Sono così contenta di collaborare con Silvia e tutti gli insegnanti della scuola “Il Sasso” a Montepulciano il prossimo giugno. Montepulciano è un piccolo Paese, ma ha un cuore GRANDE e ha molto da offrirci. Non vedo l’ora di renderla “la mia città” e “abbracciarla” e come le persone che vivono lì.
I am so pleased to be working with Silvia and all the teachers at Il Sasso language school in Montepulciano this coming June. Montepulciano is a small town, but it has a BIG heart and has so much to offer. I can’t wait to make it “my city” and I look forward to embracing it and the people who live there.
Ho invitato Silvia a parlare un pò di più su Montepulciano e sulle cose che la rendono così speciali. Dopo aver letto le parole di Silvia capirete, specialmente tutti quelli che si uniranno a noi a giugno, che abbiamo qualcosa molto speciale davanti a noi. Il nostro soggiorno sarà piuttosto gratificante…e sì, piuttosto magico! Preparatevi ad innamorarvi di Montepulciano!
I invited Silvia to talk a little about Montepulciano and what makes it so very special. After reading Silvia’s words, you will understand, especially all those who are joining us in June, that we have something very special ahead of us. Our stay will be quite rewarding…and yes, quite magical! Get ready to fall in love with Montepulciano!
Ecco Silvia…nelle sue parole
Tanti anni fa, quando sono arrivata qui da Firenze, non avrei immaginato che Montepulciano sarebbe diventata la mia città.
Many years ago, when I arrived here from Florence, I would never have imagined that Montepulciano would become my city.
E invece, da più di 25 anni abito in questo luogo speciale. Il luogo in cui, insieme ai miei colleghi, accolgo, anno dopo anno, i tanti studenti che da ogni parte del mondo vengono qui per imparare l’italiano nella mia scuola, Il Sasso.
And instead, for more than 25 years I have lived in this special place. It is a place in which, together with my colleagues, I embrace, year after year, the many students, from every part of the world who come here to learn Italian in my school, Il Sasso.
Perché Montepulciano? mi chiederete. Perché Montepulciano e non Roma, Milano, Firenze? Sono città che amo moltissimo, badate bene. A Firenze ho studiato all’Università e lì ho vissuto anni bellissimi. Ma le grandi città sono in qualche modo delle eccezioni. L’Italia vera è quella dei paesini e delle campagne. E’ lì che nasce la nostra cultura. Ed è nei piccoli centri che questa cultura oggi viene preservata.
Why Montepulciano? You all ask me. Why Montepulciano and not Rome, Milan, or Florence? They are cities that I love very much and care for. In Florence, I studied at the university and there I lived many great years. But the big cities are in some ways an exception. The real Italy is that which can be found in smaller towns in the country. It is there that our culture was born. It is in the small centers that the culture today is preserved.
Montepulciano è uno di questi piccoli centri. Ha solo 14mila abitanti, e di questi solo 4000 vivono nel centro storico. Tuttavia, è una città così ricca di arte e di storia da avere una reputazione pari a quella dei centri maggiori. Senza gli svantaggi che derivano dalle grandi dimensioni. Non ci sono le grandi catene di fast food che hanno ormai colonizzato il mondo, non ci sono le orde di turisti “mordi e fuggi” né i ristoranti con il menu turistico a prezzo fisso. Ci sono bar, ristoranti, negozi a misura d’uomo, dove i locali godono realmente del piacere di chiacchierare con i viaggiatori in un inglese che dopo poche frasi non può che cedere il posto all’italiano.
Montepulciano is one of these small centers. It has only 14 thousand inhabitants, and 4000 of them live in the historic city center. Yet, it is a city so rich in art and history to have a reputation that equals that of larger centers. Without the disadvantages that come from huge city centers. There are no big fast-food chains that by now have taken over the world, there are no hordes of “hit and run” tourists, nor are there restaurants with fixed tourist menus. There are bars, restaurants, and shops on a manageable human scale, where the locals really enjoy chatting with visitors in English that after a few phrases can give way to Italian.
