Naturalmente i madrelingua inglese scelgono subito il verbo “visitare” in italiano perché suona molto siile alla nostra parola inglese “visit.” E in effetti è la traduzione letterale.
Want to sound like a real Italian? Here is a little tip! When you are talking about going to see someone in the Italian language there are two ways of expressing the idea. Of course, English speakers immediately select the verb “visitare” in Italian because it sounds very much like our English word “visit.” And indeed, it is the literal translation.

Nell’italiano parlato, in realtà è molto più naturale e fluida usare l’espressione “andare a trovare” quando si esprime il concetto di un incontro tra gli amici e la famiglia. L’espressione “andare a trovare” qualcuno vuol dire che state per stare insieme—avete intenzione di scambiare due parole o avere una cena informale specificamente con familiari, amici, persone si vogliono bene e a cui si tieni.
In spoken Italian, it is actually much more natural and fluid sounding to use the expression “andare a trovare” when you are expressing the concept of going to see someone or meeting between friends and family. The expression “andare a trovare” means you are planning on “hanging out” with someone—you plan to chat, have a casual dinner specifically with family members, people who are friends, the people you love and care a lot about.

Il verbo “visitare” invece è usato di più per riferirsi ad andare in un “luogo” o in un “posto.” Potrebbe essere un parco, un museo, una città, o un paese. Potrebbe anche essere uno studio medico o un dentista. Viene anche usato quando ci si riferisce ad un programma per incontrare persone con cui non si è così vicini, persone che non si conoscono molto bene e si desidera essere più educati e formali. Inoltre, potrebbe essere un incontro in un contesto formale, come tra re e regine, dignitari, capitani di industria, persino stelle del cinema.
The verb “visitare” on the other hand is used more to refer to going to a “place.” It could be a park, a museum, a city, or a country. It could also be a doctor’s office or the dentist. It is also used when referring to plan to meet people you are not so close to, people you don’t know very well, and you wish to be more polite and formal with. Also, it could be a meeting in a formal setting, as between kings and queens, dignitaries, captains of industry—even movie stars.
