Eccomi di nuovo! Stavo dicendo che sono andata a cavallo sulla spiaggia. Qui in California siamo fortunati perché anche a gennaio fa bel tempo. Non è troppo freddo e possiamo fare tante attività all’esterno. Non dobbiamo preoccuparci di temporali, o grandine, o tempeste di neve. Però se si va nella direzione opposta al rispetto alla spiaggia, a est, circa tre ore in macchina si raggiungerebbero le montagne dove è possibile sciare. Infatti alcuni amici hanno deciso di andare a Tahoe questo weekend e mi hanno inviato le foto dell’autostrada solo poche ore da me qui a San Francisco!
Here I am! As I was saying, I went to the beach to go horseback riding. Here in California, we are fortunate because even in January there is good weather. It isn’t too cold and we can do many activities outside. We don’t have to worry about lightning storms, hail, or snowstorms. However, if you go in the opposite direction of the beach here, to the east about three hours by car you will reach the mountains where it is possible to ski. In fact, some friends decided to go to Tahoe this weekend and they sent me pictures of the highway only a couple of hours away from me here in San Francisco!
Quando ho visto che la previsione per il fine settimana era buona, ho deciso di andare a Half Moon Bay un’avventura a cavallo lungo la costa della California.
When I saw that the weather forecast here was going to be warm and sunny, I decided to go to Half Moon Bay to have a horseback riding adventure along the California coastline.
Half Moon Bay è una città eclettico vicino al mare. Tanta gente viene a fare surf. La spiaggia è una favola. È grande e bianca, il mare è blu e ci sono scogliere enormi. Mi piace andarci con i cani. Questa volta però sono stata lì con un animale più grande — un cavallo!
Half Moon Bay is an eclectic city near the ocean. A lot of people come here to surf. The beach is a dream. It is big and white, the sea is blue and there are enormous cliffs. I like to go there with my dogs. This time, however, I was there with an animal a lot bigger – a horse!
Il nome del mio cavallo era Pensicola. Purtroppo, secondo me, lui era un po’ lento. Mi sarebbe piaciuto avere un cavallo un po’ più vivace e veloce. Però abbiamo fatto amicizia e abbiamo passato due ore piacevoli insieme.
The name of my horse was Pensicola. However, if you ask me, he was a bit slow. I would have preferred to have a horse a little more lively and faster. However, we became friends and we spent two enjoyable hours together.
Ecco alcune parole utile per descrive il mondo ippico! / Here are some useful words to describe the world of horses and their gear.
Prima vorrei farvi conoscere “la briglia.” Questa è la parte che va dentro la bocca del cavallo. Le redini sono attaccato alla briglia. Con le redini si controlla il cavallo. È necessario avere un tocco leggero per non agitare troppo o annoiare il cavallo. Solo quando vuoi comunicare un comando al cavallo devi tirare le redini.
First I want to acquaint you with the word “bridle.” This is the part that goes inside the horse’s mouth. The reins are attached to the bridle. With the reins, you control the horse. It is necessary to keep a light touch so as not to agitate or annoy the horse. Only when you want to communicate a command to the horse do you pull on the reins.
Quando il cavallo fa qualcosa di buono, e risponde subito al tu comando è una buona idea di dagli delle pacche leggere o toccarlo sul collo. Mi raccomando anche di coccolarlo con dolci parole. In questo modo il cavallo avrà più fiducia in voi e risponderà ai comandi futuri più velocemente.
When the horse is responsive and follows your commands it’s a good idea to give it a light pat or touch it on the neck. I suggest also talking to the horse with gentle words. In this way, the horse will learn to trust you and will respond to your future commands without hesitation.
Queste sono le staffe. Si mettono i piedi nelle staffe. Aiuta avere gli stivali con un tacco per tenere i piede sicuramente nelle staffe. Un’altra cosa importante dovete ricordare di tenere i tacchi verso il basso per sistemare il vostro peso correttamente sul cavallo e per controllare il vostro equilibrio sulla sella e per non mettere troppo stress sul sedere. Altrimenti il giorno dopo non sarà piacevole.
These are the stirrups. You place your feet into the stirrups. It helps to have boots with heels to keep your feet in place in the stirrups. Another important thing to remember is to keep your heels pointed down to position your weight correctly on the horse and to keep your balance in the saddle and not put too much stress on your rear. Otherwise the next day it will be sore.
