Cartapesta or Papermaché is an art form that has been perfected by local artisans in Southern Italy. During a recent trip to Lecce I had the pleasure of spending time in the Studio of Luigi e Maddalena Baldari where they demonstrated for me the ancient technique of creating paper, that was first developed in China and then spread to Italy via the Arabs who crossed the Mediterranean into Italy. Maestro Baldari also showed me how he and his wife, also a master of the craft, create their art of cartapesta rendering the delightful figurines and statues for nativity scenes using the paper that they create, following the traditional antique methods.During the time I spent with the Baldari family, we became friends and il maestro Luigi asked me if I would help him spread the news of his artwork in cartapesta in the United States. I happily agreed and now offer to you Nativity sets created by i Maestri Baldari straight from their bottega in Lecce Italia.
