So esattamente cosa vuol dire faticare con l’italiano all’inizio—ci sono passata anch’io! Quando ho preso in mano per la prima volta un libro di grammatica a Firenze, non avevo nessuna intenzione di imparare la lingua—ero lì per studiare arte. Ma in qualche modo, mi sono ritrovata in una vera e propria storia d’amore con l’italiano… e non senza qualche momento drammatico. Ci credi? Facevo piangere i miei insegnanti di italiano (sul serio!). Non riuscivo proprio a capire come funzionassero le coniugazioni dei verbi.
I know exactly what it feels like to struggle with Italian in the beginning—because I’ve been there! When I first picked up a grammar book in Florence, I wasn’t trying to learn the language—I was there to study art. But somehow, I ended up in a full-blown love affair with Italian… and not without a few dramatic moments. Believe it or not, I used to make my Italian teachers cry (seriously!). I just couldn’t wrap my head around verb conjugations.
Eppure eccomi qui—anni dopo—insegno italiano, scrivo romanzi in italiano e accompagno studenti in viaggi di immersione linguistica in tutta Italia. Mai sottovalutare il potere di una lingua quando ti prende il cuore… potrebbe davvero cambiarti la vita!
And yet, here I am—years later—teaching Italian, writing novels in Italian, and leading immersive language trips across Italy. Never underestimate the power of the language when it grabs hold of you… it just might change your life!
Ho creato Studentessa Matta come diario personale per tenere traccia dei miei progressi e condividere tutto ciò che facevo per imparare l’italiano. Perché il nome “Matta”?
Why the Name “Matta”?
Matta significa “simpaticamente fuori di testa” (ma nel senso migliore del termine!). Secondo me, per imparare davvero una lingua, bisogna lasciar andare le inibizioni — dare un po’ di matto! — e buttarsi. Non abbiate paura di sbagliare. Anzi, se non fate errori ogni giorno, forse non vi state impegnando abbastanza! Gli errori sono i nostri migliori maestri.
Matta means “a little crazy” (but in the best, and most engaging way) In my opinion, you have to let go of your inhibitions — go a little crazy — to truly dive into language learning. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. In fact, if you aren’t making mistakes daily, you might not be trying hard enough! Mistakes are our best teachers.
Come si dice in italiano? Si impara sbagliando!

Many learners struggle to speak Italian because they don’t have enough words in their linguistic vocabulary bag. My advice?
Imparate 3–5 nuove parole al giorno e usatele subito—parlate con loro, giocateci, fatene le vostre alleate! Solo così diventeranno davvero parte del vostro vocabolario.
Learn 3–5 new words a day and start using them right away—talk to them, play with them, make them your allies! That’s how they truly become part of your vocabulary.

Learn new words daily! Start with these: Scapare & Scopare
Non confondere “scapare” con “scopare”! La pronuncia è tutto! “Scapare” vuol dire “to escape” mentre “scopare” vuol dire… ehm… “to sweep” (o qualcosa di molto più piccante!).
Don’t confuse “scapare” with “scopare”! Pronunciation is everything1 “Scapare” means “to escape” while “scopare” means… ahem… “to sweep” (or something much spicier!).
