La Traviata, Three Friends, and an Opera Box with a Slightly Limited View!
Milano si illumina, il sipario si alza!
Milan Lights Up, and the Curtain Rises!
Some evenings in Italy feel as though they’ve been lifted straight from a movie. In September, during my stay in Milan, I experienced one of those magical nights: an evening at the legendary Teatro alla Scala to see Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata!
What fun it was to dress up for a night at the opera! From my apartment in the Brera neighborhood, just a short walk from Milan’s iconic Duomo, La Scala was an easy stroll away. And miracle of miracles, I actually managed to make it all the way there in high heels without stumbling! We joined the crowds of elegantly dressed opera-goers as Milan’s lights twinkled and anticipation filled the air. What a magical atmosphere, and what a thrill!

Three Friends, One Road Trip, and a Night at the Opera
Quella sera ero in splendida compagnia!
That evening, I was in wonderful company! Joining me were my friend Kara, a pianist from San Francisco with a passion for music and Italy, and Renata, one of my Italian homestay teachers. I wanted to treat Renata to this special evening as a thank-you for her friendship and our wonderful collaboration in providing Italian language homestay experiences.
Kara, meanwhile, is practically a Matta adventure veteran! She has participated in four of my Italian language immersion programs: twice in Arezzo, once in Florence, and once in Montepulciano.
This fall, we reunited for a girls’ road trip through Northern Italy, with stops in Bergamo, Lecco on Lake Como, Milan, and Piedmont. Our mission? To visit some of my Italian homestay teachers, explore new places, and, naturally, speak as much Italian as possible!
And what better way to celebrate our Milan stop than with an evening at La Scala?

La Scala: An Opera House That Made History
Teatro alla Scala is no ordinary theater. Inaugurated on August 3, 1778, with Antonio Salieri’s opera L’Europa riconosciuta, it was built on the site of the former church of Santa Maria alla Scala, from which it takes its name.
Over the centuries, this magnificent theater has welcomed some of opera’s greatest figures. Giuseppe Verdi premiered works here, including Nabucco in 1842 and Otello in 1887. Giacomo Puccini also made his mark with the premieres of Madama Butterfly and Turandot.
Legendary voices such as Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, and Luciano Pavarotti have performed on its stage, while conductors including Arturo Toscanini and Riccardo Muti helped establish its worldwide reputation.
During World War II, the theater was severely damaged by bombing in 1943, but it was rebuilt and reopened in 1946. Even today, attending a performance at La Scala means stepping into a place where musical history continues to unfold.

La Traviata: Love, Passion, and a Tragic Fate
For our evening, we had chosen La Traviata, one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most beloved operas, first performed in Venice in 1853.
The story follows the impossible love between Violetta Valéry, a young Parisian courtesan, and Alfredo Germont. Amid lavish parties, jealousy, sacrifice, and misunderstandings, their romance collides with the social conventions of the nineteenth century. And naturally, since this is a Verdi opera, keep your tissues handy. A happy ending is far from guaranteed!
Hearing famous melodies such as Libiamo ne’ lieti calici performed live in one of the world’s most celebrated opera houses was an unforgettable experience.

Visione limitata? Ma che significa?!
Restricted View? Wait… What Does That Mean?!
But before settling into our seats, we experienced a little suspense of our own. And it wasn’t part of the opera!
Kara had purchased our tickets online, managing to snag the very last three seats available. What luck! But when we examined the tickets more carefully, we noticed two rather alarming words: “VISIONE LIMITATA.”
Visione limitata?! Ma in che senso?
Restricted view?! What exactly did that mean?
Ci siamo guardate perplesse.
We exchanged puzzled looks. Would we be unable to see the singers? Would we only hear the music? Were we going to be perched somewhere near the ceiling, perhaps behind a gigantic pillar?
After all, we’d bought tickets to see La Traviata, not simply imagine it!
Un palco tutto nostro… quasi!
An Opera Box of Our Own… Almost!
Fortunately, when we entered the theater, we breathed a collective sigh of relief! Our seats were in an elegant first-tier opera box with four chairs: two in front near the railing and two taller chairs behind.
Our box was positioned almost perpendicular to the stage. We had an excellent view of the left side, but the right side… well, that required a little gymnastics!
Whenever the singers moved toward the right, we had to lean out over the railing to follow the action. Fortunately, everyone in our box was wonderfully cooperative. Throughout the performance, we took turns sitting in the front row so everyone could enjoy the best view.
In the end, that famous “restricted view” became part of the fun. And when the music is that extraordinary, a little theatrical acrobatics hardly matters!

Matta Italian Language Tip!

A Little Language Nuance: “Vedere” or “Assistere a”?
In Italian, we can say “Ho visto La Traviata” (I saw La Traviata), but when talking about attending a live performance, Italians often use the expression “assistere a.”
“Abbiamo assistito a uno spettacolo indimenticabile alla Scala!”
We attended an unforgettable performance at La Scala!
Here’s an important detail: when referring to attending or watching an event, the verb “assistere” requires the preposition “a.”
Assistere a un concerto – To attend a concert
Assistere a uno spettacolo – To attend a performance
Assistere a un’opera – To attend an opera
And remember, when it comes to learning Italian, don’t just study the language. Use it, live it, and enjoy the show!
Until our next Matta adventure! The curtain falls… but the journey continues!
