1000 Mille Lire: Che potete fare con 1000 Lire? How much is it worth?

L’altro giorno ho deciso di pulire il mio armadio. Non so esattamente il perché, ma mi sembrava il momento giusto per sbarazzarmi di oggetti che non mi servivano più o che erano fuori moda. Forse stavo solo evitando di disegnare un logo per un cliente e volevo marinare il lavoro! Ad ogni modo, era ora di riordinare le cose!

The other day I decided to clean out my closet. I’m not exactly sure why, but it seemed an appropriate time to get rid of items that no longer served a purpose or were clearly outdated. Maybe I was avoiding working on a design job for a client and wanted to play hooky from work! At any rate, it was definitely time to attack the closet.

Prima di iniziare, ho bevuto un espresso forte e poi con un po’ di cautela, ho aperto la porta dell’armadio strapieno di vestiti. Ho iniziato a tirare fuori gonne, camicie e vestiti. Poi ho provato alcuni vestiti davanti allo specchio. Ho esaminato ogni capo d’abbigliamento intensamente, come una ragazza che gioca a travestirsi. Poi ho buttato alcuni vestiti in un ammasso da salvare e altri in un cumulo per la beneficenza.

Before I began, I took drank a strong espresso and then cautiously opened the door to my overstuffed closet. I started pulling out skirts, shirts, and dresses. Then I tried some clothes on in front of the mirror. I felt like a girl playing dress-up. Then I threw some clothes in the pile to “save” and others in the pile for the Goodwill Box.

Nascosto sul fondo dell’armadio ho visto alcune scatole, che avevo completamente dimenticato. Archiviate all’interno, come una capsula del tempo, ho scoperto un mucchio di vecchie borse. Era chiaro che la scadenza della moda era stata superata! Prima di aggiungere le borse al mucchio per la beneficenza, ho controllato le tasche per altri tesori nascosti dentro. Frugando all’interno della prima borsa ho trovato un rosetto rosso brillante, un fermaglio per i capelli e con grande sorpresa…1000 lire!

Hidden in the very back of the closet I found several boxes, I had completely forgotten about. Archived inside, like a time capsule, I discovered a bunch of old purses. Clearly, the fashion dates had expired on each of the bags! Before tossing the purses onto the giveaway pile, however, I checked their inner pockets for any additional hidden treasures. As I rummaged around inside the first purse I found a tube of bright red lipstick, a hair clip, and much to my surprise…a 1000 lire note!

La reazione iniziale è stata euforia e felicità. Ho fatto un salto di gioia! Pensavo di aver trovato una piccola fortuna nascosta dentro la mia vecchia borsa. Ma dopo essermi calmata, e dopo aver fatto una rapida ricerca su Google, mi sono resa conto che il biglietto, mi sono resa conto che se avessi potuto cambiare il biglietto in dollari, sarebbe stato valutato a cinquantina centesimi. La lira italiana è stata l’unità ufficiale di moneta in Italia fino al 1 gennaio 1999, quando è stato sostituito dall’euro. Il termine “lira” viene dal latino per indicare il valore di una libbra di argento puro.

My initial reaction was elation and giddiness. I did a little happy dance. I thought I had found a small fortune tucked away inside my old purse. But, after I calmed down and did a quick google search, I realized the lire note if it actually could be exchanged into a dollar amount would be worth all of about fifty cents. The Italian lira was the official unit of currency in Italy until January 1, 1999, when it was replaced by the euro. The term lira originate from the value of a pound weight of high purity silver.

Che potete fare con 1000 lire oggi? Alla fine del giorno nel 2015…non molto! Boh! Terrò il biglietto come un portafortuna e come una promemoria che è meglio spendere i soldi stranieri prima di tornare a casa. Altrimenti si trovano soldi inutili dentro una vecchia borsa tanti anni dopo.Con questo in mente…il mese prossimo, prima di tornare a casa dall’Italia, penso che comprerò una nuova borsa italiana!

What can you do with 1000 lire note these days? At the end of the day in 2015…not much! Well… I will keep it as a good luck charm and a reminder to spend my foreign currency before I return home. Otherwise one finds useless money at the bottom of an old purse years later. With that in mind…next month before I return home from Italy, I think I will buy myself a new Italian purse!
