Marbled paper is one of Florence’s most refined and recognizable artisan crafts. It’s an ancient technique that produces swirling, marble-like patterns on the surface of paper. Each sheet is unique—a miniature masterpiece of creativity and craftsmanship.

Le origini della carta marmorizzata risalgono all’antica Persia e al Giappone, dove veniva chiamata Ebru. Arrivò in Europa nel XVII secolo e trovò la sua patria d’adozione proprio a Firenze, città dell’arte e dell’eleganza. Qui, gli artigiani fiorentini perfezionarono la tecnica e la resero simbolo di stile e bellezza rinascimentale.
The art of marbling originated in ancient Persia and Japan, known as Ebru, and arrived in Europe in the 17th century. Florence—city of art and elegance—adopted and perfected it. Florentine artisans refined the craft, turning it into a symbol of Renaissance taste and timeless beauty.

How Marbled Paper is Made
Il processo è pura poesia visiva! Si inizia riempiendo una vasca con una soluzione gelatinosa, sulla quale si spruzzano i colori che galleggiano e si mescolano creando vortici e fantasie. Con un pettine o uno stilo, l’artigiano disegna delicatamente il motivo desiderato. Infine, si appoggia un foglio di carta sulla superficie, assorbendo il disegno in un istante magico!
The process is pure visual poetry! It begins with a shallow tray filled with a gelatinous solution. Colors are dropped on top, floating and swirling into beautiful patterns. Using a comb or stylus, the artisan gently shapes the design. Then, a sheet of paper is laid on the surface—capturing the image in one magical moment!

L’anno prossimo entreremo in una vera bottega artigiana — il laboratorio di un maestro fiorentino che crea l’elegante carta marmorizzata. E se saremo fortunati… potremmo persino rimboccarci le maniche e realizzare il nostro personale foglio di carta marmorizzata — proprio come fanno i maestri fiorentini da secoli!
In September 2026, during the Matta Italian Language Immersion Program in Florence, you’ll experience the perfect blend of language, art, and tradition in the heart of the Renaissance city. Next year, we’ll step inside a real bottega artigiana — the workshop of a Florentine artisan who creates exquisite carta marmorizzata, or marbled paper. And if we’re lucky… we might even get the chance to roll up our sleeves and craft our very own piece of marbled paper — just as Florentine masters have been doing for centuries!
