A San Pietro e lungo Via della Conciliazione, più di 250.000 fedeli si sono riuniti in un silenzioso abbraccio collettivo per i funerali del papa argentino.

Dopo il funerale, i cardinali si riuniscono in conclave nella Cappella Sistina. Il processo può durare giorni… o settimane! Ogni cardinale vota segretamente finché non si raggiunge una maggioranza di due terzi. Il famoso fumus albus (fumo bianco) annuncia l’elezione del nuovo papa!

Lo sapevi che la parola conclave viene dal latino cum clave, che significa “chiusi a chiave”? I cardinali venivano letteralmente rinchiusi in una stanza finché non eleggevano un nuovo papa, per evitare pressioni esterne e garantire la segretezza assoluta. Niente distrazioni… o quasi!

Ma quando la decisione tardava ad arrivare, si cominciò a ridurre le portate per mettere un po’ di… fretta spirituale. Alla fine, Giovanni fu eletto papa con il nome di Leone X.