La sella va su il dorso del cavallo e c’è un cuscinetto sotto la sella per proteggere la schiena del cavallo. Per protezione, gli zoccoli dei cavalli sono ferrati.
The saddle goes on the horse’s back and there is padding under the saddle to protect the horse’s back. For protection, the horse’s hooves have iron horseshoes.
Alla scuderia – scuderia – questa è bella parola, no? È una delle mie parole preferita – mi piace il suono. Una scuderia è il posto dove tengono i cavalli. Boh, alla scuderia davanti alle recinzioni dei cavalli ho incontrato il mio cavallo. Abbiamo parlato un po’ per conoscerci meglio e poi l’ho montato. Quando tutto il gruppo e i guidi erano pronti in fila siamo andati verso la spiaggia.
At the stable – scuderia – this is a great word! It is one of my favorites – I like the way it sounds. The scuderia is the place where the horses are kept. At the scuderia in front of the horses’ pens, I was introduced to my horse. We spoke a bit to get to know one another better and then I climbed on top. When the whole group and the guides were ready in a single file line we headed toward the beach.
Abbiamo seguito un percorso che attraversava un campo fino a una piccola gola. C’era tanto fango e un piccolo ruscello ma il cavallo sapeva benissimo come affrontare la situazione e con calma è entrato nell’acqua e l’abbiamo attraversato senza scivolare. Quando siamo arrivati al promontorio sopra la spiaggia, il sentiero è diventato ripido, ma il cavallo di nuovo è riuscito a scendere senza problema.
We followed a path that crossed a field to a small ravine. There was mud and a small stream, but the horse knew just what to do and calmly entered the water and we crossed without slipping. When we arrived at the bluff above the beach, the path became very steep, but again the horse succeeded in descending without any problems.
Vorrei dire che è stato la mia abilità fantastica di gestire il mio cavallo…ma la verità è che lui sapeva benissimo la strada. L’ha percorsa tante volte prima. Sulla spiaggia siamo andati al passo molto vicino alle onde e siamo anche andati al trotto sulla sabbia.
I’d like to say that it was because of my fantastic skills in handling my horse…but the truth is he knew the path very well. He had taken it many times before. On the beach, we walked close to the waves and we also trotted along through the sand.
Avrei voluto andare al galoppo, ma come vi ho spiegato prima, il mio cavallo era contenta di muoversi tranquillamente senza fretta. È stata una bella esperienze andare a cavallo sulla spiaggia, e la prossima volta che andrò a cavallo vorrei andare in un’altra direzione e seguire un percorso interna sulle colline e nel bosco…e sceglierò un cavallo un po’ più vivace!
I would have liked to have galloped, but as I mentioned earlier, my horse was quite content to move slowly without hurry. It was a great experience to go horseback riding on the beach and the next time I go horseback riding I would like to go in a different direction and follow an inland trail into the hills and the forest…and I will choose a livelier horse!
Ora ho un nuovo apprezzamento per quello che i veri cavalieri fanno, tra cui anche i giostratori di Arezzo durante la giostra. È stata solo un piccolo assaggio di quello che loro fanno. Infatti ci vuole un sacco di pratica per gestire un cavallo ed essere così abili da tenere una lancia in mano e colpire il bersaglio con precisione. Loro si allenano per ore e ore, per quasi tutto l’anno.
Now I have a new appreciation for the real horsemen, among them the jousters in Arezzo. I had just a small taste of what they do. In fact, it takes a lot of practice to manage a horse and be able to hold a lance in hand and hit a target with precision. They practice for hours and hours, for practically the entire year.
Dovreste vedere questo spettacolo! È molto affascinante e potete vedere la giostra con me il settembre prossimo. Organizzo un gruppo per studiare l’italiano in Italia e avremo anche l’occasione di guardare la giostra insieme. Avremo anche la possibilità di visitare una scuderia di uno dei quartieri per vedere dove i cavalieri si allenano.
You should see this event! It is wonderful and can see the jousting games with me next September. I’m organizing a group to study Italian in Italy and we will have the chance to see the joust together. We will also have the chance to visit the scuderia – the horse stables – of one of the neighborhoods to see where the jousters practice.
