Soon I will be back in Italy again. I am returning to Arezzo for the next Joust and for my next Italian study program with the Cultura Italiana School directed by Paola Testi. We have a great group of students all excited to learn and speak the language and I can’t wait to meet them. I hope to also meet again some of the jousters this year. Above is a photo of last year’s winner from Porta Santo Spirito – Blue and Yellow. I am a fan of this team because the school is located in the Porta Santo Spirito neighborhood and we will join all the fans celebrating the jousters at the good luck dinner held the evening before the joust.

Usually the Piazza Grande looks like this. It is very steep and for the most part the space is wide open and empty. But during the days of the Joust there is a big ta-do in the square, and there is lots going on! Soon there the bleachers will be set up where the fans sit to watch the competition. Below is a picture of a jouster in costume with a lance attacking the Burrato – a dummy that represents the kind of India, the enemy, also known as the Saracin.

People from each of the four neighborhoods, that represent the city’s teams, dress in costume and there is a big show. There is a procession of horse, and dignitaries, flag throwers and musician. There is magic in the air and you feel as if you have been town back in time.

Certo, anch’io e tutti i studenti ci mettiamo i colori della nostra squadra – Blu e Giallo. Ci sono foulard in vendita dappertutto.

Certainly, I and all the students will wear the colors of our team – Blue & Yellow. There are scarves sold all over the place.

After the competition, the winners and all the fans will go to the Cathedral of San Donato to celebrate. It is where the Golden lance is presented to the winning team.

Arezzo seems like a fairy tale and in reality it is! It is a perfect place to learn Italian and take part in a very unusual historical festival that is quite charming.

I invite you to follow me during the following weeks – in fact during the entire month of September – when I find myself back in Italy. The first weeks I will spend in Arezzo and then I will go to Florence for the Dreaming Sophia program of Art. Together with others passionate about art we will follow in the steps of my heroine Sophia. We will visit special places in Florence and we will have the chance to paint in the Boboli gardens behind the Pitti Palace.

Join me in Montepulciano June 2018

So if you can’t go in person…you can take a virtual tour with me. I hope our paths will cross next year when I will do a program in Montepulciano in June and when I return to Arezzo again in the fall of 2018. For more information and to learn more follow the links below.
