell’anno per tirare fuori le scatole piene di statuette dall’armadio per impostare il presepe ancora. Lo scorso sabato ho fatto proprio questo.
It’s that time of year to pull the box of nativity figures out of the closet and set up the presepe again. Last Saturday I did just that.
Che piacere aprire la scatola ed estrarre gli oggetti familiari per arrangiarli in una scena ben conosciuta. Metto l’angelo accanto a una “stella” incandescente sulla cima di una collina costruita di cartone e carta stampata.
What a treat to unpack the boxes and pull out the familiar items and arrange them in a well-known scene. I place the angel next to a glowing “star” on top of a hill that I construct out of cardboard boxes and printed paper.
La sacra famiglia io metto in un posto umile—un piccolo burrone tra le colline. Maria e Giuseppe e Gesù condividono le loro modeste sistemazioni con animali da cortile, un gregge di pecore e una mucca. In lontananza si può vedere gli abitanti del villaggio e i pastori dei campi che arrivano per rendere omaggio al neonato.
The holy family is placed in a little ravine in a humble setting. They share their modest accommodations with barnyard animals, a flock of sheep, and a cow. In the distance can be seen the villagers and the shepherds of the fields who arrive to pay their respects to the newborn baby.
Sebbene tradizionalmente i Re Magi non arrivano fino al’Epifania, oggi li aggiungo per effetto. Loro si inchinano e adorano il bambino che hanno cercato seguendo la stella nel cielo notturno.
Although traditionally the wise men don’t arrive until Epiphany, today I add them for effect. They bow and worship the child they have been searching for following the star in the night sky.
Ogni anno la scena è quasi uguale, ma ci sono sempre alcune modifiche e le statuette sono posizionate in modo leggermente diverso al rispetto all’una dall’altra. Ma la tradizione continua—quello di creare una scena in cui le persone sono piene dello spirito del Natale e della gioia di dare. Per me è un modo bello per ricordare la vera ragione per cui festeggiamo Natale.
Each year the scene is the same, but there are always a few modifications, and figures are placed slightly differently in respect to one another. But, the tradition continues…that of creating a scene where people are filled with the spirit of Christmas and the joy of giving. For me, it is a welcome reminder of why we celebrate Christmas.
