Lo scorso mese ad Arezzo ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare la madre della mia amica Debora e mi ha spiegato come realizzare il tombolo. Avete mai sentito parlare di tombolo? Sì? Immagino che abbiate appena pensato al gioco con cui gli italiano si divertono a Natale che si chiama tombola. Ma non sto parlando di quello. Quello è la tombola. Mi riferisco piuttosto a qualcosa che Caterina de’ Medici inventò nel Cinquecento. Siete confusi? State sintonizzati. Tra poco vi racconterò tutto.
Last month in Arezzo I was very fortunate to meet the mom of my friend Debora e she explained to me how one does tombolo. Have you ever heard of tombolo? Yes? I imagine you all are thinking about the Italian game played at Christmas called tombola. But I’m not talking about that. Instead, I’m talking about something that Caterina de’ Medici in the 1500s invented. Are you a bit confused? Stay tuned. In just a bit I’ll tell you all about it.
Allora! Eccomi! Sono appena tornata dall’Italia. Il soggiorno è stato fantastico. All’inizio di giugno sono stata a Montepulciano con un gruppo di ottimi studenti. Abbiamo studiato presso a Il Sasso Italian School e ci siamo trovati bene in Toscana. In fatti così bene che ho intenzione di tornarci l’anno prossimo – a Montepulciano con un nuovo gruppo.
So…here I am! I’ve just returned from spending a month in Italy. It was a wonderful time. At the beginning of June, I was in Montepulciano with a fantastic group of students. We studied at Il Sasso Italian Language School, and we enjoyed our time together and being in Tuscany. I was so enchanted, I intend to return next year to Montepulciano with a new group of students.
Dopo che il programma è finito lì, e dopo tanti abbracci – perché ho fatto tante nuove amicizie lì… sono andata ad Arezzo per una settimana di vacanza e per vedere la giostra notturna. Non so che cosa di dirvi…sono quasi senza parole. Ogni volta che vedo la giostra sono molto emozionata… è un vero spettacolo e mostra l’orgoglio che gli Aretini hanno per la loro città, la loro cultura e la loro storia. Non vedo l’ora di tornarci l’anno prossimo anche con un nuovo gruppo per studiare a Cultura Italiana e per vedere la giostra che ci si svolge a giugno e a settembre.
After the program ended there, and after so many hugs (because I made so many new friends there), I went to Arezzo for a week of vacation and to see the evening joust. I don’t know what to tell you… I’m almost speechless. Every time I see the joust I become emotional… it is a real “spettacolo” and demonstrates the pride that the Aretini have for their city, their culture, and their history. I can’t wait to come back next year with a new group to study at Cultura Italiana and to see the Giostra del Saracino that takes place in June and September.

Quando sono stata ad Arezzo, durante la settimana ho incontrato tanti amici vecchi e nuovi. Una di loro è la mia amica Debora Bresciani. Forse già la riconosci per alcuni guest post che ha scritto per il blog studente pazzo. Mi ha portato a casa per presentarmi sua madre – Anna Maria Gherardi – non soltanto per conoscerla di persona ma perché la madre di Debora ha un talento raro! Lei fa l’arte del merletto a tombolo.
When I was in Arezzo, during the week I met up with old and new friends. One of them is my friend Debora Bresciani. Perhaps you already recognize Debora from several of the guest posts she has written for the Studentessa Matta blog. She took me home to meet her mom – Anna Maria Gherardi – not only to meet her in person but because the mom of Debora has a rare talent! She creates beautiful pieces of lace using the art of tombolo.
Che cos’è l’arte del merletto al tombolo? Beh, è una vecchia arte che risale all’epoca di Caterina de’ Medici. È un modo antico di lavorare il pizzo. La madre di Debora lo fa da anni, sin da piccola. Debora ricorda che durante la sua infanzia sentiva sempre il rumore dei fuselli in sottofondo mentre sua mamma lavorava alla tua tavola speciale creando piccoli pezzi di pizzo. Questi sono stati poi assemblati per creare tante cose come tovaglie e tovaglioli.
What exactly is merletto al tombolo? Well, it is a very old art form that harks back to the age of Caterina de’ Medici. It is an antique way of making lace by hand. Debora’s mom has done this type of work since she was a girl and during her childhood, Debra remembers hearing the noise the spools of the threads always made in the background as her mom worked on her roundtable creating pieces of lace that she put together later to make things like napkins and tablecloths.
Quando ho chiesto a Debora se anche lei avesse imparato di fare questo lavoro lei ha detto decisamente no! Perché…mi hai detto… ci vuole molta pazienza per sistemare tutti i filetti seguendo un modello complicato senza fare un grande confusione. Hai ragione lei. Neanch’io credo di farcela!
When I asked Debra if she had learned how to do this kind of handwork too she decidedly said no! Because…she said…it takes a lot of patience to keep track of all the spools following a complicated pattern without tangling them all up. She is right. I don’t think I would be very successful at this either.
Ho un grande rispetto per la mamma di Debora e ho trovato molto interessante guardarla mentre lei faceva una dimostrazione per me. Ho fatto un piccolo video mentre era al lavoro, e ora mi piacerebbe condividerlo con te. Ascolta e osserva mentre la mamma di Debora spiega come lavorare il tombolo.

Recentemente ho perso la mia mamma e so che alla mia mamma sarebbe piaciuto osservare come Anna Maria lavora il merletto al tombolo. Spero di tornare presto ad Arezzo per trascorrere un altro gradevole pomeriggio in loro compagnia.
Thanks, Debora and Anna Maria. Moms are very special and have talents other than just raising a family. Recently I lost my mom and I know that my mom would have loved to watch how Anna Maria made lace the old-fashioned way. I hope to return soon to spend another lovely afternoon in their company.
