Oggi sentiamo mia amica Martina, una ragazza italiana che tra poco termina un dottorato (PhD) in fisica. Martina ed io parliamo spesso della situazione attuale in Italia e in questo post voleva anche condividere con voi le sue opinioni della situazione dei giovani in Italia. Per effettuare un cambiamento, dovremo accorgerci delle belle e delle brutte cose che stanno succedendo in Italia.
Salve a tutti! Noi ci siamo già visti nel post sul Carnevale, io mi chiamo Martina e sono una ragazza italiana amica di Melissa. Vi scrivo per narrarvi gli ultimi sviluppi della mia storia.
Hello everyone! We have already met in a former post about the Italian Carnival, I am Martina, an Italian friend of Melissa. I’m writing you again to tell you the last developments of my story.
Sto terminando un dottorato (PhD) a Roma e ho di recente trovato un lavoro in Scozia! Il mio ragazzo viveva già lì perché sta facendo anche lui un dottorato, quindi avevo deciso che una volta terminato lo avrei raggiunto per cercare un’opportunità lì. Mi è sempre piaciuta molto la Gran Bretagna e la Scozia in particolare è un paese molto bello e accogliente. Certo, fa parecchio freddo e piove (quasi) sempre, e questo per me è abbastanza seccante, però ci si abitua.
I am finishing a Ph.D. in Rome and I have recently found a job in Scotland! My boyfriend has been living there already because he is doing a Ph.D. as well, so I had decided I would have moved there once concluded with my studies and looked for a job. I’ve always like Great Britain, and Scotland, in particular, is very beautiful and also very welcoming. Well, it’s very cold and rainy out there, and this is very annoying to me, but I’ll get used to the weather at some point.
Io sono un fisico e adesso lavorerò come sviluppatore (programmatore) di giochi interattivi a scopo scientifico per gli alunni delle scuole. Sono molto contenta perché mi interessa molto il campo dell’istruzione e della comunicazione della scienza e già ho lavorato a qualche progetto di divulgazione su base volontaria. Inoltre mi piace programmare (anche se non sono un informatico) e così potrò imparare a fare tante cose nuove e diventare più brava. È tutto perfetto!
I am a Physicist and from now on I’ll be working as a Software Developer, building educational scientific games for school students. I am very happy because I really care about education and science communication, I have already been involved, on a voluntary basis, in some science popularization projects. I also love programming (though I’m not a computer scientist) so this opportunity will provide me with improved skills and I’ll learn lots of new things. Everything is perfect!
L’unica cosa triste di questa novità è che nel mio paese purtroppo non ci sono molte opportunità per i giovani che finiscono l’università e vogliono lavorare. L’Italia sta risentendo di una forte crisi economica e la disoccupazione non fa che crescere. Questo è il riflesso di decenni di politiche sbagliate che non hanno prestato interesse alla cultura (eppure il paese ha tantissime risorse culturali!) e all’innovazione. Aprire un’attività imprenditoriale come una start-up innovativa, per esempio, è difficilissimo. D’altra parte, le aziende che esistono non sono molto propense ad assumere giovani appena laureati o dottorati perché le tasse sul lavoro sono elevatissime, quindi preferiscono offrire dei contratti di pochi mesi, senza prospettiva di stabilizzazione.
The only sad thing about this news is that my country does not offer many possibilities to young people who finish their university studies and would like to work. Italy is experiencing a heavy economic crisis and unemployment is rising. This is unfortunately the effect of decades of wrong political choices which did not care at all about culture (and we know the country has plenty of cultural resources!) and innovation. Creating a company like an innovative start-up is, for instance, very difficult. On the other hand, existing companies are not very willing to hire young people who just finished their degree or PhD because the work taxation is very high for them, so they prefer to offer short contracts of a few months with no future perspective.
Questo paese purtroppo ha spesso avuto dei governanti egoisti che hanno pensato solo ai propri interessi (per non dire che alcuni sono e sono stati anche dei veri criminali). Il risultato è che molti ragazzi scappano perché si stufano di aspettare occasioni che non arrivano.
This country has sadly often had selfish politicians who are only worried about their own personal interests (and some of them are or have been authentic criminals). The result is that many young people escape the country because they are tired of waiting for occasions which won’t arrive.
