With just 15 minutes a day (or more, if you can!), you can transform your surroundings—wherever you are—into your own little corner of Italy.

At this point you’re probably thinking… Sure, Melissa, that all sounds great—but it also sounds like a lot of work. And maybe you’re wondering: How on earth am I supposed to practice Italian if I don’t live in Italy and have no one to chat with?

Even writing something simple like “Che bello!”, “I agree!”, or “I can’t wait to try this!” keeps your Italian active every single day.

Turn Downtime into Language-Learning Time: Remember to keep an ongoing list of new vocabulary and interesting grammar constructions on your phone or tablet. Throughout the day—while you’re standing in line at the cash register or waiting on hold with tech support—you can pull it up and review a few verbs or expressions. It’s the perfect way to make use of those small pockets of downtime and turn them into mini study sessions.

Fare due chiacchiere! Dopo il film, porta il tuo cane a fare una passeggiata serale e chiacchiera con lui in italiano. Anche se non sei in Italia, puoi sempre trovare qualcuno con cui parlare! Descrivi ciò che vedi mentre cammini con il tuo cucciolo e annota tutto quello che ancora non sai esprimere — proprio lì troverai gli indizi su ciò che devi imparare. After all, if you can’t talk to your dog in Italian, how will you talk to a true Italian?

Prima di andare a letto: leggi qualche pagina di un libro in italiano, annota in italiano la lista delle cose da fare per il giorno dopo oppure scrivi la lista della spesa. Puoi anche dedicare un minuto al tuo diario, segnando ciò che hai fatto oggi e ciò che farai domani. Non serve scrivere un romanzo: bastano poche frasi semplici ogni sera per esercitare i tempi verbali, passato e presente, e rafforzare il nuovo vocabolario.
Before bed: read a few pages of an Italian book, jot down your to-do list for the next day in Italian, or write your grocery list. You can even spend a minute in your journal noting what you did today and what you’ll do tomorrow. You don’t need to write a novel—just a few simple sentences each night help you practice verb tenses, past and present, and reinforce new vocabulary.
