A sweet country evening… interrupted by a horsefly!
L’ultima sera del programma Matta ad Arezzo 2025, ci siamo ritrovati in campagna per una lezione di cucina davvero speciale. Stavamo preparando pasta fatta a mano, sughi deliziosi e dolci artigianali. Il tramonto era dorato, le risate sincere, e i calici di prosecco tintinnavano in aria pieni di allegria.
On the final night of the 2025 Matta Arezzo program, we found ourselves in the countryside for a truly special cooking class. We were making handmade pasta, delicious sauces, and traditional desserts. The sunset was golden, laughter was genuine, and glasses of prosecco clinked in celebration.
Una mosca? No! Un tafano!
A fly? Nope! A horsefly!
Mentre stendevamo la pasta sulla spianatoia, è arrivato un ospite inaspettato! “È una mosca!” ha gridato qualcuno. Ma subito un altro ha esclamato: “È troppo grossa per essere una semplice mosca!” Senza perdere un colpo, la nostra chef Sara ha detto: “Quello, amici miei, è un tafano!”
While we were rolling out the pasta dough, an unexpected guest buzzed in! “It’s a fly!” someone shouted. But another quickly replied, “It’s way too big to be just a fly!” Without missing a beat, our chef Sara said, “That, my friends, is a tafano!”

From tafano to tanfo: Let’s play with the letter T!
“Tafano” era proprio una parola nuova per me. “Che bello!” ho esclamato. Dopo averla ben metabolizzata, con le mani nella pasta, è nato spontaneamente un gioco di parole. Ispirati proprio da quel tafano invadente, gli studenti hanno cominciato a chiamare ad alta voce tutte le parole italiane con la T che suonavano simili. Una parola tirava l’altra, e in un attimo avevamo una lista bellissima—troppo divertente (e decisamente utile!) per essere dimenticata!
“Tafano” was truly a new word for me. “How wonderful!” I exclaimed. After fully processing it, with our hands in the pasta (literally)*, a spontaneous word game was born. Inspired by that pesky horsefly, the students began calling out all the Italian words starting with T that sounded similar. One word led to another, and in no time we had a fantastic list—too fun (and definitely useful!) to forget!
Ecco una manciata di parole italiane che abbiamo trovato, tutte con la lettera T, che suonano simili ma hanno significati completamente diversi! Per esempio: tanfo (puzza) e tonfo (rumore sordo). Oppure toppa (pezza) e tappa (fermata). Quando le pronunci o le scrivi, fai attenzione: cambia una lettera, e cambia tutto!
Here is a handful of Italian words we came up with that start with the letter T that sound alike but have totally different meanings! For example: tanfo (bad smell) vs. tonfo (thud). Or toppa (patch) vs. tappa (stop). When speaking or writing, be careful—change one letter, and you change everything!
* Avere le mani nella pasta is an Italian idiom that describes someone who is involved in lotws of things, something similar to the English idiom ” to have a finger in the pie.”

Questi momenti spontanei sono ciò che rende i programmi Matta indimenticabili. Un semplice tafano ci ha portato a scoprire nuove parole, rafforzare la nostra pronuncia, e ridere tutti insieme. È così che si impara l’italiano con gioia!
These spontaneous moments are what make the Matta Italian Language programs unforgettable. A simple horsefly led us to new vocabulary, reinforced our pronunciation, and had us laughing together. That’s how you learn Italian with joy!

Il tafano se n’è volato via, ma le risate e le nuove parole sono rimaste. Ecco cosa significa studiare l’italiano alla Matta maniera—imparare, ridere, vivere l’italiano, una parola (e una tappa!) alla volta.
The horsefly may have buzzed off, but the laughter and new vocabulary stayed behind. That’s what it means to study Italian the Matta way—learning, laughing, and living the language, one word (and one stop!) at a time.

Matta Italian Language Tip!
When words sound alike, they can be tricky to remember. But with a little imagination, you can create a phrase or mental image to help! Here are a few examples:
Tafano = TA-FA-NO! → Picture yourself yelling “NO!” while swatting away a nasty horsefly.
Tanfo = TANFO = TOILET! → Connect tanfo to the awful smell of a public bathroom.
Tonfo = TONFO = THUD! → Imagine a heavy object falling with a loud TONFO.
Tappo = TAPpo like a TAP! → Think of the tappo as a little cap that seals the wine bottle.
Topolino = Tiny topo! → If topo is a rat, then topolino is its tiny, cuter cousin (like Mickey Mouse!).
