You can use “così… come”

to compare adjectives.

You can also use “tanto… quanto”

to compare nouns AND adjectives.

Conosci il film Via col vento? In inglese, il titolo è Gone with the Wind? Prima, c’era il libro e poi il film. Hai mai letto il libro? Hai mai visto il film? In italiano il nome della protagonista Scarlett è stato cambiato a Rossella O’Hara. Interessante, no?

Do you know the film Via col vento? In English, the title is Gone with the Wind? First, there was a book and then the film. Have you ever read the book? Have you ever seen the film? In Italian, the name of the protagonist Scarlett was changed to Rossella O’Hara. Interesting right?

Usiamo il libro e il film per fare alcune paragoni uguali.

Esempi usando: “così… come”

Rossella O’Hara è così intelligente come Rhett Butler.

Scarlett O’Hara is as intelligent as Rhett Butler.

Incredibile… ma il film Via col Vento è così interessante come il libro!

Incredible, but the movie Gone with the Wind is as interesting as the book!

Esempi usando: “tanto… quanto”

Rosella O’Hara è tanto intelligente quanto Rhett Butler.

Scarlett O’Hara is as intelligent as Rhett Butler.

Da notare

In “tanto…quanto” constructions with nouns, tanto and quanto agree in gender and number ONLY with nouns they describe quantities of.

Esempi:

Rossella ha tanti amici quanto Rhett. / Scarlett has as many friends as Rhett.

I ragazzi hanno tanti libri quanto le ragazze. / The boys have as many books as the girls.

Le ragazze hanno tanti libri quanto i ragazzi. / The girls have as many books as the boys.

I ragazzi hanne tante mele quanto le ragazzi. / The boys have as many apples as the girls.

Le ragazze hanno tante mele quanto i ragazzi. / The girls have as many apples as the boys.

Attenzione! The meaning of the sentence changes if you make “quanto” plural

If you were to say: I ragazzi hanno tanti libri quante ragazze.

You are saying: The boys have as many books as they have girls.
