Eccomi di nuovo ad Arezzo, nel cuore pulsante della Toscana, con il mio gruppo di studenti di italiano. Abbiamo appena vissuto un weekend matto e memorabile, tutto dedicato alla Giostra del Saracino – una tradizione secolare che anima la città con energia, passione e colori vivaci.
Here I am again in Arezzo, the beating heart of Tuscany, with my Italian language group. We’ve just come off a whirlwind, unforgettable weekend devoted to the Giostra del Saracino — a centuries-old tradition that lights up the city with energy, passion, and vibrant colors.
Una Tradizione Antica che Vive Ancora
An Ancient Tradition That Still Lives On
Se seguite il blog Matta da un po’, saprete già che sono una fan sfegatata di questa manifestazione storica! La prima volta che ho assistito alla Giostra, mi sono innamorata perdutamente dei rioni cittadini — Porta del Foro, Porta Crucifera, Sant’Andrea e Porta Santo Spirito — e dello spirito comunitario degli aretini.
If you’ve been following the Matta blog for a while, you’ll know I’m a die-hard fan of this historical event! The first time I witnessed the joust, I fell head over heels in love with the city’s neighborhoods — Porta del Foro, Porta Crucifera, Sant’Andrea, and Porta Santo Spirito — and the community spirit of the Aretini.
Cavalieri, Saraceni e la Lancia d’Oro
Knights, Saracens, and the Golden Lance
La Giostra non è una battaglia tra cavalieri… almeno non nel senso tradizionale. Nacque nel Medioevo come modo per addestrare i soldati a difendere Arezzo dalle invasioni saracene — una minaccia reale, persino ai tempi di Dante. Oggi è diventata una competizione festosa, ma le sue radici sono ancora ben piantate nella storia e nello spirito della città.
The Joust isn’t a battle between knights… at least not in the traditional sense. It began in the Middle Ages as a way to train soldiers to defend Arezzo from Saracen invasion — a real threat, even in Dante’s day. Though now a festive competition, the Giostra remains deeply rooted in the city’s history and spirit.
I cavalieri moderni forse non indossano armature, ma incarnano la stessa abilità, il coraggio e la lealtà. Non è una semplice rappresentazione teatrale — i nostri cavalieri si allenano tutto l’anno per rappresentare con onore il proprio quartiere in questo evento fieramente aretino. L’obiettivo? Galoppare a tutta velocità lungo la lizza e colpire il buratto rotante esattamente al centro — un bersaglio grande quanto una moneta d’argento. Precisione, velocità e nervi saldi sono fondamentali. Il premio? La lancia d’oro — simbolo di gloria, portato in trionfo per le strade della città.
Today’s cavalieri may not wear armor, but they embody the same skill, courage, and loyalty. This isn’t a theatrical show — our modern knights train year-round to represent their quartiere in this proudly Aretine event. The goal? To gallop full-speed down the lizza and strike the spinning buratto dead center — a bullseye no bigger than a silver dollar. Precision, speed, and nerves of steel are essential. The prize? La lancia d’oro — the golden lance — a symbol of glory, carried home through the streets in triumph.

Nei giorni che precedono la Giostra, Piazza Grande si trasforma: appaiono tribune, la sabbia copre i sanpietrini, e i cavalieri si allenano sul campo della “lizza” — la pista di corsa. I cavalli scalpitano, il bersaglio ruota, e il “Buratto” minaccia con la sua frusta
In the days leading up to the Joust, Piazza Grande transforms: bleachers appear, sand covers the cobblestones, and the knights train on the “lizza” — the race track. The horses prance, the target spins, and the “Buratto” threatens with his whip!
La sera prima della Giostra ogni rione celebra nei propri spazi all’aperto.” C’è musica, brindisi, canti e balli. Vengono serviti piatti abbondanti — antipasti, lasagne, bistecca alla griglia… e fiumi di vino!
On the eve of the Joust, each neighborhood throws a lively open-air banquet in the heart of their quartiere.” There’s music, toasts, singing, and dancing. Heaping plates of food are served — antipasti, lasagna, grilled steak… and rivers of wine!
Il Giorno della Giostra: Che lo Spettacolo Inizi!
Joust Day: Let the Spectacle Begin!
La mattina seguente, l’Araldo — il banditore della città — cavalca per le strade proclamando: “Popolo di Arezzo! La Giostra è arrivata!” La sua voce potente segna l’inizio dei festeggiamenti e invita tutti a partecipare. Poco dopo, vivaci parate di figuranti in costume si snodano per la città, accompagnate da tamburini e sbandieratori che lanciano le loro bandiere in alto nel cielo. Gli spari del cannone risuonano tra le vie, scandendo ogni momento dello spettacolo, mentre l’attesa cresce e la folla si raduna in Piazza Grande per il grande evento.
The next morning, the Araldo — the town herald — rides through the streets calling out: “Popolo di Arezzo! La Giostra è arrivata!” His booming voice signals the start of the festivities, inviting all to join. Soon after, vibrant parades of costumed figuranti wind through the city, accompanied by rhythmic drummers and sbandieratori who launch their flags high into the air. Cannon blasts echo through the streets, marking each moment of the unfolding spectacle, as anticipation builds and the crowd gathers in Piazza Grande for the main event.

This June Porta Santo Spirito Wins the Golden Lance!
Dopo quattro sfide da batticuore, la nostra amata Porta Santo Spirito — con orgoglio in blu e giallo — è emersa vittoriosa! Dai nostri posti in Tribuna A, circondati da una marea di tifosi esultanti, abbiamo assistito al colpo decisivo che ha sancito la vittoria e fatto esplodere la piazza in un tripudio di gioia. Le bandiere sventolavano, i tamburi rullavano e l’energia in Piazza Grande era assolutamente elettrica.
After four heart-throbbing rounds, our beloved Porta Santo Spirito — proudly donning blue and yellow — emerged victorious! From our seats in Tribuna A, surrounded by a sea of cheering fans, we witnessed the decisive strike that sealed the win and sent the crowd into a frenzy of joy. Flags waved, drums thundered, and the energy in Piazza Grande was absolutely electric.
La Festa Continua Nella Notte Aretina
The Party Continues into the Aretine Night
Anche a mezzanotte la festa non si fermava. Dalla mia finestra ho visto sfilare i vincitori con tamburi, bandiere, cavalli e cori. Hanno riportato a casa la lancia d’oro con fierezza, in una processione carica di emozioni.
Even at midnight the party didn’t stop. From my window, I watched the victors parade down Via del Corso with drums, flags, horses, and cheering voices. They proudly carried home the golden lance in an emotional procession.

An Experience to Repeat!
Ogni volta che partecipo alla Giostra, mi sento parte di qualcosa di più grande — una storia viva che unisce passato e presente. È un evento che consiglio a tutti gli amanti della lingua e cultura italiana.
Every time I experience the Joust, I feel part of something bigger — a living history that connects past and present. It’s an event I recommend to all lovers of the Italian language and culture.
