Sunflower Italian School Florence – Culture and language go hand in hand

Ciao a tutti! Oggi vorrei parlarvi di Firenze
e di una nuova fantastica scuola, 
recentemente venuta alla mia attenzione.

Il suo nome è Sunflower Florence 
nel centro storico di Firenze.

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Florence a fantastic new school that has recently come to my attention.

It is called Sunflower Florence and you can
find it in the heart of Florence’s historic city center.

Un po’ di tempo fa ho ricevuto una lettera da una donna che si chiama Anna, e che gestisce la scuola con dei suoi colleghi anche amici; così dopo averci scambiato varie lettere ho compreso che la Sunflower è una scuola veramente speciale. In più ho scoperto che con la Sunflower, condivido la stessa filosofia d’apprendimento: difatti, per imparare l’italiano, è necessario concentrarsi non solo sulla grammatica e sul vocabolario quando si è in un’aula, ma bisogna “vivere” la lingua attraverso la cultura e le cose che vi trasportano in Italia. 

A little while ago, I received a letter from Anna, who manages the school along with her colleagues who are also friends. After we exchanged several letters I began to see that Sunflower is a very special school. The more I discovered about Sunflower, I realized that I share a similar language learning philosophy: to learn Italian you don’t just concentrate on grammar and vocabulary in a class room, but instead you “live” the language through culture and through the things that bring you to Italy in the first place!

Per questo motivo ho iniziato i miei viaggi in Italia ovvero per apprendere meglio! Per saperne di più sulla mia filosofia, potete andare a leggere un post che ho scritto per italki: Language and Culture go hand in hand. Adesso Anna spiega più della sua nuova scuola, della sua amore per Firenze e della sua filosofia d’apprendimento. Ecco Anna:

Here now is Anna who explains more about her new school in Florence and the school’s philosophy about learning. Here’s Anna:

Sunflower Florence è la realizzazione di un piccolo grande sogno condiviso da un gruppo di amiche insegnanti di lingua italiana. Alcune di noi sono nate e cresciute a Firenze, le altre invece sono diventate fiorentine d’adozione parecchi anni fa, mentre tutte condividiamo la stessa passione per questa città, per i suoi scorci suggestivi e per l’ispirazione che magicamente riesce a dare, ogni volta, a chi passeggia lungo gli argini del suo fiume, l’Arno, o a chi si sofferma anche solo per un attimo ad osservare la perfezione del suo Duomo, o a respirare quel magico profumo rinascimentale delle vie del centro storico.

Sunflower Florence is the realization of a life-long dream shared by group of friends who are also Italian teachers. Some of us were born and raised in Florence, and others have became Florentine. Regardless of where we were born, we all share the same passion for this city. We can’t get enough of its picturesque views or the magical inspiration it gives us every time we take a walk along the Arno. We feel it when we stop to observe the perfection of the Duomo, or when we breath in the the magical aroma of the Renaissance in the historic city streets.

Questo sogno, diventato realtà, è l’aver aperto una piccola scuola di lingua e cultura italiana nel cuore di Firenze, nella quale ogni giorno da più di un anno condividiamo l’amore per la nostra lingua con persone provenienti da tutte le parti del mondo.

This dream, turned into reality, is a small language and cultural school that we have created in the heart of Florence. Here in our school, every day for more than a year, we have shared the love we feel for our language with people from all over the world.

Quando abbiamo aperto sapevamo esattamente che imparare una seconda lingua non è sempre semplice e che richiede, oltre al tempo, anche tanto impegno e una buona dose di sapersi mettere in gioco, che non è sempre scontato riuscire a reperire in noi stessi. Per questo, forti delle nostre esperienze di insegnamento precedenti, abbiamo escogitato un trucco per distogliere l’attenzione degli studenti dal loro proprio personale percorso linguistico e farli concentrare invece sulle loro passioni più profonde e su ciò che li ha portati in Italia: la musica, il vino, il cibo, l’arte a tutto tondo, la moda o, perfino, il cioccolato. Eravamo certe che se la cultura si fosse fatta strumento per l’apprendimento della lingua italiana e viceversa, tutto sarebbe risultato non solo più semplice, ma soprattutto molto più accattivante e divertente. E così è stato!

When we opened the school we knew precisely that teaching a second language isn’t always easy and requires, not only a lot of time but also quite a lot of effort, as well as a good dose of knowing how to put it all into practice. Sometimes this is difficult for students to do on their own. So, based on our strong past teaching experiences we have devised a learning “trick” or method. We divert students’ attention from simply focusing on their language journey; in addition to the language, we also focus on their deepest passions and the reasons that have brought them to Italy: music, wine, food, art in all its aspects, fashion… perhaps even chocolate! We were certain that if we made Italian culture a tool for learning the Italian language and vice versa, everything would not only be easier, but above all else, it would be more interesting and fun. And so it is!

Ecco allora che l’insegnamento dell’italiano a Sunflower Florence si fonda su un percorso che inizia in classe e si sviluppa per strada, nei musei, al mercato, nelle botteghe artigiane e in tanti altri luoghi più o meno noti della città.

And so, teaching at Sunflower Florence is based on a personal journey that starts in the class room and then moves out into the streets, the museums, markets, craft shops and any where else you want to go… the famous and not so famous places in the city.

Infine volevamo che gli studenti potessero sentirsi accolti e coccolati come in una seconda casa e potessero respirare un po’ di quello spirito italiano, caloroso e sincero, che ci caratterizza. E a questo punto, ad ascoltare o a leggere i messaggi di chi è passato di qui anche solo per qualche giorno o per dei mesi, crediamo davvero di esserci riuscite.

Finally, we wanted our students to feel welcomed, pampered and well taken care of. We want them to feel as if our school is a second home, where they could breath in the warm and sincere Italian spirit that characterizes us. Just listening to the messages and feedback from our students, who have spent just a few days or even a few month, we really believe we are on to something. Our method is working!

Grazie Anna per queste parole! Visto che ho studiato Firenze quando ero una ragazza, la città avrà sempre un posto speciale nel mio cuore. In oltre il mio fiore preferito è il girasole… in tanti modi sembra che siamo anime gemelle! Sarebbe un vero piacere studiare con voi alla Sunflower Florence. Chissà? Thanks, Anna for this post! Because I studied in Florence when I was a girl, the city will always have a special place in my heart. Not only that, my favorite flower is the Sunflower… so it seems that in many ways we are kindred spirits! It would be a real pleasure to study at Sunflower Florence. Who knows?
