Buon San Valentino!

Nessuno mi AMA come il mio FRIGO. Ogni volta che lo apro, si ILLUMINA!
No one LOVES me like my refrigerator. Every time I open it, it LIGHTS UP!

Today is Valentine’s Day, the holiday of lovers. How did this day come about?

Its origin coincides with the Catholic Church’s attempt to “Christianize” the pagan rite of fertility. For the ancient Romans, February was the time period for preparing for the season of planting and rebirth by blessing the fields. They celebrated in “ahem” a somewhat licentious way that included very sexy mating rituals, orgies and the smearing around of animal blood.

In 496 a.D Pope Gelasius canceled all this pagan fun (what a party pooper!) by decreeing that the cult of San Valentino be followed instead. But who was this saint? He was a roman bishop who had been martyred in Rome on February 14, 273. He is considered the patron saint of lovers because legend has it that he was the first religious man to celebrate the union between a pagan legionary and a young Christian.

The legend of Valentine’s Day and the association with romantic love was later introduced as a holiday for lovers thanks to the circulation of Geoffrey Chaucer’s poem “Parliament of Birds” that speaks of the engagement of Richard II of England to Anna of Bohemia.

At any rate, in France and England, in the Middle Ages, it was believed that in mid-February the mating of birds began: an event that gave way to consecrating February 14 as the festival of lovers.

There are so many varieties of love. In the name of San Valentino celebrate the day with whomever and however you like. I myself have a date with my fridge!

Baci e abbracci a tutti! Mwah!
