Un’avventura italiana finisce… giusto in tempo perché ne comincino altre!
One Italian Adventure Ends… Just in Time for New Ones to Begin!
Sette settimane in Italia… e ancora immersa nella lingua!
7 Weeks Immersed in Italy… and Still Knee-Deep in the Italian Language!
After seven unforgettable weeks exploring Tuscany, Piedmont, and Lombardy, reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and speaking Italian from morning until night, I’m back in my studio in the States! I immersed myself in all things Italian, quite literally at times, wading into the waters of Lake Como in Varenna! And what adventures I had along the way!
I attended the opera in Milan, admired masterpieces at the Brera Art Gallery, painted a fresco in Arezzo, and took part in interviews about the Giostra del Saracino with Correr Giostra, which will air soon. I practiced yoga daily among vineyards and poolside, admired spectacular Tuscan sunrises and the majestic mountains of Lake Como. I rode the funicular to Bergamo’s Città Alta and even discovered an ingenious cable ferry inspired by a Leonardo da Vinci design on the Adda River in Imbersago!
E naturalmente, ho mangiato benissimo!
And naturally, I ate extremely well! Tuscan steak, tortelli, agnolotti del plin, a traditional Piedmontese stuffed pasta, homemade baci di dama cookies, and cornetti filled with apricot jam or dark chocolate at Princi in Milan. Between truffle festivals in Monferrato, karaoke nights, live music, and long road trips, there were plenty of Autogrill stops to refuel the car… and ourselves with espresso and focaccia!
But now my suitcase is unpacked, I’m back at my desk, and plenty of exciting new projects are brewing!

Si ricomincia! Torniamo a parlare italiano insieme!
Back to Speaking Italian On-Line: Lessons & Conversation Practice
Even while traveling in Italy, I continued teaching online, although with a lighter schedule. My students enjoyed a little extra Italian atmosphere, with real-time backdrops from balconies, my apartment in Arezzo, and glimpses of everyday Italian life right behind me!
Now that I’m back in Austin, I’m ready to fill my calendar with private online Italian lessons again! I’m looking forward to reconnecting with my students, welcoming new Italian language enthusiasts, and picking up our conversations right where we left off.
Already studying with me, or thinking about getting started? Drop me a note to schedule a lesson! Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced student, there’s always something new for us to learn and discover together.

Traveling Through Northern Italy… Visiting My Matta Homestay Teachers!
After the 2026 Matta Tuscan Villa Program ended, I headed north on a road trip through Lombardy and Piedmont to spend time with several of my Matta Italian Homestay teaching colleagues. I visited Elena in Bergamo, Chiara fromTreviglio, Renata in Milan, Beatrice and Paola in Lecco, and Daniela in Monferrato.
What a pleasure to meet in person and have the opportunity to get to know these teachers better, visit their homes, meet their families, and discover their cities and surrounding areas through their eyes, with the very best personal guides: the teachers themselves! My heartfelt thanks to all of them for their warm welcome and generous hospitality.
I’m delighted to continue promoting their Matta Homestay programs, along with those offered by my other teachers throughout Italy, giving students the opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic Italian life, practice the language, and experience the culture through everyday moments shared with locals.

Books, Encounters & Friendships… The Magic of the Matta Book Club!

Silvia è stata calorosa e accogliente come sempre.
During my stay in Milan, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Silvia Zucca, author of Guida astrologica per cuori infranti, the novel that inspired my very first Matta Italian Book Club! We met for an aperitivo just around the corner from the Duomo and caught up on everything that had happened since we last met in Milan three years ago. Silvia was as warm and welcoming as ever. For me, it’s truly special to have connected personally with one of my favorite authors and now be able to call her a friend!
And speaking of books, the 2026 Matta Fall Italian Book Club is back! This autumn, we’ll read Miss Bee e il cadavere in biblioteca by Alessia Gazzola, a mystery set in 1920s England. Our heroine, Beatrice Bernabò, is a curious, independent young Italian woman and definitely a tough cookie, caught up in a mystery full of intrigue and surprises!

During our online meetings, we’ll discuss the story and characters while expanding our vocabulary and improving our conversational Italian. And who knows… perhaps we’ll even manage to invite Alessia Gazzola to join us for our final Zoom Book Club meeting! Never say never!
Si comincia la prima settimana di novembre!
We begin the first week of November!

🇮🇹 Un consiglio dalla Matta 🇮🇹
Matta Italian Language Tip!

Rimettersi in pista!
Back in the Saddle… Italian Style!
Rimettersi in pista is a colloquial Italian expression meaning to get back into action after a break, find your rhythm again, and get back on track.
“After a month in Italy, it’s time to get back into the swing of things with online lessons and my new projects!”
It means to pick up a conversation or activity right where you left off.
“After the holidays, let’s pick up where we left off and keep speaking Italian!”
