Welcome Home to Bologna: Bologna, the largest city in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is known for its vibrant blend of youthful energy and rich historical heritage. Nicknamed La Città Rossa for its red-tiled roofs and red-washed palazzos, the city’s narrow streets and picturesque historic center offer a unique backdrop for exploring its ancient architecture. Home to the University of Bologna—established in 1088 and the oldest in the Western world—Bologna’s educational legacy contributes to its lively atmosphere. With over twenty-five miles of porticoes, the city embodies a deep mercantile spirit and enduring international flair, making a stroll through Bologna a journey through its storied past and dynamic present.
Bologna’s reputation as a culinary hub is well-earned, with its iconic dishes showcasing the region’s rich flavors. Among the highlights are tagliatelle al ragù, traditionally served with a hearty meat sauce and a sprinkle of Parmesan. The city is also famous for tortellini in savory broth and smooth, thinly sliced mortadella. A wide variety of fresh and aged cheeses further exemplify Bologna’s gastronomic excellence.
