Questo autunno, a partire da ottobre, leggeremo un romanzo di Felicia Kingsley (un’autrice italiana di successo di Modena, non lasciateti ingannare dal suo cognome!)
This fall, starting in October, we will be reading a novel by Felicia Kingsley (a bestselling Italian author from Modena, don’t let her last name fool you!)

Ho appena finito di leggere e ascoltare il libro sulla spiaggia di Castiglione della Pescaia, e ho deciso che sarebbe stata la lettura perfetta per il nostro prossimo Matta Book Club. I lettori della scorsa primavera del Matta Book Club si sono divertiti così tanto leggendo la “Guida astrologica per cuori infranti” di Silvia Zucca e poi parlando con l’autore durante il nostro incontro; credo che sia un’esperienza preziosa che vale la pena di ripetere!
I just finished reading and listening to the book on the beach in Castiglione della Pescaia, and I decided it would be the perfect read for our next Matta Book Club. The readers of last spring’s Matta Book Club had so much fun reading Silvia Zucca’s “Guida astrologica per Cuori Infranti” and then speaking with the author during our final meeting; I believe it is a valuable experience well worth the challenge and worthy of repeating!
Il romanzo di Silvia è stato un po’ impegnativo, e penso che la prossima lettura di Felicia Kingsley sarà più facile da seguire. “Prima regola: non innamorarsi” è un mistero che ha azione, romanticismo, e una trama che ci porta dal sud della Francia, Inghilterra, a Venezia sull’Orient Express come due ladri (che non amano l’un l’altro (almeno all’inizia), pensano Cary Grant e Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief) fare squadra per trovare il diario perduto di Casanova a Venezia.
Silvia’s novel was a bit challenging, and I think this next read by Felicia Kingsley will be easier to follow. “Prima regola: non innamorarsi” is a mystery that has action, romance, and a plot that takes us from the south of France, England, to Venice on the Orient Express as two thieves (who dislike one another (at least at first), think Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief) team up to find Casanova’s lost diary in Venice.

La Trama / The Plot
“Prima regola: non innamorarsi”
Two highly specialized thieves, Nick and Silvye, who have double-crossed one another in the past and already despise one another, are hired by Lord Henry to find Casanova’s famed “lost” diary. Begrudgingly the duo joins forces to solve the case. Sparks fly as they attempt to work together, and their witty banter is reminiscent of other wise-cracking couples such as Grace Kelly and Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “To Catch a Thief” or Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou in “The Da Vinci Code.” The plot thickens as Nick and Silvye board the Orient Express in Paris, bound for Venice, where a private auction takes place to acquire rare drawings that hold clues to the diary’s hidden location. A dead body, a bejeweled necklace, poisoned lipstick, shady characters, lots of plot twists, a little romance, and a lot of Italy… this all makes for a fun and light-hearted read, ironic and humorous. The adventure story that pits two thieves against one another will entertain you. Still, you will also learn about Renaissance and 18th-century art, Venice, Casanova, and lots of fun historical trivia, as well as about the secret society of the freemasons, in addition to improving your Italian reading and auditory comprehension skills.

A malincuore il duo unisce le forze per risolvere il caso. Scintille volano mentre tentano di lavorare insieme, e le loro battute arguto ricorda altre coppie spiritose come Grace Kelly e Cary Grant in “Per catturare un ladro” di Alfred Hitchcock o Tom Hanks e Audrey Tautou in “Il codice da Vinci.” La trama si complica mentre Nick e Silvye si imbarcano sull’Orient Express a Parigi, diretti a Venezia, dove si svolge un’asta privata per acquisire rari disegni che contengono indizi sulla posizione nascosta del diario. Un cadavere, una collana di gioielli, rossetto avvelenato, personaggi loschi, tanti colpi di scena, un po’ di romanticismo, e un sacco di Italia… Tutto ciò rende la lettura divertente e spensierata, ironica e divertente. The intrigues, the plot twists, puzzles, and secret codes the protagonists have to solve capture the attention and keep the reader riveted from the first to the last page. Nick Montecristo – (ma nessuna sa il su vero nome) deve essere stato uno gatto in una vita precedente perché, a trentadue anni, ha già vissuto otto volte, guida turistica abusiva, Ricercatore universitario che falsifica le lauree, gestore di una bisca clandestina, detenuto, ricercato, fuggitivo e, oggi, ladro su commissione. È anche conosciuto come il chirurgo.
Nick Montecristo – (but no one knows his real name) must have been a cat in a previous life because, at thirty-two, he has already lived eight times, a swindler tour guide, university researcher who forged diplomas, manager of an illegal gambling den, convict, wanted, fugitive and, today, thief for hire. Also known as il Chirurgo—the surgeon.
The story alternates every other chapter between Nick and Silvye’s viewpoints. Thus, we get inside both characters’ heads and hear both the male and female perspectives as the story unfolds.

The Matta Italian Group Book Club will consist of 2-3 people and will meet once a week for
1-1/2 hours for eight sessions to discuss the Italian novel selected for the 8-week seminar.
Once the groups have been established, times and days will be determined based on the group’s preferences. The Matta Italian Book Club meetings will be held on Zoom.
(The Group Book Club allows members to meet other language learners and participate in group conversations).
