Hello friends
È con il cuore pesante che vi scrivo queste righe. La nostra piccola e adorabile cagnolina Moka se n’è andata. Avrebbe compiuto quattordici anni a dicembre. È stata parte della nostra famiglia così a lungo che la sua assenza ora si sente profondamente. C’è un vuoto nel tessuto delle nostre vite… e insieme a lei, sembra che abbiamo perso un pezzetto di noi stessi.
It is with a heavy heart that I write these words. Our sweet little dog Moka has passed away. She would have turned fourteen in December. She was part of our family for so long that her absence is felt deeply. There is a hole in the fabric of our lives… and with her passing, it feels as though we have lost a small part of ourselves.

Per anni, Moka è stata la mia fedele compagna d’ufficio. Era al mio fianco mentre scrivevo i miei quattro romanzi ambientati in Italia e mi teneva compagnia per quasi ogni post del blog che ho creato—tranne quelli scritti in Italia, naturalmente!
For years, Moka was my faithful office companion. She sat beside me as I wrote all four of my novels set in Italy and kept me company through nearly every blog post I created—except the ones written in Italy, of course!
Anche i miei studenti hanno imparato a conoscere bene Moka: durante le lezioni online, era sempre lì, raggomitolata nel suo lettino proprio dietro di me. Spesso la vedevano sullo sfondo, le facevano un cenno o la salutavano per nome. Alcuni chiedevano di lei ancora prima dei compiti! A modo suo, è diventata parte della lezione!
My students also got to know Moka well: during online lessons, she was always there, curled up in her little bed just behind me. They often spotted her in the background, gave her a wave, or greeted her by name. Some even asked about her before asking about their homework! In her own way, she became part of the lesson!
Come tutto è cominciato
How it all began
Moka era una cagnolina adottata tramite la California Beagle Rescue. Sua madre era stata un cane da laboratorio utilizzato per testare il cibo per cani e, quando la cucciolata di otto piccoli arrivò al rifugio, Moka conquistò subito i nostri cuori.
Moka was a rescue dog I adopted through the California Beagle Rescue organization. Her mother had been a laboratory dog used for testing dog food, and when her litter of eight puppies arrived at the rescue, Moka immediately stole our hearts.
L’ho chiamata come la celebre caffettiera Moka della Bialetti. Come un espresso forte, era piena di energia, e il suo mantello aveva tutte le sfumature calde e cremose di un cappuccino perfetto. Non era solo una cagnolina salvata—in molti modi, è stata lei a salvare noi, riempiendo la nostra casa di gioia e dolcezza.
I named her after the iconic Bialetti moka coffee pot. Like a strong espresso, she was bursting with energy, and her coat carried all the warm, creamy shades of a perfect cappuccino. She wasn’t just a rescue—in many ways, she rescued us, filling our home with joy and sweetness.

Not only was Moka a loyal friend, she was also a little furry muse.
È stata infatti l’ispirazione per il mio ultimo libro per bambini, “Sofia, la piccola matta teaches Italian.” In questa storia, Sofia e la sua cucciola di beagle Moka accompagnano il loro nuovo amico Ty in un’avventura divertente e istruttiva, insegnandogli le basi della grammatica italiana attraverso il racconto, la curiosità e tante spiegazioni semplici e chiare. Le illustrazioni colorate—che ho creato pensando proprio allo spirito vivace di Moka—danno vita ai personaggi, rendendo l’apprendimento un viaggio giocoso e coinvolgente.
She inspired my latest children’s book, “Sofia, la piccola matta teaches Italian.” In the story, Sofia and her beagle puppy Moka guide their new friend Ty through a fun and educational adventure, teaching him the basics of Italian grammar through storytelling, curiosity, and clear, simple explanations. The colorful illustrations—which I created thinking of Moka’s lively spirit—bring the characters to life and turn learning into a playful, engaging journey.
Un addio pieno d’amore
A farewell full of love
Moka, ovunque tu sia adesso, salutami il tuo fratellone Sinbad, che ci ha lasciato cinque anni fa e che ha vissuto quasi diciotto anni. Siete stati cani meravigliosi, anime gentili, e avete reso migliore la nostra famiglia in modi impossibili da esprimere a parole.
Moka, wherever you are now, give a greeting to your big brother Sinbad, who left us five years ago after almost eighteen beautiful years. You were both wonderful dogs—gentle souls who made our family better in ways words could never fully express.
Addio, piccola Moka. Ci vogliamo bene.
Goodbye, my little Moka pot. We love you.
