Have you heard of the Italian band called
the Pinguini Tattici Nucleari (Tactical Nuclear Penguins)?
Per quanto io ascolti musica italiana su Spotify, mi sorprende che non abbia sentito parlare del gruppo prima di giugno.
As much as I listen to Italian music on Spotify, I‘m surprised I hadn’t of the group before this past June.
Gli amici mi avevano informato del gruppo ad Arezzo. Una sera, la figlia di un’amica non poteva essere con noi a cena perché era a Firenze per un concerto dei Nuclear Tactical Penguins.
I was introduced to the singing group while I was living in Arezzo. One evening, a friend’s daughter couldn’t be with us for dinner because she was in Firenze at a Pinguini Tattici Nucleari concert.
“Cosa?” esclamai. “Che razza di nome è?!?!?”
“What?” I exclaimed. “What kind of name is that!?!?”
Pensavo che il mio amico scherzasse e non me la sono bevuta, tanto per cominciare! Mi ha spiegato che, in effetti, era il nome della band. Il gruppo ha recentemente rivelato che il nome si ispira a una birra scozzese prodotta da una birreria britannica chiamata BrewDog, chiamata Tactical Nuclear Penguin.
I thought my friend was joking and I didn’t buy it at first! She explained that, indeed, it was the band’s name. The group had revealed recently that the name was inspired by a Scottish beer produced by a British Brewery called BrewDog, called Tactical Nuclear Penguin.
“Devo assolutamente ascoltare una delle loro canzoni!” Le ho detto. Rapidamente ha fatto partire una playlist e abbiamo iniziato ad ascoltare la canzone “Giovani wannabe.” In base al nome del gruppo, mi aspettavo di essere bombardato dagli accordi stridenti di una band heavy metal rock.
“I have got to hear one of their songs!” I said to her. Quickly she cued up a playlist, and we began listening to the song “Giovani wannabe.” Based on the name of the group, I half expected to be bombarded by strident chords played by a heavy metal rock band.
Sono rimasta molto sorpresa nel sentire i suoni pulsanti, vibranti, melodici e ottimisti del pop italiano.
I was extremely surprised to hear instead, the pulsating, vibrant melodic, upbeat sounds of Italian pop music.
“Chi sono questi ragazzi?” chiesi mentre tutti iniziavamo a ballare la loro musica. “Sono davvero in gamba!”
“Who are these guys?” I asked as we all started to dance to their music. “They are great!”

Il giorno dopo, ho cercato i Pinguini Tattici Nucleari su Spotify e Youtube. Andando su Google per informarmi meglio ho scoperto è un gruppo indie italiano di Bergamo formatosi nel 2010, i cui componenti sono Riccardo Zanotti, Nicola Buttafuoco, Lorenzo Pasini, Simone Pagani, Matteo Locati ed Elio Biffi. Il gruppo è diventato famoso dopo aver partecipato al Festival di Sanremo 2020 con il loro brano “Ringo Star.
The next day, I searched for the Nuclear Tactical Penguins on Spotify and Youtube. Going to Google to find out more, I discovered it is an Italian indie group from Bergamo formed in 2010, whose members are Riccardo Zanotti, Nicola Buttafuoco, Lorenzo Pasini, Simone Pagani, Matteo Locati, and Elio Biffi. The group became famous after participating in the Sanremo Festival 2020 with their song “Ringo Star.

Da allora, in Italia, il gruppo è esploso in popolarità. Apprezzano il Festival di Sanremo e la notorietà che ha portato loro. I membri della band commentano: «Siamo estremamente grati al Festival. Pur avendo una carriera che andava a gonfie vele, prima di Sanremo non eravamo mai riusciti ad approdare nel territorio dei palazzetti, di fronte a otto o diecimila spettatori, un universo completamente diverso.»
Since then, in Italy, the group has exploded in popularity. The band members are appreciative of the Sanremo Festival and the notoriety that it has brought them. They comment: «We are extremely grateful to the Festival. Despite having success, before Sanremo we had never been able to land large concert venues, in front of eight or ten thousand spectators, a completely different universe».
