Matta Italian Language Tip!

🌳 Have you ever climbed a tree and never come back down?

In Il Barone Rampante, one of Italy’s most beloved novels, Italo Calvino introduces us to Cosimo Piovasco di Rondò, a young nobleman who rebels against his family, climbs into the trees, and decides to spend the rest of his life among the branches.

Along the way, he has adventures, falls in love, observes society from above, and is accompanied by his loyal dog with perhaps the greatest name ever

Ottimo Massimo!

I enjoyed this book for its sense of fantasy, whimsy, and the unexpected twists of the plot. Calvino creates a world that floats effortlessly between reality and pure imagination. One moment you’re reading about an eccentric young aristocrat living in the trees, and the next you’re reflecting on freedom, independence, and what it means to live life on your own terms.

Matta Italian Word of the Day: RAMO
A branch (of a tree)

Cosimo saltava da un ramo all’altro senza mai toccare terra.

Cosimo jumped from one branch to another without ever touching the ground.

One of the reasons I love teaching Italian through stories is that language sticks better when it’s attached to memorable characters, funny situations, and imaginative adventures.

In fact, I often take my cue from Calvino when creating my own lessons. I love inventing whimsical storylines, quirky characters, and unexpected scenarios that help students practice Italian in a way that feels more like play than study.

So come climb a tree with Cosimo and Ottimo Massimo and discover one of the most magical novels in Italian literature!

Matta Italian Language Tip!

In a new blog post on the StudentessaMatta.com Italian Language Learning website check out the lastest post the “Fiera Antiquaria” in Arezzo

A very Italian idiom for shopping, treasure-hunting, and falling in love with beautiful things:

“Mi è saltato all’occhio!”

In my newest post on StudentessaMatta.com, I’m taking you to the Fiera Antiquaria in Arezzo, with lots of fun photos from the fair, vintage finds, curious objects, and useful Italian expressions.

“Mi è saltato all’occhio” is a very common Italian expression.

Literally, it means “it jumped into my eye,” but the real meaning is:

“It caught my eye.”

We use it when something suddenly stands out and immediately grabs our attention.

Quel vestito mi è saltato all’occhio appena sono entrata nel negozio.

That dress caught my eye the moment I walked into the shop.

And yes... those fabulous gold Prada platform sandals pictured above definitely mi sono saltate all’occhio. They caught my eye immediately, and I kind of really wanted them! LOL

You can use this expression for much more than clothes. A painting, a beautiful building, a vintage Vespa, a colorful market stall, or even a handsome stranger can saltare all’occhio!

It’s the perfect phrase for that moment when you spot something so irresistible you instantly think:

“Deve venire a casa con me!”
“That has to come home with me!”

Loud. Crazy. Noisy. Wonderful.

Children running between tables, nonni on the dance floor, conversations flying in every direction, and everyone happily eating, laughing, singing, and dancing.

This is Italy at its best: chaotic, generous, joyful, and completely unforgettable. ❤️

A powerful day at Rondine Cittadella della Pace. 🕊 A powerful day at Rondine Cittadella della Pace. 🕊️

Today I had the privilege of listening to Angela Terzani Staude, writer, traveler, and the wife of the late journalist and author Tiziano Terzani.

With grace, wisdom, and a lifetime of experience behind her words, she spoke about dialogue, understanding, and the importance of remaining curious about people whose lives, cultures, and beliefs differ from our own.

One thought that stayed with me was the idea that peace is not something abstract or reserved for governments and politicians. It begins in our daily lives, in our willingness to listen, to question our assumptions, and to recognize the humanity in others.

In a world that often encourages division and certainty, Angela reminded us of the value of humility, empathy, and genuine human connection.

As someone who loves languages, travel, and cultural exchange, I left inspired by the belief that every conversation has the potential to build a bridge.

Thank you, Rondine, for creating a space where dialogue is still considered a powerful act of hope. ❤️
