In a new romantic Netflix comedy, “4 Metà,” (Four to Dinner) director Alessio Maria Federici tackles the complex and burning question “do soul mates exist?”
La premessa: Una coppia felicemente sposata Luca (Flavio Furno) e Sara (Marta Gastini) decidono di organizzare una cena e mentre si riuniscono e apparecchiano la tavola discutono amichevolmente a favore e contro l’esistenza delle anime gemelle. Mentre Luca versa più vino nei suoi amici calici nel tentativo di giustificare il suo caso, comincia a raccontare loro una storia che è accaduto l’anno prima.
The premise: A happily married couple, Luca (Flavio Furno) and Sara (Marta Gastini), decide to host a dinner party. As they gather and set the table, they argue good-naturedly for and against the existence of soul mates. As Luca pours more wine into his friend’s glasses to justify his case, he begins to tell them a story that happened the year before.
Luca racconta loro di un precedente incontro nella loro casa in cui lui e Sara avevano invitato altri quattro amici single, (Matilde Gioli), Dario (Giuseppe Maggio), Matteo (Matteo Martari), e Chiara (Ilenia Pastorelli) con le buone intenzioni di organizzare incontri adatti tra i quattro.
Luca tells them about a previous gathering at their home in which he and Sara had invited four other single friends, Giulia (Matilde Gioli), Dario (Giuseppe Maggio), Matteo (Matteo Martari), and Chiara (Ilenia Pastorelli), with the good intentions of setting up suitable matches between the four.
A questo punto della storia, la scena cambia al pranzo che si è successo l’anno prima e vediamo gli amici single Dario e Giulia cattuarati in un flirt, mentre Matteo e Chiara scambiano numeri volentieri. Sembra che la coppia sposata abbia fatto bene il loro lavoro, e hanno infatti trovato perfetti compagni di amore per i loro quattro amici single.
At this point in the story, the scene cuts to the luncheon that occurred the year before and we see the single friends, Dario and Giulia caught in a flirtation, while Matteo and Chiara exchange numbers willingly. It seems the married couple had done their work well and they had indeed found perfect love mates for their four single friends.
Però, prima che le coppie possano camminare troppo lungo la strada dell’amore, il film prende una svolta interessante. Lo spettatore viene riportato al giorno in cui i singoli si incontrano per la prima volta, ma a causa di una serie di incidenti e disavventure che impediscono ai partner originali di uscire al loro primo appuntamento, gli uomini e le donne si accoppiano in modo diverso.
But, before the couples get too far down the dating path and things become too serious, the film takes an interesting twist. The viewer is taken back to the day when the singles first meet, but because of a series of incidences and misadventures that prevent the original partners from going out on their first dates, the men and women pair up differently.
Mentre il film continua, seguiamo le coppie attraverso due esistenze parallele, e vediamo come le vite di questi quattro individui si svolgono quando sono accoppiati in modo diverso.
As the movie continues, we follow the couples through two parallel existences, and we see how the lives of these four individuals play out when they are paired differently.
Mi è piaciuto il film, soprattutto la performance dell’attrice Matilde Gioli. Era completamente accattivante e ha portato un’energia unica per il personaggio poliedrico di Giulia nel film. Ha catturato magnificamente le varie sfumature della personalità di una donna attraverso vivaci battute, risate nervose, dichiarazioni audaci, gesti tentativi e sorrisi fiduciosi. È stato divertente per guardare le sue trasformazioni quando accoppiato con i due personaggi maschili in tutto il film.
I enjoyed the film, especially the performance by actress Matilde Gioli. She was entirely captivating and brought a unique energy to Giulia’s multi-faceted character in the movie. She beautifully captured the various nuances of a woman’s personality through lively banter, nervous laughter, bold statements, tentative gestures, and confident smiles. It was entertaining to watch her transformations when paired with the two male characters throughout the movie.
Alla fine del film, non ci viene data una risposta definitiva a cui le coppie finiscono insieme. Spetta allo spettatore alla fine decidere. O forse è il senso del direttore di darci “un THUNK” sulla testa per dire, “realmente, la gente – là non è partner perfetti di anima fuori là per c’è ne di noi.” Invece, possiamo trovare l’amore e la felicità in base alle circostanze, ai tempi, alla longitudine e alla latitudine. E se abbiamo la forza d’animo e l’impegno di fare un lavoro di relazione, probabilmente possiamo farlo funzionare con molte persone là fuori in questo grande mondo in cui vaghiamo!
At the end of the film, we aren’t given a definitive answer to which couples end up together. It is up to the viewer ultimately to decide. Or perhaps it is the director’s way of giving us a “THUNK” on the head to say, “really, people — there are no perfect soul partners out there for any of us.” Instead, we can find love and happiness based on circumstances, timing, longitude, and latitude. And if we have the fortitude and commitment to make a relationship work, we can probably make it work with many individuals out there in this big wide world we roam!
Per il personaggio di Guilia, però, ho sicuramente la mia preferenza per quanto riguarda l’uomo, o anima gemella, che spero con cui finisca! Sempre il romantico – questo sono io!
However, for Guilia’s character, I certainly have my preference regarding the man or soul partner I hope she ends up with! Always the romantic — that’s me!
