A night to remember – the evening Isabella was awakened in Arezzo!

Lo scorso sabato sera ad Arezzo, la cosa più sorprendente è accaduta proprio nel cuore del centro storico della città. La gente di Arezzo si è presentata per ascoltare una presentazione del mio romanzo appena tradotto — “Il risveglio di Isabella” — ambientato nella loro città nella casa di Ivan Bruschi, oggi un museo.

Last Saturday evening in Arezzo, the most amazing thing happened right in the heart of the city’s historic city center. The people of Arezzo turned out to hear a presentation of my newly translated novel “Il risveglio di Isabella” — that is set in their city in the house of Ivan Bruschi, now a museum.

È stato un evento fantastico, pianificato ed eseguito dai miei amici dell’Associazione Culturale La Staffetta — Laura Ghezzi e Laura Folli. Sono felice di dire che anche io adesso faccio parte di questa collaborazione di artigiani che aiuta a promuovere gli artigiani creativi e le attività artistiche ad Arezzo.

It was a fantastic event, planned and executed by my friends at l’Associazione Culturale La Staffetta — Laura Ghezzi and Laura Folli. I am happy to say that I too, am now a part of this association that helps promote creative artisan and artistic endeavors in Arezzo.

L’evento, che ha avuto luogo — tutto in italiano naturalmente — è iniziato prima con una breve descrizione del romanzo e poi due talentuosi thespian hanno letto passaggi salienti del romanzo che descriveva la mia protagonista — una donna che sembrava indomita, che fu assassinata dal marito nel Ceretto Guidi. Poi sono stati letti paragrafi specifici che descrivono Arezzo, la giostra e il commercio antico specifico di questa affascinante città, dando al pubblico un piccolo assaggio della storia che fonde una linea temporale contemporanea con due del passato – uno ambientato nel 16 ° secolo e uno ambientato durante gli anni della guerra degli anni ’40.

The event, which took place—all in Italian naturally—began first with a brief description of the novel and then two talented thespians read salient passages from the novel that described my heroine Isabella de’ Medici — a woman who seemed indomitable, who was murdered by her husband in Ceretto Guidi. Then specific paragraphs were read that describe Arezzo, the Joust and the antique trade specific to this charming town, giving the audience a little taste of the story that blends a contemporary timeline with two from the past — one set in the 16^th century and one set during the war years of the 1940s.

È stato un momento molto emozionante che gli Aretini abbiano abbracciato me, la mia storia e il mio fascino per la loro città. Mentre le attrici leggevano i brani ad alta voce per un pubblico molto comprensivo, ero quasi portato alle lacrime. A questo punto mi sentiva Aretina!

It was a highly emotional moment to have the Aretini embrace me, my story, and my fascination for their town. As the actresses read passages out loud to a very sympathetic audience, I was nearly brought to tears. At that moment I felt myself a real Aretina.

In seguito, c’è stato un forum di domande e risposte in cui il pubblico mi ha posto delle domande. Quando tutto fu concluso, c’era ho firmato libri nell’atrio del museo mentre sulla terrazza del palazzo con vista mozzafiato della città e la Pieve — la chiesa più antica di Arezzo —gli ospiti venivano invitati a prendere parte a un aperitivo; bere prosecco e chiacchiere mentre la luce del sole al tramonto illuminava le antiche degli edifici che fiancheggiano Piazza Grande.

Following this, there was a question and answer forum in which the audience asked me questions. When all was concluded, there was a book signing in the lobby of the museum while on the terrazza of the palazzo overlooking the city and la Pieve the oldest church in Arezzo guests were invited to partake in an aperativo; drink prosecco and chat as the light of the setting sun set a glow the ancient stones of the buildings lining Piazza Grande.

Arezzo, proprio come la mia protagonista Isabella, sta solo aspettando di essere svegliata. È pieno di tutti i tipi di tesori e bellezza. Arezzo è una gemma unica e sono felice di risvegliarla al mondo!

Arezzo, much like my protagonist Isabella, is just waiting to be awakened. It is filled with all kinds of treasures and beauty. I encourage you all to visit the city, walk the streets, and soak up its history. Nowhere else do they celebrate with such passion la Giostra del Saracino — the jousting ceremony with such ardor. Arezzo is a one-of-a-kind gem, and I am happy to awaken it to the world!