È bello spendere del tempo della propria vita in altri paesi perché si fanno esperienze interessanti, si conosce gente nuova e si viene a contatto con altre culture, imparando tanto. Il problema è che in Italia viene poca gente dall’estero e molti italiani invece vanno via. Si genera una situazione per cui i più dinamici e bravi tendono a cercare una vita all’estero, e questo è un gran peccato perché l’Italia ha speso tanti soldi per farli studiare e poi regala il loro talento a qualche altro paese.
Spending some period of your life abroad is a great thing for everyone, you build interesting experiences, you meet new people and you familiarize with new cultures, learning lots of things. The problem with Italy is that not many people come to live in the country and may Italians fly abroad instead. The situation is such that the most dynamic and skilled people tend to look for a life elsewhere, and this is a pity because Italy spent lots of money to make them study and then gives their talent to someone else.
Beh, io dal canto mio sono curiosa di vedere come evolve la situazione. Magari nei prossimi anni le cose cambieranno radicalmente e l’Italia potrà sperimentare un “Nuovo Rinascimento”, potrà imparare a valorizzare le sue bellezze e la sua storia, che è piena di personaggi notevoli e interessanti. Magari diventerà di nuovo il paese dove è bello andare non solo per ragioni turistiche ma anche per scoprire le nuove idee e le nuove correnti culturali, come è stato per molto tempo.
I, for me, am very curious to see how the situation evolves. Maybe in the following years, things will radically change Italy will be able to live a “New Renaissance”, it will appraise its beauty and its history, which is filled with notable and interesting people. Maybe it will become again the country where it is great to go not only for tourism but also to discover new ideas and new cultural trends, as it was back then.
Io sto a guardare con molto interesse perché amo il mio paese, che sarà sempre il mio paese. Voi state a guardare con me, e magari, se volete, diffondete le notizie sui grandi contrasti tra il bello e il brutto dell’Italia. Magari qualcuno lì se vi sente si sveglia dal torpore e capisce che è ora di cambiare molte cose.
I will watch at history with great interest because I love my country, which will always be my country. I invite you all to watch things with me, and maybe, if you wish, spread the news about the huge differences between the beautiful and the ugly things about Italy. Maybe someone will hear you and will wake up, realizing that it is time to change the current situation.
Grazie Martina per le tue intuizioni. È difficile sentire storie dei giovani che non riescono a trovare lavoro in Italia e che devono scappare in altri paesi per trovare opportunità per guadagnare soldi. È la mia sincera speranza che presto, le risorse possono essere reindirizzati ad incoraggiare i giovani ad investire su i loro talenti, le loro educazioni e le loro menti astuti più vicino a casa, per risolvere i brutti problemi che attualmente affliggono l’Italia e il popolo italiano. L’Italia ha tante ricchezze artistiche, posti interessanti da visitare e ha un grande fascino per gli stranieri. Sarebbe anche un peccato se il paese si deteriorasse al punto tale da perdere un ricco patrimonio culturale a causa del malgoverno. Come te sto guardando con molto interesse come la situazione si sviluppa, perché come te, tifo per l’Italia.
Thank you Martina for your insights. It is difficult to hear stories of young people who can’t find work in Italy and must flee to other countries to have a career and real financial prospects. It is my sincere hope that soon, resources can be redirected to help and encourage young people to invest their talents, education, and bright minds closer to home in order to resolve the ugly problems that currently afflict Italy and the Italian people. Italy also has so much artistic wealth, beauty and holds a great fascination for foreigners. It would be a shame to have it deteriorate to the point that we lose our rich western cultural heritage, due to bad governing and ulterior motives of corrupt politicians. Like you, I will be watching with great interest to see how the situation unfolds, because like you, I am a fan of Italia.

Having family southern Italy, I am familiar with this problem. I sincerely hope in the coming years this situation changes, and these educated and enthusiastic youth can find work they love in their country which they love.
Ciao Stacy! I think it is important that people outside of Italy are made aware of these problems. It isn’t just all tiramasu and torta nel bel paese. There are some real problems that need to be addressed by the Italian government.