Se state leggendo questo blog sapete bene che una lingua non è viva se non è legata a persone, culture, tradizioni. Per questo imparare l’italiano a Montepulciano è prima di tutto un’esperienza. Perché parlare con un insegnante, anche se è un bravissimo insegnante, non può essere l’unica esperienza di lingua in un paese straniero. L’esperienza si fa fuori dalla scuola di lingue, si fa parlando con le persone, utilizzando le mani e il sorriso tanto quanto le strutture grammaticali.
If you are reading this blog you all know very well that a language is fully enjoyed or lived if it isn’t tied to people, culture, and traditions. For this reason, learning Italian in Montepulciano is first and foremost an experience. Because speaking with a teacher, even if you are a wonderful teacher, is not the same unique language experience as experiencing the language you are learning in a foreign country. The experience one has outside of the language school, speaking with people, using your hands, and smiling a lot is just as important as learning grammar rules.
Dove? Tanto per cominciare, al mercato del giovedì mattina, dove si vanno a comprare frutta e verdura, pesce e formaggio, pollo arrosto e porchetta. Qui si incontra la gente, specialmente gli anziani, che hanno tutto il tempo per scegliere, confrontare, chiacchierare. E condividere ricette ed esperienze con il viaggiatore che sappia ascoltare.
Where? To begin with, at the Thursday morning market, where you go to buy fruit and vegetables, fish and cheese, roasted chickens and porchetta. There you meet people, especially the older folks, that have the time to select, compare and chat. And share recipes and experiences with travelers that know how to listen. And then in the wine cellars, where the Vino Nobile of Montepulciano ages in the caves made of ancient stone, care for with love by the vintners. They are the real custodians of wine secrets but are also ready to tell you about the details of how to make the wine that has made Montepulciano world famous.
E poi? Una delle cose che più fanno piacere a coloro che si fermano per 2 o 3 settimane per imparare l’italiano al Sasso è scegliere il “proprio” bar, il “proprio” ristorante, il “proprio” posto speciale. Inutile dire che un posto è speciale grazie alle persone che ci stanno dentro, a chi dopo due giorni conosce il tuo nome, e prepara il tuo cappuccino come lo vuoi tu senza bisogno che tu glielo chieda… Nessuno degli insegnanti o degli studenti del Sasso deve chiedere qualcosa a Silvia e a Alessandro del Caffè di Piazza delle Erbe. Loro sanno già quello che prendi a colazione! E lo stesso vale per Leonardo e Vincenzo del Caffè Poliziano, o per Luca e Christian del Lucevan le Stelle, dove mi basta sedermi in terrazza a guardare il tramonto per ricevere il “mio” aperitivo….
And then? One of the things that those who stay for two or three weeks to learn Italian at il Sasso is to choose “their bar,” “their restaurant,” and “their special place.” Needless to say that a place is special thanks to the people that are inside, that after two days know your name, and prepare your cappuccino as you like without needing to tell them…None of the teachers or the students of Il Sasso have to ask what Silvia or Alessandro at the Caffè di Piazza delle Erbe. They know already what you will have for breakfast! It is the same for Leonardo and Vincenzo of Caffè Poliziano, or for Luca and Christian of Lucevan le Stells, where it is enough to sit down in the terrace to watch the sunset and have “your” drink brought to you.
Ecco, forse proprio questo è il segreto: le dimensioni del piccolo centro permettono a tutti, non solo agli abitanti stabili, ma anche ai visitatori, di godere di relazioni personali che ti fanno sempre sentire “a casa”.
That’s it, perhaps that is the secret; the intimacy of a small center allows this to everyone, not just the ones who live here all year long, but also to the visitors, to enjoy a personal rapport that always makes you feel “at home.”
