Da due settimane ormai sono felicemente sistemata nel cuore del centro storico di Arezzo, mettendo a punto gli ultimi dettagli del Programma di Immersione Linguistica Matta, in collaborazione con la scuola Cultura Italiana di Paola Testi. Ora è tutto pronto e sono entusiasta di accogliere gli studenti del programma Matta 2025 — arrivano domani! E una delle prime “creature” che incontreranno (oltre a me, la matta, ovviamente!) appena scesi dal treno sarà nientemeno che la leggendaria Chimera di Arezzo!
For the past two weeks, I’ve been happily settled in the heart of Arezzo’s historic center, putting the final touches on the Matta Italian Language Immersion Program in collaboration with Paola Testi’s school, Cultura Italiana. Now everything is ready, and I’m excited to welcome the 2025 Matta Italian immersion students — they arrive tomorrow! And one of the very first “creatures” they’ll meet (besides me, la matta, of course!) when they step off the train is none other than Arezzo’s legendary Chimera!

What is a Chimera?
La Chimera, secondo la mitologia greca, era un mostro terrificante con la testa di leone, il corpo di capra e la coda di serpente, in grado di sputare fuoco! Una creatura formata da più animali, simbolo di caos e distruzione. Fu sconfitta dal giovane eroe Bellerofonte, che volava sul cavallo alato Pegaso.
According to Greek mythology, the Chimera was a terrifying monster with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a serpent—and yes, it breathed fire! A hybrid beast made of several animals, it symbolized chaos and destruction. The young hero Bellerophon defeated it with the help of his winged horse Pegasus.

La Chimera di Arezzo è considerata uno dei massimi capolavori dell’arte etrusca. Risale al 400 a.C. e fu realizzata interamente in bronzo. Con una lunghezza di 129 cm e un’altezza di 78,5 cm, la statua originariamente faceva parte di un gruppo scultoreo che rappresentava il combattimento tra Chimera e Bellerofonte.
The Chimera of Arezzo is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Etruscan art. Dating back to 400 BCE, it’s made entirely of bronze. Measuring 129 cm in length and 78.5 cm high, it was originally part of a sculptural group depicting the epic battle between Chimera and Bellerophon.
La Scoperta Medicea
The Medici Discovery
La Chimera fu scoperta il 15 novembre 1553 durante la costruzione della Fortezza Medicea di Arezzo, una possente struttura fortificata voluta da Cosimo I de’ Medici, Granduca di Toscana. All’epoca, Cosimo stava consolidando il suo potere in tutta la regione, e Arezzo—posizionata strategicamente sulla collina di San Donato—era il luogo ideale per un baluardo che rafforzasse il dominio fiorentino. Ma quello che doveva essere un semplice progetto difensivo prese una svolta quasi magica quando, durante gli scavi vicino a Porta San Lorentino, gli operai portarono alla luce una strana bestia in bronzo: la Chimera!
The Chimera was discovered on November 15, 1553, during the construction of the Fortezza Medicea di Arezzo, a mighty fortress commissioned by none other than Cosimo I de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. At the time, Cosimo was busy flexing his power muscles all across Tuscany, and Arezzo—perched strategically atop the hill of San Donato—was the perfect spot for a stronghold to reinforce Florentine dominance. But what began as just another Medici building project took a magical twist when workers near Porta San Lorentino unearthed a strange, bronze beast from the earth: the Chimera!
Cosimo, che non era un duca qualunque ma un grande amante dell’arte (e un uomo con un certo gusto per i simboli drammatici), capì subito il valore e il potere evocativo della scultura. Fece ripulire e restaurare l’opera nientemeno che da Benvenuto Cellini e—come ogni buon Medici che si rispetti—la rivendicò per Firenze. La Chimera fu quindi trasferita nella collezione granducale e ricevette un posto d’onore nel Palazzo Vecchio, nella Sala di Leone X, dove ruggì in tutta la sua gloria bronzea come simbolo del potere, del mito e della magnificenza dei Medici.
Cosimo, being no ordinary duke but a passionate patron of the arts (and a man with a flair for dramatic symbolism), immediately recognized the sculpture’s power. He had it cleaned and restored by the famous Benvenuto Cellini and—like any good Medici—promptly claimed it for Florence. Off it went to join the Grand Duke’s growing collection of artistic treasures, eventually finding a regal home in the Palazzo Vecchio in the Hall of Leo X, where it roared in all its bronze glory as a reminder of Medici strength, myth, and magnificence.

Oggi, la Chimera originale risiede ancora a Firenze nel Museo Archeologico di Firenze. (Anche se resta il sogno nel cassetto di molti Aretini riportare un giorno a casa l’originale bellezza etrusca… per farla posare — o ruggire — di nuovo ad Arezzo.) Ma, come accennato prima, le copie di questa creatura mitica si trovano ovunque ad Arezzo! Mentre i miei studenti esplorano la città, la noteranno nelle piazze, proprio davanti alla stazione, nascosta nei parchi, nei musei e persino in una piccola replica che fa la guardia davanti al Comune di Arezzo. La Chimera è ormai una vera celebrità locale—non si sa mai dove potrebbe spuntare!
Today, the original Chimera still resides in Florence in the Archaeological Museum. (Though it remains the fond dream of many Aretini to one day bring the original Etruscan bronze beauty back home to roost… or roar.) But as I mentioned earlier, copies of this mythical beast are everywhere in Arezzo! As my students explore town, they’ll spot her in piazzas, right in front of the train station, nestled in parks, museums, and even standing guard as a smaller replica outside the Comune di Arezzo. The Chimera is a true local celebrity—you never know where she’ll pop up next!
