È Nata una Star: Film di Lucio Pellegrini – Quello che ho visto ieri sera

Cheri Passell who writes the blog “I love Italian Movies” has a new feature called “What I watched last night“. She invites guests to post about Italian movies that they have watched recently and the other day she invited me to join in the fun! Here is my guest post about the movie “È nata una star?” which I actually watched for the first time last Sunday evening. Visit her blog to see my guest post and check out the other movie reviews! Ieri sera ho guardato “È nata una star?” un film girato da Lucio Pellegrini nel 2006. Ma non confondere questo film con “È nata una stella / A star is born” il film girato nel 1954 con Judy Garland come protagonista, per il quale è stata candidata come miglior attrice. Questo film ha invece Luciana Littizzetto, la attrice comica ed eccentrica, come protagonista e i co-portagonisti Rocco Papaleo e Pietro Castellitto. Il film è basato su un racconto originale “Not a Star”, da Nick Hornby, uno scrittore inglese. È piuttosto raro che un famoso scrittore inglese avrebbe avuto il suo romanzo adattato prima in Italia o all’estero. Ma sembra che gli italiani stiano approfittando di questa pratica, siccome l’hanno fatto prima con un “remake” di un film francese “Benvenuti al sud” e “la peggior settimana della mia vita” un film italiano basato sul sitcom britannica.

Last night I watched “È nata una star?” a 2006 film directed by Lucio Pellegrini. But, don’t confuse this film with “È nata una stella / A star is born” the 1954 film starring Judy Garland, for which she was nominated for best actress. This film instead stars the funny and quirky comedic actress Luciana Littizzetto and co-stars Rocco Papaleo and Pietro Castellitto. The film is based on an original short story “Not a Star” written by Nick Hornby, an English novelist. It is a bit unusual that a famous English writer would have his novel adapted first in Italy or abroad. But it seems that Italians are taking advantage of this as seen in the adaptations of “Benvenuti al sud” a remake of a French film and “La peggior settimana della mia vita” an Italian film based on the British sitcom. 

“È nata una star?” è una commedia eppure è un film toccante. È una storia divertente e franca su una madre (Lucia) che scopre che suo figlio di diciannove anni (Marco) che apparentemente non brilla, è anonimo e senza talento ha in realtà un grande “talento” nascosto. Un giorno una vicina impicciona infila nella loro cassetta delle lettere il dvd di un film pornografico in cui il protagonista è proprio Marco. Una rapida visualizzazione del film rivela che il figlio di Lucia è un attore terribile, ma le sue doti di attore sono offuscate e compensate dal fatto che lui è…ehm…piuttosto magnificamente ben dotato. Questo naturalmente mette in moto una serie di eventi comici e scene tenere in cui Lucia e suo marito Fausto devono fare i conti con la situazione e per un po’ il loro mondo è sottosopra completamente. Questa notizia riesce a modificare non solo il rapporto e la percezione che Lucia ha per suo figlio, ma anche altri rapporti importanti nella sua vita compresi i suoi rapporti con suo padre morto e “il gemello del porno star” che morì alla nascita. La storia si incentra sull’importanza che attribuiamo agli eventi nella nostra vita e dove ci rivolgiamo a scoprire confort, pace e significato.

“È nata una star?” is a comedy and yet it is a poignant film. It is a funny and frank story about a mother (Lucia) who discovers that her seemingly, nondescript and talentless nineteen-year-old son (Marco) actually does has quite a large and hidden “talent”. Out of the blue, she receives a package delivered by a nosey neighbor which contains a porn film featuring her son as the star of the film. Rapid screening of the film reveals that Lucia’s son is quite a terrible actor, however, his acting skills are overshadowed and compensated by his being… ahem…quite magnificently well endowed. This, of course, sets into motion a series of comic events and tender scenes, in which Lucia and her husband Fausto must come to terms with the situation and for a while, their world is turned completely upside. This bit of news manages to alter not only Lucia’s relationship with and perception of her son but other key relationships in her life as well, including her relationships with her dead father and the porn star’s” twin who died at birth. The story is very much about the importance we assign to the events in our lives and where we turn to discover comfort, peace, and meaning.

Ho comprato questo film nell’aeroporto di Roma l’autunno scorso. Sinceramente, non avevo idea di cosa trattasse, salvo che sulla copertina c’era la Littizzetto e ho pensato che sarebbe stato divertente. Sono rimasta piacevolmente sorpresa dal film. Forse è perché come Lucia io sono una mamma di un paio di ragazzi e sto sempre cercando di trovare un equilibrio e mantenere le cose in prospettiva mentre i miei ragazzi scoprono i propri percorsi. Non sto dicendo che uno dei loro sono sulla strada per diventare una stella di porn, intendiamoci… ma nel quadro più ampio delle cose, dobbiamo decidere quanta importanza assegnare alle cose grandi e non preoccuparsi così tanto delle cose piccole.

I picked up this movie in the Rome airport on my way out of town last fall. Truthfully, I had no idea what the movie was about, except that on the cover was la Littizzetto and I thought it would be a fun comic romp. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the film. Perhaps it is because that like Lucia I am a mother to a couple of boys and I am always trying to find a balance and keep things in perspective as my kids discover their own paths. Not that any of them are on the path to becoming porn stars, mind you…but in the grander scheme of things, we must decide how much importance to assign to the big things and “not sweat the small stuff” so much.

Ieri sera ero in vena di un film leggero e questo film non mi ha deluso. Non era troppo “scuro” o intenso e pieno di grande angoscia. Ho apprezzato anche la decorazione del set e i personaggi secondari e il fatto che sebbene Luciana Littizzetto, che è nota per il suo rapido discorso e le imprecazioni colorate, la sua interpretazione era simpatica ed è stato molto facile capire le sue battute. Ho apprezzato anche la scene di danza che Fausto ha fatto sulla canzone di Mina. Forse il film è stato troppo leggero per il tema e la sceneggiatura era un po’ banale, ma alla fine l’ho trovato una commedia divertente che ha tenuto il mio interesse fino all fine.

Last night I was in the mood for a light film and this film did not disappoint. It was not too “dark” or intense or full of great angst. I also liked the set decoration and the secondary characters and the fact that although Luciana Littizzetto, who is known for her rapid speech, colloquialisms, and colorful swearing, played a sympathetic character and her dialogue was remarkably easy to follow and understand! I also enjoyed Fausto’s dance scene to one of Mina’s songs. Perhaps there could have been a bit more character development and perhaps it was a bit corny, but in the end, I found it to be an enjoyable comedy that kept my interest until the very end.
