Abbiamo appena passato i giorni più caldi dell’estate. In inglese chiamiamo questo periodo “the Dog Days of Summer.” In Italiano, l’espressione è “la canicola estiva.” Volete sapere perché? Rimanete qua e ve lo racconterò.
We’ve just passed through the hottest days of summer. In English, we call this time – the dog days of summer. In Italian, the expression is “la canicola estiva.” Want to know why? Stick around, and I’ll tell you!

Quest’anno in Italia è stata particolarmente torrida da Bologna, Bolzano, Firenze a Venezia e Verona, fino a Roma. Alcuni turisti pazzi sono saltati nelle fontane per rinfrescarsi. Attenzione! Questo non va bene affatto. Non si fa. È una cosa molto brutta e molto irrispettosa…quindi per favore, per quanto invitante possa sembrare un tuffo nella fontana di Trevi in un giorno caldissimo, trattenetevi! Per favore! Fate bella figura.
Whew! We’ve made it through another long hot summer. In Italy this year it was particularly scorching from Bologna, Bolzano, Florence to Venice and Verona and all the way down to Rome. Crazy tourists have been hopping into fountains to cool off. Just be advised, by the way, that is very bad form and very disrespectful…so please, as tempting as it might seem to take a plunge into the Trevi fountain on a hot Roman day…folks restrain yourselves! Please! Make a good impression!
Ora siamo quasi alla fine di agosto e si spera che il caldo si sia finito. L’estate sta finendo e le giornate più fresche sono dietro l’angolo. Dopo aver trascorso il mese di giugno a Montepulciano con il mio gruppo linguistico, mi ritrovo a fare le valigie per tornare in Italia ad Arezzo, con un nuovo gruppo.
We are now almost at the end of August and hopefully, the heat has broken. Summer is winding down and fall and cooler days are just around the corner. After spending the month of June in Montepulciano with my language group, I now find myself packing my bags once again to return to Italy and Arezzo with my fall language group.
Ma viaggiare in questo periodo – quello autunnale, con tutte le variazioni del clima e delle temperature – dai giorni caldi a quelli freschi – preparare la valigia è un po’ più difficile. Al momento sto decidendo che cosa prendere e che cosa lasciare a casa. La mia valigia è aperta e ogni giorno metto dentro qualcosa e poi la tolgo. Che indecisione! Ma una cosa è certa. Metterò il mio foulard blu e giallo da indossare durante la settimana della giostra per fare il tifo per il mio quartiere Porta Santo Spirito nella prossima gara ad Arezzo.
But traveling at this time of the year, with all the variations in weather and temperature – from hot to chilly days – makes packing a bit of an ordeal. At the moment I’m debating what to take and what to leave at home. My suitcase lies open on the floor, and each day I put things in and then take things out again. But, one thing for sure is that I’m packing my Blue and Yellow Scarf to wear during the week of the joust so that I can cheer for my neighborhood Santo Spirito in the next match in Arezzo.
Ho già detto che la parte più calda dell’estate è spesso chiamata in inglese come “the Dog Days of Summer.” È un’espressione piuttosto curiosa, non credete? Le giornate dei cani sono caratterizzate dal caldo, siccità, temporali improvvisi, letargia…e anche cani pazzi. Forse vi ricordate la scena di To Kill a Mockingbird in italiano “Il buio oltre la siepe”, in cui Atticus Finch incontra un cane rabbioso per la strada.
I mentioned earlier that the hottest part of the summer is often referred to in English as the “Dog Days of summer.” It’s a rather curious expression don’t you think? Dog Days are typified by heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy…and of course, mad dogs. Perhaps you remember the scene in To Kill a Mockingbird in which Atticus Finch encounters a rabid dog in the street.
Ma l’espressione non viene da cani pazzi, né da cani pigri. No, davvero! Per trovare la vera ragione da dove proviene quest’espressione dobbiamo solo guardare il cielo estivo e pensare all’antica Roma!
But the expression doesn’t come from crazy dogs – nor lazy dogs either. No, indeed! To find the answer, we only need to look at the summer sky and think about ancient Rome!
Guisto! Mi avete sentito bene! I romani chiamavano i giorni più caldi e umidi dell’estate “diēs caniculārēs” – giorni di cane. La ragione di questo è perché i romani associavano i giorni più caldi dell’estate con la stella Sirius. Sirius era conosciuta come il Dog Star perché era la stella più luminosa del cielo notturno e si trova nella costellazione del Cane Maggiore.
That’s right! You heard me right. The Romans called the hottest, most humid days of summer “diēs caniculārēs” or “dog days.” The reason for this is because the Romans associated the hottest days of summer with the star Sirius. Sirius was known as the “Dog Star” because it was the brightest star in the night sky and is located in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog).
Sirius è così brillante che gli antichi romani pensarono che irradiava calore in più verso la Terra e aggiungeva calore al calore del Sole facendo salire le temperature ancora più in alto. Per gli antichi romani, la canicola estiva accadeva dal 24 luglio al 24 agosto.
Sirius is so bright that the ancient Romans thought it radiated extra heat toward Earth and added heat to the Sun’s heat-causing temperatures to climb even higher. For the ancient Romans, the dog days of summer occurred from about July 24 to around August 24.
La spiegazione romana del perché queste giornate estive siano così calde – intelligente come potrebbe essere stata in quell’epoca – in realtà non ha nulla a che fare con la stella Sirius. Invece, l’inclinazione della Terra spiega perché questi giorni tendono ad essere i giorni più caldi.
The Roman explanation why these summer days are so hot, brilliant as it may well have been at the time, actually doesn’t have anything to do with the star Sirius either. Instead, the tilt of the Earth explains why these days tend to be the summer’s hottest.
Insomma! Un piccolo fatto divertente per intrattenere i vostri amici al prossimo cocktail party estivo!
